In the star trek movie wrath of khan after the no win scenario test you see a janitor in the background working. I thought that future would have a robot or layers that disintegrate spills or stains from the floor even dust or trash particles.
You could always use the toilet grenade.

There was a great joke that Jimmy Doohan made during the infamous TOMORROW SHOW episode when they started discussing the lack of toilets on the Enterprise. Basically, it involved a phaser and good aim. "We lost more crew members because of that....."
I remember watching that live when I was a kid and just cracking up. That whole show is worth a watch if you've never seen it and a rewatch if you have.
what's a better demonstration that Star Trek is a utopia that it's a better gig being a janitor than a lawyer
I'd imagine advances in technology and an egalitarian Economic system has solved scarcity problems in that future, so vocations and careers are more based on passion, interests, necessity and self fulfilment rather than money.
@AdmiralBison what do the regular people do who aren't in starfleet.
@kalebisalwaysright with the base necessities being provided by automation and replicators, I imagine what jobs do remain, and whatever services people provide by their own work and passion, would be on more of a gift economy/reputation sort of system? Where instead of being a strict market, people are known by what sort of stuff they give to the community and to their neighbors, and receive in return.
One of the biggest issues with trying to understand star trek's economy is that none of our major economic systems are able to really deal with the level of automation and resource abundance the federation lives in - a problem we might want to try and resolve, given the rapid advancement in real life automation tech...
@@makepeoplemadI think most of those inconsistencies, rather than being "too utopian", are because of how hard it is for average viewers to imagine a post-capital world with how much the world has become commoditized.
@@danielnugent6545 Latinum likely exists as a currency because there are still Federation-allied civs that are capitalist, like Ferengi. That and, again, viewers (especially in the 60s/70s) have an issue getting post-capital.

I've worked for years in a meat market, I could certainly write an episode about that. Like Lieutenant Karen who never gets off of her communicator while she's ordering but thinks I'm rude when I throw a phaser at her.

I think what people tend to forget is that every person serving in Starfleet on a ship is a trained and qualified astronaut.
Former janitor/maintenance guy here. I love this - this character feels like a combination of several people I used to know (and maybe just a little of me too...).
No kidding! Nearly every ship in the fleet would have to have its own compliment of carpet cleaning staff.
Another former janitor here. It may not be the best job, but it is a good job. Few things are as satisfying as walking in to a mess and walking away from a sweet smelling job well done.

@@MadelineHere They probably do have cleaning robots for regular maintenance cleaning stuff. But someones gonna need to check their work. Did they cover the right areas at the right intervals. Are their crud hoppers emptying into the ships matter storage tanks. The a sapient being needs to tick a box and sign their name kinda stuff you see in large organizations.
I remember one episode where Picard said in his log that they were stopping at some starbase or another to "have the ship's excess baryons removed".
For those wondering, "baryons" is a fancy way of saying your normal, everyday protons and neutrons. So, in other words, sweeping the floor and emptying the trash.

That one always got me too! The sweep really is the interstellar equivalent of a car wash (that just happens to kill you).

All of these characters Steve comes up with ... and only them. Every other crewmember never enters the area the camera looks at, except maybe as a shadow (or a stain) or the like. Maybe a voice.

I was a janitor/maintenance guy when I was in high school and college. Despite having been an attorney and now a software developer, it was my favorite job I have ever had. I would probably still be doing work like that if it paid anything...
Seems like a really good gig, and no matter how automated the future gets there will need to be someone to clean stuff, so you wouldn't feel useless.
As soon as I saw the pepper mill as prop I knew where this was going.
Appreciate the respect with which you presented the custodian crew. I have never understood why so many people look down on the maintenance and cleaning guys. They clean literal shit! I don't have the stomach for that job. Show some respect.
You should write Star Trek books. These “lower decks”stories are great. It also highlights the fact that there ware so many other people on those ships and we never get to see how all the crazy stuff affects them.

I don't know WTF I just watched, but this man gets a gold medal for fantastic story telling!
This is funny but it also feels like the best of Star Trek. Here's an articulate, passionate person doing what he loves. He's empathetic and takes care of the people who work for him. I love the details like the story about the doctor, and how clear it was that the details mattered to him. It wasn't 'some ambassador,' and that attention to detail says a lot about this guy.
10/10 would bring him an egg sandwich.

I feel that one thing that separates a Federation ship from Klingons or even other sci-fi franchises like Star Wars is that the ships are clean and in good repair.
Saw a video essay commenting that the republic being clean and better maintained before the rise of fascism may have been deliberate. May have been Jessie Gender's "The Revolutionary Spirit of Star Wars Andor" video

The ending... completely flipped the meaning of the whole sketch. I felt like Riker in the mental institution when he sees that the "communication device" his fellow patient claims to have made turns out to just be a spoon.

I ran a Star Trek : Lower Decks TTRPG campaign, and one of the characters was a janitor and another worked in logistics.
Being a custodial supervisor at large university, this brought a smile to my face since I can so relate to it. Thanks!
I absolutely love these slice-of-life moments and 'lower-decks' perspectives on events from rarely-remembered episodes!! I could watch a whole playlist of these every day. Even though life in the Federation isn't perfect, I still long for progress in that direction, and seeing these makes it feel more real and possible. So, thank you! Incredibly well-done.
I like the way you pulled a Number One from 'The Cage' by looking up to talk to someone through the communicator at chest level... Excellent easter egg!
It's interesting how well you captured being a janitor. I do this job irl so a lot of the things you said about a person feels about doing the job is right on the money. Another interesting thing to note is how close we both were in our imagining the job for start fleet. I too imagined most of the work being automated with the exception of bio-hazard spills, unlike you I imagined drones helping out a lot more (even though those things aren't mentioned). I do like your interpretation a little better though.
Actually using the pepper pots at the end was a touch of genius.
I also really like the character encouraging his underling to have a break after whatever the hell went wrong in that science lab.
That’s also the same laser thermometer make they used as a prop in Enterprise, it certainly looks sufficiently futuristic!
I love the idea that the Galaxy class has both an Odyssey and a Ulysses. I’d totally buy the stuffy admirals naming those ships making that decision. Just like all the captains we were shown were stuffy old men.
Nice animation work on the warp transition and the door coming down as well, plus the narrative justification for only animating it a little bit. (Speaking of, Discovery _did_ have a door! It just wasn’t drawn attention to, and was only used while at warp. Just like in this sketch!)
You’re such a solid (comedy) writer, man. Been watching the ENTIRETY of your channel the last few months and I can’t imagine this sort of consistency is the easiest thing to manage, even for the most talented of us. The pace you’ve found is so impressive to me. An ego well deserved. Cheers.

This (and the lawyer episode) was brilliant! I immediately started thinking about all the other jobs, like many others have; as a fan of NCIS, my thought was the “Agent Afloat” and what that would mean in Starfleet.
I'm loving these. The next one has got to be the guy in the galley that had to make the egg sandwich.

The southern accent makes me think of Trip from Star Trek- Enterprise. There was a minor character from Star Trek- TNG , he was the head groundskeeper at Star Fleet Academy, portrayed by Ray Walston ( Uncle Martin in My Favorite Martian back in the 60s). He was an interesting character. In fact, his stories about the Star Fleet personnel he met over the course of his long life would make some interesting stories in a series.

When I was little my Dad and I would actually pretend to be janitors on the Enterprise (both Original and Next.) Out there washing windows while at warp speed and funny stuff like that. And now I'm an elementary school custodian and enjoy being one.
Friends and I for YEARS made the "worst job on the Enterprise is cleaning the holodeck" jokes. We considered that bit from Lower Decks vindication.
Love this. One to do has got to be the Supply and Requisitions guy. That one man who makes sure the ship is well stocked and always has a stash of Romulan Ale.
The full service restaurant! In PIC season 3, some people asked why there was a cook, and my thing was perhaps a captain has some leeway in what recreational facilities get put onboard; Picard set up a bar for his friend, but Shaw opened up a little bistro. Maybe a Saurian captain would set up a little wine bar.
It's a nice little touch to a ship.
Not the kinda stuff they do in the Navy though.
Lower-lower decks. Instead of Ensigns performing menial duties while trying to get promoted, here's a guy that likes his job and is happy to stick around... and he's got stories.

Loved the easter egg that some props were salt and pepper shakers. That 'plumbing phaser' I'm sure could also tell you the temperature of the clogged hair.
I really like these skits, the best thing about modern Star Trek is that it focuses on the roles you'd never expect in Starfleet.
I'd figure they'd just tell O'brien to do all the dirty jobs.
And he'd assign another engineer to it. Probably Rom.

I love how those stories he tells nonchalant are pretty much an entire season in its own right

The worst would be a janitor in a Nu-Trek ship. The poor lighting and the lens flares would make cleaning a nightmare.

There's a long tradition of fine space janitors. The bosses didn't like em so they shot em into space, but we like it out here.

I served in the US navy, in submarines. Can confirm, it sucks. There is nothing but casual (and not so casual) cruelty aboard a submarine. A toxic environment where you're never good, just less broken. There are no rewards for doing well, just punishment for transgressions. Actually in thinking about it, submarine service checks a lot of items from the BITE model...
I enjoyed the sketch! From my experience though, no CPO I know would tolerate "sir" by a junior rating. "I'm not some officer. I work for a living, dammit!" 😂
