Jaws is a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley. It stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, who, with the help of a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter (Robert Shaw), hunts a man-eating great white shark that attacks beachgoers at a summer resort town. Murray Hamilton plays the mayor, and Lorraine Gary portrays Brody's wife. The screenplay is credited to Benchley, who wrote the first drafts, and actor-writer Carl Gottlieb, who rewrote the script during principal photography.

Yeah shaw deserved the best supporting actor award for that speech alone. His character brings almost as much gravitas to the movie as the score.

In a tourist town, 70-90% of the annual income from hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops, and tourist attractions are made in the months of June through August. So "24 hours IS like 3 weeks".
It's weird how this movie has stood the test of time. I remember the 20th anniversary special on TNT in 1995. It was a huge deal. I used to study it like it was an assignment for a film-making class. In 2023, I'm still studying it like its an assignment for a film class and my future depends on it lol.
Keep in mind that story of the Indianapolis is about 90% true

Even a couple of years later in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". There are WWII facts presented in that film.

Urban legend about him being drunk. He was on the first take, but they skipped it until he sobered up the next day. The inaccurate part is speculative. Like the part of finding his baseball player friend. Possible but unproven.
Wow, you guys sure never tire of all commenting the same exact thing on every single Jaws reaction, lol. "The shark didn't work, Scheider improvised his line..." (which is actually not at all what happened) "....and the Indianapolis is a true story." Gotcha. The guy above you literally is commenting the same exact thing; the guy below you is yet another telling about the shark not working. You give someone a DVD for Christmas, or a copy of "Easy Riders, Hidden Dragons" (lol, whatever it's called), and all of a sudden they're Ben Mankiewitz! 🤣

The Robert Shaw speech about the Indianapolis was actually written by Shaw as I recall. As well as an actor he was also a writer.
It was rewritten by John Milius last minute then rewritten again by Shaw to sound more like Quit.
Since sharks are fish, and have gills, they need to keep moving, so the barrels would slow it down if not stop it moving and it would drown. thats why th barrels
Quint is a very interesting character. His behavior became more reckless the more the shark started besting him because psychologically, every time he killed a shark, it was sort of like he was cheating death from what happened on the Indianapolis. The fact that no matter what he tried, this shark wouldn't go down, it revved up his internal demons and he NEEDED to kill the shark... no help from anyone else, HE needed to kill it. It's a surprisingly common behavior for some people who have PTSD from past trauma. They need to keep "defeating" the thing that traumatized them. Fun reaction! :)

I have a theory that Quint is, maybe unconsciously, recreating the Indianapolis situation. He smashed the radio because in his story, "No distress signal was sent." He burned out the engine to strand them at sea. Did you notice the smirk on his face when he gave them the lifejackets? It's like he wants to reenact the disaster. He's never gotten over it.

Fun Fact: Several decades after the film's release, Lee Fierro (RIP), who played Mrs. Kintner, walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed "Alex Kintner Sandwich" on the menu. She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago; the owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her, and he was none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They had not seen each other since the original movie shoot. I'm told Jeff still owns the restaurant at Martha's Vineyard and he loves talking to fans.
Lost Attraction Fact: Quint's (Robert Shaw) boathouse set was built in Martha's Vineyard on an abandoned lot. The city council made the production crew sign an agreement to demolish it after filming and replace everything exactly as it had been, right down to the litter.
Writing Ensemble Fact: Quint's tale of the USS Indianapolis was conceived by playwright Howard Sackler, lengthened by screenwriter John Milius and rewritten by Robert Shaw following a disagreement between screenwriters Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb. Shaw presented his text, and Benchley and Gottlieb agreed that this was exactly what was needed. It's widely considered the best scene of the movie.
Another note on that scene.. when first shot RS was as usual a bit inebriated... RS felt it was not good enough and got sober and shot it again in one take... Perfection

I remember when I was about 7, being at my cousins' house watching this in their pitch dark basement.., back in the day when network tv stations had the "Saturday Night Movie" or "Sunday Night Movie". We wouldn't let our feet hang over the edge of the couch because we absolutely KNEW the shark would get us. 😀
The shark could not attack Brody’s son,cuz it had the guy in the boat in its mouth.

Since Bruce the shark often malfunctioned and could not be counted on to work when necessary, the main cast became a kind of repertory theater company and the script was often re-written with the help of the cast along with multiple instances of ad libbed lines and scenarios thought up on the spot. 70's guerilla filmmaking and stage improvisation at their finest. The famous U.S.S. Indianapolis speech was co-written by actor Robert Shaw (Quint), a playwright himself. Without the problems with the special effects, the film may not have turned out as well as it did. The story became less about the shark and more about the three main characters. John Williams came up with the two-note primal Jaws theme primarily because the audience rarely saw the shark until the third act. The now iconic music became the unseen menace.
A few may come on here saying that the shark shooting schedule went according to plan, but that's not what Spielberg, Scheider, Dreyfuss, Gary, and the producers have said in countless interviews and documentaries.
That's only true for the second half of the film.
Bruce was actually never scheduled to be used for the beach scenes. They were filmed in waist to chest deep water. It would have been impossible to use Bruce in the shallow water off State Beach and Harthaven.
The beach scenes were filmed in May and June 1974. Bruce was never scheduled to be used for any scenes until July when filming moved out to sea for the Orca based scenes. Bruce kept failing throughout July and August.

No not the shark scenes. The shark scenes with the shark not working (plus weather, tides, sailboats in the background etc) dragged the filming way over schedule and over budget.
Garl Gottlieb in The Jaws Log, however, wrote that the land based scenes went pretty well and by the time they went out to sea to film the shark scenes with the Orca in July they were only a few days behind schedule. The ocean screwed them, and the mechanical shark, up.
It all worked out to movie Magic! They amount they showed Jaws was perfect! Reading your comments really makes me want to watch behind the scenes . Thank you both!

You're welcome. Yes the making of Jaws is a story in itself. There are a number of books and documentaries about this. There is even a current stage play starring Robert Shaw's son Ian as his father called The Shark Is Broken. I saw it in London in 2021. It's soon to open in America. It takes place on an Orca boat replica (well, just the cabin) and Ian is utterly brilliant as his father.

My friends and I saw this movie in IMAX in 2015 for the 40th anniversary. It was fantastic. One of the best theatre experiences ever.
The story of the USS Indianapolis recounted by Robert Shaw was historically accurate. Happy 4th of July

I think because of his WWII experience that Quint suffered from survivor's dilemma and harbored a latent death wish.

If you watch Dreyfuss in the scene with Shaw recounting the Indianapolis, his mouth was open and he was enraptured, that wasn't acting. Robert Shaw took the scene home beforehand and as he was an award winning playwright himself, reworked the entire scene and that was the first time anyone has seen it all the way through. Fun fact: Shaw was a prolific alcoholic and wanted to do the scene drunk but Spielberg said nope. Shaw and Dreyfuss hated each other. Dreyfuss claimed Shaw bullied him unmercifully and Spielberg allowed it because it gave realism to the characters. One other fun fact: the scene on the beach with the boy getting eaten, Spielberg wanted to use more blood but his team correctly said what's filmed was MORE than enough. Excellent film and movie history. An absolute catastrophe for sharks which are NOTHING like how they're portrayed here. Spielberg has expressed his regret for his movie causing so much death and destruction to an entire species because people can't seem to separate fact from fiction and realize a movie is fiction. Unless it's Schindler's List

I was a young teenager when I saw this movie in '75 in California. And going to the beach that summer put a majority of beach goers with the thought of "Oh yeah, there's sharks in the water." And now with drone tech, you literally see sharks passing by swimmers in California as the shark has a "pay no mind list" towards the swimmers. I even had an episode of a shark swimming underneath me & with a shoreline full of people in the water, not one attack occurred that day. Loved your reaction video Cami !!! The look on your face when Bruce popped his head out of the water for the first time WAS PRICELESS !!! And Quinn's story of the USS Indianapolis IS A TRUE STORY !!! Happy 4th of July !!! Roy Scheider (sheriff) also starred in another move: Blue Thunder. It's about a cop flying a futuristic helicoopter designed to supress urban violence using different types of armaments.
Besides JAWS, his big roles were in The French Connection and All That Jazz...Oscar nominations for both.
26:40 This monologue was only supposed to take about 30 seconds, it basically consisted of his first and last lines: "Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, chief. It was comin' back, from the island of Tinian Delady, just delivered the bomb. Eleven hundred men went in the water, three hundred and sixteen men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb." Robert Shaw knew the real story of what happened to the Indianapolis so he ad-libbed the whole monologue.
"What do we do? What do we do?" You follow the orders of your Captain as he has the knowledge and experience to know what to do. But whatever You do.
You Do Not disobey your Captain and go running off "to make a phone call," as that puts the whole crew at risk.
Nice one. I was 12 when this premiered and my family used to vacation on Nantucket Island (Amity is modeled after Martha’s Vineyard, right next door). My parents were wise enough not to let me go. It was a summer sensation. The Islanders thought it was ridiculous but everyone was talking about it. Tourist fishermen caught hundreds of small baby sharks and let them to die on the beach. I remember people being upset by that. Very sad.
Joe Alves, the production designer, was actually recommended to scout Nantucket for filming locations by Jaws author Peter Benchley. Apparantely the ferries were disrupted and Alves couldn't get there so he decided to check out Martha's Vineyard instead, and he found it perfect.
Jaws could well have been filmed in Nantucket if not for disrupted ferries.

A summer beach town in New England only earns its primary income for the 3 summer months. If no money comes in then, businesses fail, jobs and homes are lost, families are on welfare til the next summer. So yes, 24 hours is like 3 weeks for business people depending on tourism for the summer. The mayor had a much bigger reason for needing to keep them open in the book, but the movie left that out. Also in 1975 there was no Discovery Channel, no shark week, the general population wasn't as aware of sharks as we are now. Still you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning than attacked by a shark. Also note: his teeth weren't falling out and he wasn't a wreck near the end, those were bits of QUINT in his teeth.

Many years since filming, mother (Lee Fierro), who lost her son, Alex Kintner (Jeffery Voorhees) went to a local restaurant where serves "Alex Kintner sandwich" with her friends. Owner of the restaurant is Jeffery Voorhees, and he heard that his "mother" came in for lunch. Jeffery went and met her since last time they were during filming.
the sub plot of the animosity between Quint and Hooper is interesting. They were both on a mission to get the shark, but with different points of view. while Hooper loved sharks and had a scientific interest, he wanted pictures first, and had all the modern equipment. Quint, on the other hand hated them since the Indianapolis incident and made it his life to kill as many as he could, It wasn't until the leg scene that Quint respected Hooper, but upon hearing Quint's story Hooper gained a new understanding & respect for Quint. When Quint mentioned the Indianapolis Hooper got quiet, having studied sharks for so long, he was familiar with the incident. Quint wanted to be in charge and out of pride, resisted/ignored any suggestion by Hooper about any modern ways to kill it. When the ship was totally disabled Quint took a huge gulp of pride to ask Hooper what he could do. One thing I think they had in common was thinking Brody was weak and useless, Quint was fed up with it, and I think it was partly why he smashed the radio.

We tend to figure that it's okay to go swimming where a shark has been spotted previously, under the impression that we can just have people _watching_ for it, and if one of 'em _spots_ the shark, they can just blow the whistle and everyone will just get _out._
The problem with this is that people _panic._ Do we get out of the water in an _orderly_ fashion? No. We get out in a _panicked_ fashion, and sometimes, in the melee, people get seriously _hurt;_ maybe _killed._

When Quint busted the radio and drove the boat's engine to the point of breaking, exhibited a touch of Captain Ahab's fruitless obsession with Moby Dick-man versus the evil of nature.

It's heavy.
Or rather, it's very light and full of air.
That makes it buoyant. It floats and it's super hard to sink it.
How hard?
About 433 pounds, roughly, to push it under water.
Most strong men can't lift that weight even an inch off the ground, but you would have to put that much weight on top of one of these barrels to sink it.
So what's the point?
If the shark stays near the surface, they can see it, shoot it, harpoon it, catch it, or kill it.
If the shark dives deep under the water, they can't do any of that.
Attach a few barrels to the shark, and it won't be strong enough to pull them down into the water.
Even with just one, that would be like you going for a walk with a hundred pounds on your shoulders - after a little while, you would find it exhausting. After all day, you'd be so exhausted you couldn't even move.
Make the shark exhausted, make it come to the surface, then kill it.
That's the plan.
I'm sure it's been mentioned that the Indianapolis ship story is an actual WW II event.
3:13 One thing at which Steven Spielberg has _consistently_ excelled is building _tension._ Here, you get an illustration of just how _dangerous_ the shark is without actually _seeing_ it. That happens over and over again, in this movie.
Yes!! This is something I missed greatly in Jaws 2 . The buildup was different. The timing and amount the shark was shown here is just perfect!
The barrels were used to tire the shark out. They add weight to the shark when he tries to swim especially when he tries to dive. And it will slow him down.

But fourth, and I think this one is the _most_ telling, the only man telling him it _is_ safe comes to the beach in a suit and _tie_ instead of a _bathing_ suit, with clearly no intention of actually going _in._

I have seen countless reactions to this movie and you were the first to notice Chief Brody had a scar as well. Maybe the novel sheds some light into this, but I've never read it.

JAWS 2 lacked the fun and adventure of the first one, but it doubled down on the nightmare fuel and its tagline Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Go Back Into the Water was iconic. Jaws 3D is not great but I still kind of love it and credit Dennis Quaid and Lou Gossett Jr and Lea Thompson for making me care about their characters. As for Jaws 4 The Revenge... at least it's got Michael Caine, the paycheck for which he earned for this movie bought his mother a lovely house as legend goes, lol.
I only watch the second one. Because it's great horror movie to wafch.

Mechanical Great White as production crew nicknamed, "Bruce" after Steven Spielberg's lawyer, Bruce Ramer had issues during filming. Special visual crew had to improvised effects of the shark. Mold that use to create various "Bruces" for closeups was found in a junkyard. Mold was restored and mounted at Academy Museum for Motion Pictures.

19:35 there's footage of a cut version of this scene where the guy in the dinghy was going to be dragged along the surface just like Chrissie Watkins in the beginning, grabbing michael and pulling him along as he got carried off by the shark. Terrifying stuff.
The leader wire was 'bitten' through not snapped. That's what Quint was telling Hooper. A marlin or stingray or tuna can't bite through the line. A shark with sharp teeth can.
Great white sharks of over 17ft and over 3,300 pounds have been caught on rod and reel. That must be around the maximum. Larger great whites have not been able to be caught on rod and reel. They've either snapped the line or pulled out the hooks. Their power is too much.
36:22 this was before we knew that Great White sharks could actually breach like that. The shark does it several times in the book and it was considered, I think, kinda silly at the time.
I don't think Quint wanted to die. His obsession got the better of him. This is like a modern day Moby Dick.
I think my favorite scene in the movie was when Brody was bonding with his son at the dinner table.
I agree, Richard Dreyfuss is a great actor. George Lucas, who had worked with him on American Graffiti, recommended him to Spielberg. Dreyfuss originally turned down the role, but was eventually convinced. He later had nothing but praise for Spielberg, who was still relatively unknown at the time. Dreyfuss was also great in another Spielberg movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Robert Shaw (Quint) was also good in The Sting, with Robert Redford and Paul Newman.

Hooper was supposed to die in the original script but while filming real shark footage a very large Great White got stuck in the cage. When a great white gets in a spot like this it fights for it's life. The action was so good they let Hooper live. In the novel he died. It made the the movie even better.

During the making of Jaws, the mechanical shark barely worked. So Steven Spielberg was forced to take a more Hitchcock aproach to the movie and not show the shark, but let your imagination run wild.
You should see the version of the Kitner death they didn't use. There are black and white photos from it online. It's really spooky.

When the sailing instructor says to roll in or pull in the sheet and make it fast, he was referring to the sailing gear, and to make fast is not a speed reference, but rather to make secure. The Chief had an appendectomy scar..,..not exactly in the same league. After living thru the Indianapolis, wouldn't you kinda have a death wish?

That Annapolis speech by Shaw is a classic by anyone's standard. Interesting to note he was very drunk at the time.

Actually, this is wrong for a few reasons.
1. Sharks never do what this one does. Sharks eat something then swim away, miles away, dozens of miles, before they eat again. They never stay in one place like this one. Poor Chrissy, she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. If this was the real world instead of a monster movie, she would be the only person attacked by this shark.
2. Mayor Vaughn would know this. He would know there won't be any more shark attacks. He would know there is no reason to close the beaches. Real world mayors sometimes close the beaches after a shark attack, just so they look like they're doing something, but a lot of the time they just leave the beaches open and nothing ever happens.
3. This town makes nearly all its money in the summer, and a big chunk of that is on the 4th of July weekend. Close the beach, even for a day, and the tourists all go somewhere else for most of the summer, and all these small businesses lose their summer money. That means a lot of them might go out of business forever. People lose their jobs and their homes.
4. The mayor knows this too. If he closes the beaches, the people who depend on him for their livelihood lose their jobs and homes. For what? To pretend he's protecting people from a repeat shark attack that will never happen.
In the end, if this were the real world instead of a monster movie, the mayor keeping the beaches open IS protecting the safety of the people.
Poor Mayor Vaughn, nobody told him he's in a monster movie so his decision, while perfect for the real world, looks very bad in this movie.

The book written by Peter Benchley (who portrays the news reporter on the beach) is excellent. The movie left out a lot of sub plots. Hooper and Chief's wife had an affair. The mayor was involved with the Mafia owing them money (reason he is the way he is) ... Hooper does die in book.
Except for a few things, like the affair between Hooper and Ellen, the book is the best 'shark' novel I have read. And I've read many. The ending in the novel is not as explosive but still memorable.
And Peter Benchley was a news writer for a TV station when he wrote the book.
Chief Brody scar is probably appendix scar and he felt it not worthy to bring up in this scene.

The towns people at the meeting are upset about closing the beach because their is a tourist town, and most of them are small business owners. The beaches are the biggest tourist draw, and the 4th is their biggest holiday. If they shut down the beaches in the middle of summer, a lot of them could lose a whole lot of money, or even go broke.
Just because a car crashes do we shut down the roads? No. They could warn the beach goers stay close to shore. Kids need an adult. But yeah, if they shut the beaches down, the town gets hit hard. Keep the beaches open and let the people decide if they wanna go into the water. We are adults.

I'll have to look into that. Offhand I don't know of a really serious shark attack around 4th July in America in recent years. Other countries don't have 4th July celebrations obviously.
Im sure if a major attack, as in someone eaten, at a beach on 4th July the beach would be closed off for a while.

There is a limit to how much footage can be shown
The barrels cause drag and tires the shark out, image if someone put 100lbs of bricks in a backpack on you while you're running

A bit late, but two little tidbits about the differences between the movie and the book. In the book, Hooper a) has an affair with the chief's wife and b) gets killed by the shark when it busts up the cage.
Everyone thought Quint was gonna live. That part was very upsetting to see him go like that.
1. Goof: Chrissie's body parts are too far up the beach to have been washed up there without a storm.
2. Boy Scouts don't need to do the mile swim to get their merit badge. It's an accomplishment all its own.
3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off.
4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed, and the movie needed something earlier. Works every time.🤣🤣
5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along, so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen.
6. The boy that said, "He made me do it' is now the Police Chief of the town where this movie was filmed.
7. Hooper was right. The fish that hit the line was a game fish.
8. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest adlibs in history. It was the first time Roy actually saw Bruce. It was an ongoing trope within the filming due to budgetary problems.
9. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER.
10. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the story.
11. I was in the Navy, and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting a shark.
12. Aside from the pool used in the Ben Gardner boat scenes, all of the shipboard scenes were filmed entirely at sea,
13. In the book not only does Hooper die but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody.
14. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including the mayors' son.
15 The third one was so bad that Scheider read the script and said NO.

I saw this at the theater in our small town. I was 9. It's super hot right now, and whenever it's super hot, I always think of Jaws. It was super hot the night we went to see it. The entire place was packed. I've never seen a theater totally packed again. Close but not totally. Saturday Night Fever and Star Wars.
Something about this movie that always bugs me, even though it's completely unimportant, is how weakly and quietly the girl says "shark, it's a shark!" in the scene where it goes into the pond and kills the man in the little row boat. It reminds me of Willy Wonka going "No, don't, come back", only she was being sincere.

Well, JAWS is PG... lol, probably one of the original films to make people ask themselves... do we need a PG-13 rating and about 9 years later, Spielberg again made them say, hell, yes, we need a PG-13 rating. To this day, I still don't understand how 2001 was rated G? Lol.

If you feel the need to say something vapid like 'you can't put a price on a human life' then yeah, you can, it's $120,000. What you mean is 'there's no amount of money you could offer for me to be fine with giving up my life' which is a very, very different thing.
The flip side is the suggestion that this guy from New York, who knows nothing about the sea, could be right, that there is a shark at all, and might be completely abnormal and might attack again. Once it does, they close the beaches. It's the rest of the town that screams and hollers at doing so, NOT Larry. You can argue he shows little backbone when he capitulates to their demands, sure, but this is literally his job.
Larry gets a lot of shit but everything he does is 100% consistent with his role as mayor if you are able to run through what he knows to be true, and what he fears might be true, and what his job actually is. Spielberg even gives us the line 'Martin, MY KIDS were on that beach.'
Watch it again, and when you do, watch Larry. His body language is superb, you can see a whole other plot running through what he looks at, his expressions, and what he does with his hands. It's a masterful display of acting.
Interesting to think about! I will have to watch it again! I really noticed his concern for Chief Brody in Jaws 2. Just watched it for the channel. I would like to watch Jaws again to pick up on the subtleties. Thanks!

If you're curious, six billion is based on the population of Martha's Vineyard in 1975, 10,000, their average income, $40,000, for the entire year, inflation adjusted. It doesn't account for the probable reduction to overall income in following years, so it'd likely be higher.
And yes, Larry's a bit different in J2 but you have to remember he never saw the second half of the first film, so to him, Martin might well seem paranoid and crazy. Assuming Matt returns to, wherever he came from I forget, what Larry gets is the greatest fishing story ever told with no evidence.
