Definitely one of the greatest ever, based on how incredibly close he was to breaking Rocky Marciano's record, how many times he defended his title, being Heavyweight Champion of the world for 7 years, and the age gap between Larry and his opponents in his 21 times of successfully defending his title. The argument can be made that Larry Holmes may have actually been the greatest of all time !

Larry was his own worst enemy. He cherry picked many of his fights and never attempted to unify all the belts. He had three very controversial decision wins against Ken Norton, Tim Witherspoon, and Carl Williams. He never had rematches with any of them. I have Larry, Ali and Joe Louis as my top 3 GOAT Heavyweights. They swap positions on my pedestal every day of the week. After that I like Lennox Lewis & Jack Johnson. That's my top 5.
Schmeling smeared Louis first. Marciano would've easily beat down Holmes due to pure POWER/STAMINA/GUTS. Shit, even Tyson Fury would've smoked Larry Mondello err Holmes. zzzz next?!?
@@atheistleopard618 Tyson Fury rates Larry Holmes as one of the top 5 heavyweights of all time. He studied Holmes and wanted to have a kab as good as him.
I hated Larry Holmes for decades because of how he beat Muhammad Ali. Ali was one of my heroes, and I was really angry that Holmes beat him that way. But then I started watching his fights on CZcams, and I started to get an appreciation for his skills. The more I watched, the more I came not only to respect Larry Holmes, but to like him. He wasn't the bad guy I always thought he was after the Ali fight. Now he's one of my all time favorite fighters, and he is arguably the second greatest Heavyweight Champion of all time. I honestly believe he could have taken Foreman and Frazier. And Sonny Liston would have never been able to handle his speed or his jab. Over the last 15 years or so Holmes has finally been getting his due. That jab may have been the best ever, too!
yeah, a lot of people know about the Ali fight and villainize Holmes over it. Ali shouldn't have been in the ring, but we can't blame Holmes for that. He even cried after the fight. Nobody ever gives Marciano shit for beating a mummified version of Joe Louis.
Holmes was the Rodney Dangerfield of boxing. " I don't get no respect" is all that he could say back then. He got respect for his boxing but he had a shitty personality and then let a light heavy weight take his title. He was no Ali or Marciano or Joe Louis. Still he was good in his particular era.
Holmes is truly one of the greats, but his biggest issue is that he was a victim of the times. Unfortunately, he came along during the decline of the heavyweight division. It would be great to see everyone face off in their prime, but that just not how things work.
Why didn't he try unifying all the heavyweight belts? Becoming the unified undisputed champion would have gone a long way towards getting him the credit and recognition that he craved.

3:09 - 3:18 Jody Ballard's professional debut was in 1974 so there's *no way* he would have sparred with Ali or Frazier in their respective primes. I've always like Holmes and he might have been as good as a prime Frazier but he certainly wasn't as good as a prime Ali.

Larry Holmes was playing the role of Jersey Joe Walcott to Gerry Cooney's Rocky Marciano .Holmes was an unpopular dull champion but also an excellent fighter .Holmes didn't follow the script against Cooney and beat the white hope in 13 rounds .No disgrace for Gerry Cooney because Larry Holmes was one of greatest heavyweights of all time .Unfortunately for Larry Holmes he was a plain looking man following the handsome charismatic Muhammad Ali .To the then mostly white America population he was just yet another black heavyweight champion .
True. You've usually gotta sell yourself and have some sort of charisma or aura about you to be the best. Larry seemed like a very down to earth normal guy which probably didn't give him that appeal after all it's the entertainment business. But he is one of the all time greats and considered to have the best jab.
@@truenews7037 I used to like really like Holmes as a man .As you say he had an incredible jab .Though later I learned many fighters accused Holmes of thumbing them in the eye .I think several boxer required eye operations after challenging Larry Holmes .I think Muhammad Ali would have beaten any version of Larry Holmes before the George Foreman fight .Still Larry Holmes was a great fighter and a formidable opponent in his prime for anyone .Cooney was a talented boxer and could have probably beaten any other heavyweight in the world in 1982 with the exception of Larry Holmes
@@martinjones2327 oh yeah definitely a prime Ali would have beaten him no doubt. IMO the best two heavyweights of all time were Ali and Joe Louis. Tyson in his very early days when he was still Kid Dynamite and still training with Kevin Rooney could of went on to be unstoppable but once he went under the management of Don King he lost his head movement as well as all the other stuff he got caught up in outside of boxing. Tysons still one of the greats but he had the potential to be much better. I didn't know about fighters accusing Holmes of thumbing them in the eye, doesn't seem like it would be easy to do with a jab though, maybe it was just the technique he used by twisting the jab? Either way he seemed like a good family man outside of the ring. Glad he's finally been given the recognition he deserves, seems like that's all he ever wanted!
@@truenews7037 Yes Tyson seemed amazing when he first emerged with his hand speed and punch .Mike Tyson was taught to move his head to negate the reach of his taller opposition .Holmes apparently thumbed Earnie Shavers, Muhammad Ali, Scott Frank and Scott Ledoux in the eye .Though most heavyweight champions fight dirty at some point .Yes Larry Holmes did seem a decent family man outside the ring in contrast to many promiscuous former champions .Joe Louis also had great hand speed and an incredible punch. I remember someone telling me Max Schelling screamed out in pain when Joe Louis hit him in their rematch .The weakness for Joe was his relatively soft chin .Joe Louis still managed 25 defences of the title .Ali didn't have a weakness perhaps except not having the one punch power to finish a fight .Tyson and Louis could take you out with one punch .Ali of 1967 would have probably have beaten any other fighter in history .Larry Holmes also displayed great longevity in fights with Evander Holyfield and Ray Mercer .
How about Larry sticking with his wife after all this time? She stood by him when he had nothing and always supported him and his dream to make it big In boxing. Pretty cool
7 years the Heavyweight champ. A significantly better fighter than Mike Tyson in both longevity and title defenses. Yet because he came after Muhammed Ali and was not a knock out artist like Tyson who fought mostly tomato cans, he is not given the respect he rightly deserves for putting in the work \ and the pride and the effort of living a clean life of a true champion and not the classless displays of a man child who could not control himself in and out of the ring. Larry, real boxing fans miss your type of champion that no longer exists in today's fighters.

@@atheistleopard618 lol
@@atheistleopard618 ...you're not all there, are you? 😂
@@atheistleopard618 Tyson Fury rates Larry Holmes as one of the top 5 heavyweights of all time. He studied Holmes and wanted to have a kab as good as him.
Mine are klitzschkos, Marciano, Tyson
The last great heavy until Tyson, awesome jab.
Remember fans of LH how Mike 🥋🥊 Tyson ko this fellow Holmes🥊💀
Why didn't he try unifying all the heavyweight belts? Becoming the unified undisputed champion would have gone a long way towards getting him the credit and recognition that he craved.
Both Holmes' fights with Spinks were fixed. Was common knowledge at the time.
Facts!!!
Don king? I’m curious.
@@Hito856 King and the rest of them. What people may not realize is that every single fight was controlled and governed by the Mob who also controlled ALL the betting establishments!!!
I love you Big Brother Larry "THE CHAMP" Holmes.. never knew all this friend. Sorry to hear about your struggles with the controllers of Chaos.
That's a great documentary - shame about the audio sync issues (progressively worse as it goes on).
Greatest heavyweight I ever watched fight.
Alright drop out of public school at 13, I would grade school and Middle School in New York public schools. I was supposed to attend public school in Detroit Michigan I refused going to public school in the inner cities of America it's like going to jail for 8 hours a day. Larry had a learning disability like me so public school was a waste of time I got a little job like Larry.
love them both but larry my fav more skill poll jab best jab in the game
U don't know boxing...Holmes fought in a real weak ERA... barely beat a 35 yr old Norton for the title...never fought anyone
