    Auto pistol advantage: Capacity / firepower
    Revolver advantage:
    (1)Can fire much more effective bullet designs due to no feeding issues; extremely deadly & destructive wide flat nosed bullet (80+% caliber meplats), capable of ripping large diameter tunnels completely thru large animals.
    (2)firing single action, a revolver is capable of precision accuracy at long ranges that an auto pistol is mechanically incapable of.
    (3) Simpler, more robust & reliable, less failure-prone mechanics. There are original Colt Single Action revolvers from the 1870's still firing will all original, never replaced parts. And that is in firing the original very powerful 45 Colt cartridge loading of 40 grains black powder, 255 gr bullet at 1000 fps.
    (4) Round for round, especially considering Point 1, the revolver can be a more powerful, much deadlier weapon, effectively offsetting lower capacity.
    (5) Round for round the revolver is a much more accurate handgun than the auto pistol; not an advantage at close range, but at longer range, the revolver's far greater precision accuracy can offset lower capacity.
    (6) for many, the revolver has more intuitive, easy handling mechanics that aid first round hit capability, which can offset lower capacity.
    (7) Revolver grips are not affected by magazine shape, so revolver grips are much more moldable to the individual, aiding first round hit capability, offsetting lower capacity.
    (8)Considering Points 1, 4,5,6 & 7, the revolver has a major advantage in first round hit capability, offsetting low capacity. If you hit effectively and drop'em on the first shot, more capacity is no advantage.
    (9)For military & police use, (especially military) the auto is a better choice due to having a magazine fed firepower advantage. For a civilian self defense shooter, usually alone with no backup, reliability, first round hit capability, and first round deadly effect, may be far more important than capacity / firepower.
    (10) Firepower advantage for the auto is only with preloaded mags on hand; run the mags dry and the firepower advantage shifts to the revolver!
    (Summation)Comparing both designs carefully, side by side the auto enjoys greater capacity / firepower. Otherwise, in practically all other categories, the revolver is totally superior in every way to the auto pistol!

      I can't think of a reputable military, police force, intelligence organisation etc. who uses a revolver, but maybe my memory is slipping in my old age.

    • @63DW89A
      @63DW89A Před 7 lety +1

      In the U.S. for military/police use, the revolver is typically used for backup, or as primary in certain special situations: example The S&W TRR8 8-shot 357 Mag revolver was developed especially for SWAT team point men to prevent close contact auto pistol malfunctions.
      For military & police use, (especially military) the auto is preferred due to having a magazine fed firepower advantage. In mIlitary/police operations, backup is almost always on hand so a malfunction is tactically covered by backup.
      However, for a citizen self defense shooter, the revolver may well be a better choice, because the citizen is usually alone with no backup, so reliability, accuracy, first round hit capability, and first round deadly effect, may be far more important than capacity / firepower. And in those particular areas the revolver performs superbly.

    I love old revolvers, I collect old civil war black powder revolvers. The thing that made the revolvers so incredible was the first time it was used to save a group of Texas Rangers. They were fighting Indians, and the Indians saw that the Rangers had fired, and that meant that traditionally it would take a long time before they'd finish reloading and be able to fire again. But these Texas Rangers had Colt Paterson revolvers with them, and so when the Indians came charging in, the Rangers just kept on firing. This big time changed the face of combat in those instances. Having said that, guns progress over time and get better as time goes on. You grab a big revolver to go bear hunting or to shoot a spaghetti western these days. For concealed carry go with a standard gun, for defense of your home go for the AR-15 and if you some day find yourself out bear hunting, grab a 357 Magnum just in case lol

    When I get in trouble I want to have the least things to worry about. Point at enemy. Pull trigger.
    I don't need to worry about safeties, slides etc..
    I can fire a revolver with a shrouded hammer from my pocket. If I am on a trail I want something reliable. No springs. No magazines to lose.
    Self defence..it doesn't matter what I shoot if I can't hit my target.

Some people,for whatever reason, (lack of practice for a lot of different reasons, which would become a problem with any ftf,physical inability as far as racking etc.,but mainly the lack of training,not placing blame thee cold be a lot of reasons for the lack of practice and training). In those case the revolver would rein supreme. Just pick it up and shoot. Off hand busy in a struggle, still shoot.

    After shooting since I was 8 yrs old and grew up hating revolvers most of my life, once I hit about 35 I realized that I've never needed a gun in self defense, most likely I never will and more important than the type of gun or capacity is being aware of what's going on around you. If someone sneaks up on you and puts a gun to your spine and they intend to shoot you it doesn't matter if you have a 50 Rd gun. If you go for your gun, you're going to get shot. If you see something coming and get the drop on the person, if you have a 38 special Derringer you can come out of it just fine. I carry 2 S&W 5 shot old school 1971 38 specials. Between speedstrips and speedloaders and my 2 38's I have 46 rounds of ammo. I'm not worried about carrying that. Plus I have 2 guns and can fire in 2 directions and have 10 rnds on tap at any time. I just got to a point after carrying autos for so long that I realized I'm not going to get into a Hollywood shootout and if it's my time to die so be it. There are a lot worse things than death. When it's my time it's my time. No matter where I'm at or what I'm doing when my time is up, it's up. I won't be taking that trip to the afterlife alone. I think anyone should carry what they want. If someone likes autos, cool go for it. Revolvers did many people well for 130 years. A gun is better than no gun, but I just plan for the places I go. If I was going to crazy ass places, I'd have my Shotgun and my magnums too, but at the grocery store or Walgreens or the pet food store, not counting on some wild shit to go down. I also carry a gun to get myself out of trouble, not to engage in it.

    Weight depends on the individual gun, not so much whether it is a revolver or semiauto. For example, the Smith & Wesson 642 is a pretty popular carry revolver expressly because it is so lightweight (aluminum alloy frame), but that makes it harder to shoot well than some semiautos that people carry. That's in addition to its double-action trigger pull.

    Question: In a harsh environment situation, if each ( pistol & revolver) were accidentally dropped on their side onto a hard or rocky surface, would the delicate small parts that actually rotate and hold the cylinder be more likely to sustain damage that would put the wheel gun out of action? I can see the pistol sustaining cosmetic damage, but not sure what else. I am open to being educated. Thanks, Jason. Appreciate your even handed, level headed approach !!

    Watching countless media has deterred me from owning a revolver: security footage, cop drills, and Hollywood (fake, I know)... but it's always the same problem. Our hero spends all 5+ rounds, gets pinned down, struggles to get the wheel open and takes all day to reload... if he/she wasn't spilling bullets everywhere that is. They rarely think to ever use moon clips/speed loaders.

      Put an empty revolver and an empty auto pistol side by side on the bench at the range, each with a 50 round box of ammunition. Guarantee you the revolver will put 50 rounds down range faster than the auto. The Auto firepower advantage is ONLY with pre loaded mags. Run the mags dry and firepower advantage shifts to the revolver.

    Today we are spoiled. Modern factory ammunition is as close to perfect as anything made by man could ever be. Given that is the case then semi-autos will be able to function with almost perfect reliability. But will that always be the case? What do you think you will need your pistol for?
    If there is a serious long term SHTF situation the availability of good quality ammo may be limited. One may have to scrounge for any ammo they can get. Maybe it will be ammo that wasn't always stored properly. Maybe it will have been ammo that was reloaded by somebody who wasn't that skilled at it. In extreme situations, maybe it will be ammo that was reloaded with black powder because modern smokeless powders weren't available. A decent revolver can handle questionable ammo of spotty quality better than a semi-auto can. A decent revolver can handle black powder loads without serious problems (though you do have to be serious about cleaning them ASAP after use). A semi-auto wouldn't be able to function for more than a few rounds at most with black powder before it ceased to function, necessitating a full field strip and rigorous cleaning.
    So, as I see it one's perceived need for the weapon will be an important factor. If you are mainly worried about having to deal with serious fire fights in a realitively short term then a semi-auto is going to be your best go to choice. If you are worried about SERE/ hunting during long duration SHTF scenarios then a revolver would be a better choice.
    Two last points. In an extreme situation, your typical large heavy all steel revolver will make a much better club than any Glock ever made could. And if you're really serious about having to handle fire fights, you need a battle or assault rifle clone, not a pistol.

    If you prefer a Desoto over a Lexus, you're a revolver lover. If you think Harley Davidsons are high tech, you're a revolver lover. Revolvers don't have as much energy onboard without a reload. Most gunfights are not a fair fight and you will most likely be facing three people. In most gunfights the last person that runs out of ammo wins.

    • @63DW89A
      @63DW89A Před 5 lety +1

      +BulletSpoung In most gunfights, the first person to hit center mass stops the fight. A small-frame 38 revolver will get into action much faster and hit center mass much more quickly than sub compact and compact autos. As far as engaging multiple assailants, I've run drills on "3 Assailant Targets", and two small frame 38/357 revolvers will "center-mass" 3 targets before a single auto can hit the 2nd target. This drill was run using a Taurus 85, a S&W 36, and a Taurus 605, all equipped with Crimson Trace Laser grips. The revolvers are carried on left and right hips, using in-waist-band holsters. The revolvers are drawn simultaneously, but fired sequentially, as laser dot hits center mass. Draw both revolvers at danger signal, hit right target with right-hand revolver, left target with left-hand revolver, then center target with right hand revolver, or left-right-center sequence if the left target is engaged first. It doesn't take long to improve weak-hand shooting skills dramatically, and by firing sequentially, it is easy to get center-mass hits lightning quick with two revolvers, especially with Laser sights. Also, two compact revolvers on each hip are easier to carry and conceal, than one "blocky" auto.
