When I had horses they did not need to be shod since they were mostly pets and were not used for hard work. So I regularly just trimmed their hooves. One horse liked it so much he would actually lay down and place his hoof in my lap. Our donkey would fall asleep when I did his hooves, so I had to lean him against a wall. Funniest part was waking him up to turn him around and do the other side. He would promptly fall asleep again! His only flaw was that he hated goats.

The sheer power of the beast, it's a miracle that Man has managed to tame them and that Farriers do this essential and exhausting work with such skill and patience both on the part of the horse and the farrier

Succes verder. Jos De Graaf. Docent Kunst- en Siersmeden.
One can save oneself much of the strain and also make it easier for the horse when one properly trains the horses to give their feet. Then brute strength is replaced by the willingness of the horse to cooperate. My horses ( 1050 and 1100 kg) are being shod without a shoeing stock, just cradles to place their feet in and they are relaxed. That being said, this farrier is good.
Yup, training them to pick up their hooves helps. I've cleaned hooves from shetland's to big draft horses of 19hh, all you need to do is properly train them or just lean into them a little bit. This method in the video actually makes it harder and it doesn't help that horses are claustrophobic either.
@@MaritsView You have apparently never SHOD draft horses have you??? Even when they stand well, they are extremely heavy and the work involved requires time, under that weight..I have done it with and without a stock and doing it without, will break you down,in half the time..

I’ve got a friend with a Belgian and I have to say, I’ve never seen the need to shoe a horse this way. I’ve got three horses myself and I’ve never seen anything like this before. It was interesting to watch.
It might be a bit easier if someone taught the horse to pick up his own feet. I've shod a lot of drafts. They all picked up their own feet simply by squeezing the tendons. Then they were taught to rest their feet on a hoof cradle so no stocks were needed.
I know their feet are heavy. I've shod many draft horses. I'm talking about teaching them to lift their feet up themselves so you can strap them to the stocks rather tha needing three people to pull the foot up.
I helped my father shoe his horses many times right out in the drive way or even the barn yard., the horse picked up their own feet when he grabbed the hair and gave it a tug.
I just love draft horses of all types. They are wonderful, big teddy bears! I'm no expert, but I couldn't help but wonder if there was an easier way to do this. However I can see the farrier is good. Has to be a lot of hard work.

guess im jst a bit in shocked yet still intrigued to learn something new...being around horses all my life, this type of horse in a stand farrier is different. I'm used to the blacksmith who picks up the horses hoof and holds it between the legs and does the work. have they ever tried without the stand?
Well lets see, he was put in a stock a chain used to keep him in, he had a horrible looking bridle on his face with blinkers. Last but not least he was practically being hog-tied to get his feet up so you could work on them. This is brute force, I think I would be upset.
When you take the horses shoe and heat it up very hot like that, are you actually fitting the shoe by virtue of melting the heal into a good fit so it doesn't hurt his feet over time?🧡🧡🧡🧡

Thanks for this. I liked how much detail of the whole process that you showed. The horse is surprisingly patient.
WORK was had all around!!
Big, strong, heavy animal being patient.
Tough, enduring, fast, powerful man getting it done.
Extremely impressive, all!!

Well done. Nice work. I do love draft horses but my body just won't take working on them anymore. Thank you for sharing. Have a blessed day.
I have rarely seen a more dignified form of work....
What a huge powerful animal these draft horses are. Beautiful too.
They are a waste of time and money. A mule half the size will out work, eat less, and easier and cheaper to shoe. I hate shoeing them they are a pain.
Bravissimi....
Please !!Don't keep a nail in your mouth, it's very dangerous , when you accidentally coughing the nail it will go into the mouth

What a strong horse, much bigger than my country’s horses
This is because the horse in this video belongs to the Percheron breed. They are the largest and strongest of all horses.
Ton and a half horse + a 12" wide hoof + enough muscle power to bend a crow bar = a very dangerous trade.
What beautiful animals. Fifty thousand years in breeding.
That is a lot of work! These are big horses.
2000 lbs of maso

A professional work changing horse shoes welldone👍
In awe the size of these lads

Most farriers do this to protect their backs.
He's not doing one horse or a few of his own, it's his work. What do you think working without a stand would do to his back?
No padding to cushion the animals legs?
the horseshoe is good when the horse moves on the meadows, stepping on the asphalt becomes a sled
Oh right, I wonder why my horse kept sliding over asphalt then....not
He’s very strong.
