This review made me realize I have no freaking idea what's going on in this game.
I feel that and it doesn't make me want it either.
its just BoTW 2
Those are my feelings from the start, however, I doubt it would be considered good if it was just sandbox without essence.
I played a good portion of it and I have to say that has strongly exceeded my expectations
I saw it as ACG not trying to spoil anything. I am getting the game in two hours.
I love that they looked at how players were having fun with bugginess in BOTW and just doubled down on it.
They took the it's a feature meme literally and made it better XD.

So was he metaphorically saying the game "zelda" is treading water at the begining, or did he straight up get Links name wrong and say he's annoyed that the player character can't swim well at first?
zelda please clarify
ââ@@patrox428 I wondered that, too, but it seems like he's actually getting Link's name incorrect.
Edit: interesting. Looks like he edited it out.
@@googlewolly That's interesting, not a mistake I would expect ACG to make as he's so deep in the video game industry. Funny that he has since edited that part out. Ha I'm sure I would do the same ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ still a nice review that I enjoyed.
@@patrox428 lol Agreed. I was surprised. Anyway, like you said, still a good review.
Idk man. On the one hand I really loved BoTW. But on the other hand⊠I donât know that I feel like revisiting that world.
I donât know how to explain it but I sort of wanted⊠a different Zelda experience I guess.
But maybe Iâm just missing the nostalgia of OoT and Majoraâs Mask. In those games I appreciated talking to the characters and the dungeons.
In BoTW (and from the initial looks of it this game)⊠I didnât spend much time at all talking to npcs and worldbuilding details, nor doing much dungeon diving. It was just exploring the open world like 95% of the time.
Thatâs not⊠bad per se⊠just a very different style of game. Or so it feels to me anyways.
For the next game they can expand upon by adding the sailing the vast ocean from wind waker and time travel from ocarina of time.
That's a good idea, add a few time travel paradoxes for puzzles and dungeons.
@@docArr666 They have that in some of the shrines
I'd personally prefer a different, maybe a more linear take on Zelda. I hope they don't start cranking out 5 games based on the same framework.
Very odd idea, the ocean from windwaker is dried up so thats not possible. However its likely we could explore the sea in the current time
@@flyingplantwhale545 Trilogy is still acceptable for me, after that better start fresh from scratch
I wasn't as crazy about BotW as everyone else, but I have been having a blast with TotK. None of the major issues I had were exactly fixed, but there's just so much more and I'm in love with the new abilities and freedom/creativity they allow. I might even beat this one!
That's great because I personally thought BotW was insanely overrated and ultimately a generic and monotonous open world game with no sense of uniqueness.
There are about to be dozens of open world, survival, crafting games with a terribly implemented fuse system. Can't wait to see everyone try to mimic this feature and fall flat! Great review!
I just bought a Switch to play Metroid Prime Remastered and thought: "Lets just see if Zelda is as great as they say". It's ok but once you've played Horizon Forbidden West...30 FPS just make my eyes water. Metroid is amazing though.
If you think BOTW at 30 FPS was bad you should try playing Pokémon Scarlet/Violet.
@@rupe82 Modern Pokémon games are also in general just bad games. Even if they ran at 120fps and they still would still be boring and crap.
That relationship between action and inaction makes such a difference for my immersion level. Especially with open world games, the marketing tends to oversell the quality there. But with BotW, I found it delivered. Glad to hear the sequel continues that.
It's crazy to me how much hand wringing there is over Starfield having a 60fps mode, when Zelda is a 900p 30fps game that dives to 20fps every single time you use certain abilities and we're happy to call it a masterpiece. That's the difference between Xbox first party and everyone else. Kudos to ACG for being one of the few reviewers to even point out the technical issues.
It's never been about fps or graphics. It's always about the gameplay. This one is a masterpiece.
I was worried before the game came out but now that I've played it for an entire weekend I'm blown away by how fun the game is and it gives me a similar sense of adventure that the first game did but in new and fun ways.
The journey to the first main dungeon was one of the most thrilling things I've ever done in a video game.
Totally agree, it gave me the chills.
I am excited for the game but honestly Iâm even more excited to see my kids play it this summer. Iâm a divorced dad that lives on the otherside of the US so our biggest bonding mechanism are video games.

The game should have been called Link. Or Link should have been called Zelda.
Even with the newest patch the game does have some tech issues including some raw ass popup and some insanely low textures but that doesn't stop the actual art design from being amazing. It does, especially at this resolution, look really rough in some places but the same of grandeur is impossible to argue with .

Yeah this is how I feel about it as well. Been playing for a few hours and the game is amazing, but if only it wasn't 720p upscaled to 1080p and dropping 30fps the game would indeed be a 15/10. I guess it will just have to be a 10/10 đ

I miss the Zelda games that had amazing soundtracks, unique temples that were basically big puzzle-boxes, and weapons that don't break.
Same đą
The soundtrack is fantastic though! It also literally has unique temples - all of which have great fully orchestrated themes. Just finished the lightning temple and it's a huge 7 story puzzle box set inside a pyramid.
@roro213 That sounds great , I liked botw but I much prefer other games in the series.
If I wasn't broke I would buy TOTK
They......they added temples mate.................
And what on earth do you MEAN YOU MISS THE GAMES WITH A GOOD SOUNDTRACK?!?!?!?
@Lord Qwerty the Pyromancer To me it means a soundtrack that I can instantly think of memorable songs. Botw didn't have that , it almost didn't have music in general outside of bosses and towns.
I lost it at 10:59 with the rain sound effects đđđ
After finally having beaten it and putting about ~45 hours into it - I feel like I can confidently say this is a much better game that Breath of the Wild. However, I'm left wanting pretty much the same things I wanted after I beat BOTW and, as you mentioned, it loses that surprise factor that BOTW had when it was the first open world Zelda game. BOTW was such a new experience that even if it wasn't really packed with things to do, I still considered it a near perfect attempt at the first open world Zelda game and I was excited to see how they would build on this. With TOTK, it feels refined but I feel let down at how much they didn't improve. I'm still left wanting more enemy variety, I'm still left wanting better "dungeon" designs, I'm still left wanting at least a slightly more interesting combat system (the flurry timing in this game was off to me), and I'm still wanting a Zelda open world that is as interesting as it is vast. Good lord the Sky Islands are sparse and boring and the Depths feel repetitive and boring after a while. And above all, I'm wanting Nintendo to move on from the Switch immediately. The frame rate dips, low resolution, etc. is starting to get less easy to forgive after getting used to the performance of a PS5. In the end, if someone hasn't played either I would 100% recommend Tears of the Kingdom over Breath of the Wild at this point. If someone didn't really like BOTW, I just don't think this gives you much of a reason to change your mind unless you were really begging for a sandbox of toys where you can create whatever it is you want to help fight enemies or traverse landscapes. While this part of TOTK is really awesome, none of it is necessary to play or beat this game and is therefore just not critical to the enjoyment of the game for me.
Thanks for reviewing this I have 3 kids,a job and a crazy wife. not much time or money to play games anymore

@@Redstar19791979 I liked BotW, but I have no real interest in playing TotK at the moment. I totally didn't get the leaked version and totally didn't emulate it, and I absolutely wasn't just kinda bored by it. I'm sure I'll thoroughly enjoy TotK eventually, but not for now. Elden Ring did a very similar kind of open world, and in my opinion, it did it a bit better.
Yeah I hear that. I'm glad the people who enjoy this new era of zelda have their cake. But honestly the crafting system is really a turn off for me personally. Not what I'm looking for in my zelda experience. Glad I still have the classic games to play though, they're not going anywhere soon.

What about the environment? How does it differ from BotW? What about NPC quests? Are hearts and Korok seeds the big exploration draws in the game?
Been noticing this in alot of reviews for TOTK, it seems like they are trying REALLY hard to avoid calling the game for what it is, that this game is just a 70 dlc, guessing they want to avoid a nintendo blacklist.

Already a Patreon, but it's great seeing you review Nintendo titles as well (I know you've done a few in the past, namely Rabbids titles which I picked up based on your recommendation!). Zelda doesn't need much of an explanation but you've gone above and beyond in this review once again. Thanks Karak and look forward to hearing everyone's opinions of this title in the next podcast.
Hello mate, love your content. Are you actually playing at a framerate higher than 30fps, or is it just CZcams making it 60fps?
It was funny how people said it would have a more symphonic soundtrack but the music was even more downplayed than in BotW. In the first game when you came upon a sleeping Hinox there would be this sort of bumbly jazz music and it felt really cool and overall the music was good I thought in the original. But this one seems to have chosen to downplay the music even more to the point to the point to where it's almost something that you can ignore entirely.
Nintendo's next console needs to be better. Otherwise, it's just holding back their first-party games to the fullest potential.
Agreed, and unfortunately for this release, it's long overdue. 30fps caps with 20fps dips common in complex scenes and at times, in towns, is kind of unacceptable these days.
From what I've seen, TotK runs great at 30fps most of the time (Digital Foundry), and the controls are uber responsive, which is imperative for a good experience, but everything from the visual quality to the framerate and other limitations just seems like such an unnecessary, missed opportunity, when we know that Nintendo could release a new Switch with similar specs to the Steam Deck, or better. Although the price point may increase for that.
If not another Switch, then it's time to start releasing first-party titles on other systems finally.
How tho? Itâs not like Nintendo isnât releasing complete bangers. The graphics would be better but based on the reviews thatâs it. The gameplay and creativity isnât being held back at all
@@Jhoncena22 The game itself is obviously fun as hell and more ambitious than most RPGs for gameplay. Even the art style as-is is absolutely fantastic. But could you imagine the game looking more like Horizon Forbidden West on a modern gaming system? It would only increase the appeal.
But to have it looking like a late PS3 game topping at 30fps is just a shame when Nintendo probably has the funding and chops to make a 60fps capable system with better visuals for this game, to boot.
I agree with you but the underpowered hardware also makes the dev teams be creative with where they put their priorities and resources. So many devs these days throw in so much bloat with little payoff for the player. They have all graphics with less gameplay mechanics, creativity and more bugs/performance issues.
Just starting out but I'm always so amazed how the world just guides me to where I'm meant to be...but also looking so organic and lived in.

First off. Excellent review. I love your channel and everything you do for the gaming community.
Second, I'm probably going to receive some backlash for this but I'm genuinely curious. I did not enjoy Breath of the Wild and have attempted multiple times to return to experience it, but always end up falling away. It was such a significant shift away from what Zelda had created with the carefully-crafted Dungeons and focusing more heavily on being a large open World adventure game with the world being the primary focal point, with smaller micro dungeons akin to power based puzzles spread across a world, rather than compacted into a cohesive central whole.
This made it one of, if not the best adventure games ever made, but it didn't feel like Zelda to me. At least not what I had been loving about Zelda games since my early childhood and what I continued to return to Zelda games for.
For those who maybe didn't jive with breath of the wild for what it originally was and what it changed from the original Zelda formula, does TotK make enough changes to give it another shot, or will the same sentiments still be experienced?
I'm not trying to try to be edgy with not liking one of the best games of all time, but it never really hit what I looked for from the Zelda series. And this may be too early to ask this question to the masses given that it just released but am interested in the sentiment after some runtime.

I've only had a few hours so far but find I'm spending more time flicking through menus and selecting powers than actually playing the game. Perhaps when it's more engrained it will become more fluid but for now I can't help but feel slightly dissapointed. I was hoping that this time around they would introduced power up items in the style of the pegasus boots or power glove so that the power ups become more intuitive rather than selecting it to use it. Like the fact I have to select the ascend move rather than just look up and it I can use it rather than just press the button. Seems like extra steps for no reason. I'm gonna play through it all and perhaps will enjoy it once I'm a few more hours in but being stuck on the side of a cold lake and having to chop trees down with my dwindling supply of weapons breaking just to get back across is rather annoying. I had to restart from a previous save. This being said I love breath of the wild so maybe It's just not clicking yet. Keep up the great reviews.
another solid ACG review!! i must admit, to my UTTER SHAME, i have never played BOTW :( i have vicariously lived through youtube videos & streams though! happy to hear this sequel lives up to expectations!!!
I'm 200 hours in and I still feel like I'm finding out new things every ten minutes. Breath of the wild felt endless to me but after playing tears, it feels empty. I'm constantly thinking, how did I ever play without this feature or this thing. Honestly, one of the best games I've ever played since I started gaming at 2.
You stole the game and are proud of it.

Agree with 99% of what you said, aside from the soundtrack. Yes a lot of the music feels ultra-tailored to specific events, but I think some of the bigger boss fight orchestral pieces are bombastic and extremely satisfying. The first time you fight a gleeok is a serious treat just from the massive war-like song that plays. Plus all of the more subtle music cues feel perfectly appropriate almost like exploring through a Ghibli movie's landscape, adding some sense of comfort to the exploration.
The creation destruction thing is a problem of load distance that they decided to do because of the limited power of the switch
Yeah, the lack of system RAM on the Switch is very apparent in Tears of the Kingdom. I am enjoying it much more than BotW, Tears addressed most of the things I didnât care for in the first game. Weapon durability is still a terrible mechanic though, but fusing makes that a little less painful.
I was looking forward to your review the most. Your work is always top notch. Thanks for putting your audience first when you review.
