The Primitive Baptist y'all are talking about sounds like what we call Hard Shell Baptist here in SC. I wonder if there is a difference between them. Thank you for the great history videos and all the hard work.
Upatoi Primitive Baptist had music. We were Progressive Primitive Baptist so we had a piano and at times visitors would bring in other instruments, guitars, etc.. The old brown hymnals had the shaped notes and they even had someone come through that taught shaped heart note singing. The ceiling is underneath the original ceiling. They did not remove it when it was remodeled. When this church was built, they numbered each board so it could be put back together as it was originally. This is why they did not remove any of the old and just covered it. The pulpit was also moved and most of it is original. We as children were not allowed to go into the pulpit area. We had a tall preacher and they had to add the additional height on the pulpit. The floor had some remodeling when it "rottened" out. There is a lot of "heart pine" in the church. There was a spring behind the church that was used as a baptismal pool for many years and so was the "privy". Once Olive Branch UMC built a bathroom, they would let us go over and use it so the privy did not get used anymore. The Baptismal pool grew up so, other churches would let us use their baptismal. Thank you for sharing this!!!!! So many great memories!!! (Oh, the dances Joy was talking about were held at The Community House but members of both churches were always there.) The Methodist had services Second and Forth Sunday and Upatoi had services on Third Sunday. Everyone went to Sunday School at the Methodist church and then came over to Upatoi on Third Sunday. When visitors came to any function at either church, they did not know who was Progressive Primitive Baptist or Methodist! So thankful to have grown up in such a special time when neighbors cared and were always there for each other in good and bad times. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Bringing Joy and Dan out to this church added so much to the tour. The two of them are so knowledgeable. Robert, this video shows how much history can be found under a building. Thanks for another great adventure.
Another great video. The thing that touched me the most was the respect Mr Dan has, as is shown by him removing his hat inside the church. Little gestures like that are not gone unnoticed. Such a gentleman and hard to find someone like him these days. Robert...thank you for the love and respect that you always have for these places too, and for the time, effort and energy that you spend in bringing them to us. You are very much appreciated.
Thank you Robert, Dan and Joy for allowing us to see the inside of this awesome church building. It really breaks my heart that so many churches sets vacant with no more services being held in them.
It was so nice to see Dan remove his hat inside the church. I am almost 80 and went to a Primitive Baptist church as a girl, we did not have pews, we had wooden backless benches, there were two doors to enter the church one for men and one for the women. Men sat on one side a nd women and children on the other side. Primitive Baptist believe much as the Calvinist . Those seats from the theater would have been too ornate back when I was a girl.
When Dan walked out the church door I believe the back of the church and all the colors of the leaves was so beautiful I grew up and still live in the big dirty city of New York mostly dirly . At 64 I would love to live my last years out there in Georgia I used to go vacation to my aunt's in Springfield mass . She live in the woods in a trailer before her and my uncle built there house which was beautiful I loved the quiet and at night it was pitch black when you turned the lights off.it was Gods country .God bless you all
I could almost hear the singing in that church! What an incredible story about Joy's ancestry! I'm sure she has a whole gallery of Angels cheering for her as she shares their stories. Add Dan with his historical perspectives and Robert with his experience dating old structures and we have The Three Amigos of keeping history alive! Fascinating! Merry Christmas y'all! Blessings!
I would love to have visited there on a Sunday in the early years and hear the Good Ole Preaching, Praying, Shouting and Singing! One would have felt the presence of The Lord as the Holy Spirit moved through the congregation! Thanks Dan, Joy and Robert for the awesome video!
You brought this old church back to life by telling its story and sharing its history. I'm so glad to not see vandalism or graffiti. Leaving history 'as is'. I love these old churches.
I really enjoyed seeing this old church. I was raised Pentecostal. I do not like it when churches removed the pews and put in this theater style seating, because, every time you stand up you have to place your bible or purse etc on the ground. Old fashioned pews were a place where I felt my Bible had a spot that would not be knocked over to the ground.. :) also if you were raised in church, you probably fell asleep as a baby on a pew, no babies in this church, you would not put them on the floor. I love learning the history from ya all..
Really liked this one it had a real❤ feel to it. The spirit still rises in old places of worship I believe. Interesting history, interesting building those old timbers wow. 😊 You did good. Love from KY. Oh, we had our Christmas snow yesterday, it's supposed to warm up again and rain on the day..it was pretty while it lasted got about an inch here in Central KY,cold today with sun. 🎄🎄🎄🎀🎀🎀
I love to see and visit old church buildings! I think of the many people who worshiped in the building over the decades. No doubt some very important things happened in these old houses of God: weddings, funerals, revivals and regular services, of course. The church was the center of the community many years ago. People congregated there in some cases not only to worship but to fellowship and in some cases the church building would double as a school house. As is often said about these old, historical buildings: "If only the walls could talk!"
That piano is exactly like the one I had growing up. Mine was made in 1898. My dad gave it to me on my 6th birthday in 1958. The history of the churches and their behaviors is very interesting.
My great grandfather was from Georgia. From Washington Co. My Granny was a Baptist as was my Mom. I have never heard of Primitive Baptist. My Grandma, (my Dad's Mom) was Church of Christ. They did not believe in musical instruments and still don't to this day. I remember going with my Grandma to The Church of Christ and the men would sing one part and the women another part, which I believe they still continue to do today. I'm 70 years old and the youngest of 5. Here in Oklahoma, First Baptist is the most prominent Baptist. Interesting to hear of Primitive Baptist.
Ya know Mr. Robert, you could literally start a cultural archeology channel with the likes of Miss Joy and Mr. Dan documenting the lifestyle and culture of that whole region. Sacred harp, shape notes, was how Hank Williams learned to sing the way he did. Even Rich Mullins, in his younger years took an interest and explored the technique and you could hear it in his vocals as well. I'm sure there are many others But these old structures, locales, practices, lifestyles, and historical figures are the shoulders our world is built upon today and we are losing that sense of place and appreciation for that which has come before. I know, that's what your channel(s) are all about. But is there anyone more dignified than Mr. Dan and more gracious than Miss Joy to provide so thorough and well researched background and how it relates to our world today than those two? Just a thought. I do have one request. I think you and Dan should go back to that house that you both so quickly departed but THIS time bring Miss Joy along and see if her presence settles the spirits so you two chickens can cluck about the house and what it is hiding. I have every confidence that her presence is what was missing from the first venture. Great content as always and that is coming from a fellow who used to live just off Victory Drive many, many moons ago...
I'll never say no to an Adventure outing with Robert and Dan but remember that scene in The Wizard Of Oz where the Cowardly Lion turns back from walking down the hall to see the Wizard saying, "I do believe in spooks! I do believe in spooks! I do, I do, I do, I do believe in spooks!" Whelp, that'd be me...
@@joyfisher2128 lol... I'd be willing to wager a dinner in Gatlinburg with y'all that the spooks would behave themselves if you were along JUST to make Dan and Robert look all the sillier! ;-)
How amazing this piece of history is. Enjoyed every moment of it. I too couldn’t get over the size of the boards by the pulpit. And seeing under the church was a great eye opener. beautiful old building and to have that history of your own family there, Joy is something to be porud of, to have this NOW also documented by Dan and Robert is awesome. What a great exploration of a church with so much history. I personally just love the old country churches. Thank you to all of you for this trip through history.
I honestly like the idea of chairs instead of pews. People really wouldn't have an excuse of falling asleep in those theatre chairs ha ha. Shaped notes are so weird. It throws piano players who aren't versed in the oldies ha ha.

Did anyone notice the man whispering in timestamp starting at 8:14? It is clear as daylight. I watch all your videos by the way.
Yes!
There was definitely something there.
I heard that too!
This time it wasn't the wind - I promise you that! But that's because I know we had two other fellows with us who were standing outside talking with Robert and Dan were filming ;)
@@joyfisher2128 Oh so you think it may have picked up on them talking outside? That sounded like someone whispering right next to him though. Thank you for responding.. Happy Holidays!
I'm always amazed that you don't see wild life on your adventures. Such as bears.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
i hope it is being maintained and preserved looks to be in good shape
Best content..very grateful thank you!
This was an amazing video! Thank you! Did you look at any copyright dates in older looking hymnals and bibles? I love how you explain ways to date a building. Is this considered a historical landmark? It should!
Merry Christmas to you all and a Happy New Year from across the pond 🇬🇧🇺🇲👍
well I see you ar e in my community!
Thanks!
Thank YOU!
The siding on the church looks like Masonite siding made of compressed hardwood chips and resin. I grew up in a house that had it
Probably made the church bigger
Merry Christmas
Where's the other Robert? I miss him ...
Contract negotiations
He needs a union. @@AdventuresIntoHistory
My dad is really good friends with Dell and Judy Myers. He has lunch with Dell every Friday. I will ask him about Judy and the Church and let y’all know!! :)
