    Thank you for sharing your experiences! I have been in the field for 5 years but being an RBT is tough job. I started in late January of this year and I was EXTREMELY overwhelmed for the first two weeks. Now I’m more comfortable but I still feel anxious...and today I had such a bad day at work that I felt like I didn’t provide the most for my clients, which makes me feel sad. I asked my BCBA for advice because I struggled with my client this afternoon and I’m so glad the BCBA knows the clients and was able to give feedback and make me recognize that I DID do my best (he supervised my session), and there will be good & bad days... and that’s OK!
    P.s. today I did cry on my way home lol

    I literally resigned on my first day , I got so much anxiety, my hearth was racing. I struggled, no body wanted to help me and expected me to know everything on the first day. Besides my commute to the clinic was 60-80 min driving.
    I somehow regret the decision because it was well payed, full time, and you got payed even if you had gaps in between your sessions.
    But I learned not to make decisions that quickly and try harder.

      RBT is a very high need field and you can take the experience to a lot of other jobs. Also maybe do some babysitting or work at a daycare to get more experience with kids. I've been a nanny, but moved to marry my husband and there aren't really nanny jobs here so I've been date night babysitting and working in daycares. Now, I'm looking at maybe being an RBT. The daycare pay is dreadful, but I've learned a lot doing it. Also, one of the kids I babysit is autistic. While I haven't been an RBT yet, I feel more prepared to do it after watching 6 one year olds for 8 hours minus lunch.

    As an RBT for over a year & a few months now I can honestly say that I debated if this job was for me for literally half a year.
    I love my job now- but I didn’t always.
    It took ME personally so much time to learn how to run programs and learn strategies&interventions to pass competencies as well as really figure out my kiddos. I think the most challenging ‘thing’ for me was to find a good balance with being fun (because that makes session so much easier) and being stern and serious about programs at the same time.
    This job is stressful, fun, rewarding, challenging and you never stop learning. Regardless of who you’re client is just remember, the outcome of your session is dependent on the RBT’s attitude, behavior, and interventions. Some tips I would tell a new RBT would be to 1) have tough skin- don’t get too emotional it’s rough and this position takes a lot of time to get used to (it took me many months before feeling like I REALLY got it down) 2) Stick it out for a minimum 6 months then make your decision to stay or leave 3) BE FUN and learn to have a poker face because the kiddos will pick up on your energy 4) Find preferred stimuli (toys, activities) that is highly motivating 5) Use antecedent strategies to decrease problem behaviors

      I’m about to start my second week of training and I’ve already had breakdowns. I still don’t know how to feel about it all... It’s so much, too much, information to take in. My summer sessions were nothing compared to this. I want to stick out 6 months and then decide but... idk if I’ll make it that long. I don’t even know if I’ll pass the competency assessment and RBT exam... I don’t want to think negatively. I’m trying to stay positive but it’s easier said than done. Everyone had been kind and my trainer has been good! I’ve been offered support but idk... I feel so out of place. I can’t picture myself being an RBT and conducting session... I freak out just picturing it. I keep telling myself once things are a bit more hands on, I’ll understand it all a bit more but idk... I feel sick to my stomach thinking about tomorrow. I really want this to work out because it can offer me so much experience and skills and look great on my resume. Not to mention all the good I’d be doing for these kids. But I almost feel they deserve someone more mentally stable and experienced

      @@klarissadamon14 I understand your anxiety, frustrations, and self-doubt.
      There are some people who naturally just get it right off the back, but I’ll tell you…most don’t. It takes time, you can read all the materials and think you understand it, but you won’t get it get it until you’re actually in the field figuring it out. It’s hard to take information in and put your all when your mind is racing, the info won’t absorb right. Don’t worry so much about the exam and comp assessment, I believe you are able to take it multiple times. I had a coworker who failed over 4+ times but most of my colleagues passed the first time. I think you will be fine try not to stress out too much overthinking kills everything (trust I was that person to, actually still am). Just like anything else, it takes time and practice. Hey there, I have a question. You said "have a tough skin - don't get too emotional, it's rough". I was wondering what you mean by this? What occurs in the job that would be hard for people to adapt to at first?

    • @marissamontalbo1996
      @marissamontalbo1996 Před rokem +4

      @@ilovequiktrip3110 Well, behaviors are challenging in general so you could be dealing with physical aggression, pushing of buttons from client, etc. So having tough skin meaning to stay strong and not take things personally. Kids have called me fat stupid, and everything in between. As well has hitting, spitting, possibly even toileting when they’re in problem behavior. So much to list honestly.

      What would they do as a caregiver if you legit can’t make it 45 minutes 😳 am I misunderstanding what they do because in the field is usual at home services which are 45-90 minutes (not typical for over 50) so how the heck could you not know severe autism if that’s your career? It’s this stuff that terrifies me as a parent of a 3rd level autistic child… being a behavioral therapist we are suppose to find the match we love and if we feel like this another form of social work / therapy is needed in my opinion.. you should love the job and be pumped and ready for the short time you are engaged with the client. If a kid punches you or hurts you then yea step away go breath but otherwise this is autism 😳 your the ones there to stop these behaviors, help the family learn to adapt and the child to learn to manage things better.. so im so confused I hope I am misunderstanding this video I do not mean any disrespect but the way it sounds to me is pretty horrible

      @CharitysClarity I haven't watched the video yet. Going through the comments first. I start my job as an RBT in two weeks. My background is as a CNA mostly Austim. Different other forms of IDD and memory care (dementia/alzeheimers). It's a very hostile field and you get, hit punched, kicked and bit a whole lot. I love what I do. I love each and every resident/client I ever had or will have. However, it does not mean that I nor anyone else in the Healthcare field has to enjoy being hit. Yes, the people we're dealing with has autism or dementia and we're compassionate and empathetic and show as much love as we can, but understand we're also human as well. As far as being able to control behavior. We don't control it. We can try to redirect them or use positive reenforcement. Some tho you have to give them space. May I ask you a question? What do you do for a living? Do you love every single aspect of what you do? I'm sure that you don't like.

    Just wanna comment because I feel like alot of comments are saying they are scared or nervous! Take it day by day... It gets easier i promise but also each company is totally different, there are some true gems out there that care so much about helping and giving you all the tools to help your kiddos succeed and that honestly starts with us! My company had 2 weeks of training prior to taking the exam, mock session days where our RBT trainer would exhibit some of or more common BIP's and walk us through how to implement them... ASK QUESTIONS you may feel silly or think you should know this but each kiddo is so different which changes things going from one session to the next, the more you know the better you can help!! But yes as incredible and rewarding as this feild is ... I wont say its perfect everyday some days you will cry in your car or have to call support in to take a moment bc your kiddo is having an off day because its not how they typically react... but I am blessed to be able to help these kiddos and wouldnt change it!

Klarissa, the fact that you are so concerned about doing a great job and taking in all the information is already a good sign. It means you want to do well in this field. Our advice would be to set boundaries, your mental health is so important. This field can be demanding so maybe working less hours as you learn everything. Also asking to be taught in ways that help you learn easily is important too. Being that you are the first person they are trying this training with, be honest about how you feel. Trainings are meant to help make your job easier and provide you with the skills you need, not make you feel so overwhelmed you would rather quit. Be transparent. Set boundaries. Self-care. Another rbt came over and helped me with her and I just wanted to break down and cry because I felt like I wasn’t doing what I needed to do to help her.

    This terrifying as a parent!! I interviewed 3 companies and two of the companies just repeated "ABA is ABA. Services from any technician/company is the same. Our RBTs/BTs are trained. They go through 40 hrs of training." They sounded so defensive when I tried to ask specific questions about how the quality of services was ensured.

    • @allaboutaba1875

      Thank you for watching! We absolutely understand how you would feel this is terrifying. Unfortunately, like in every field there are some places that do things correctly and others who do not. Our experiences are not a representation of the field of ABA as a whole but simply a small part. We would like to provide you with some questions that may help when you are looking for an ABA company to ensure they have properly trained their staff: 1. How often are supervisions conducted? 2 times per month is the bare minimum, ideally weekly supervision would be great 2. How is the RBTs performance evaluated? Performance should be monitored every supervision with specific feedback provided and opportunities to correct and improve performance 3. How often will YOU the parent receive updates on progress? Access to every session note would be ideal but common practice is monthly reports of your child's progress 4. Is parent training conducted? Most insurances require family training but it is best practice for ANY company to provide resources and training on the interventions being used to the family. Again, these experiences shine a light on a small part of our field that exists but just like doctors, nurses, lawyers and any other profession your first day is not your best day nor the day you know exactly what to do or when to apply your training. If a company is getting defensive when answering your questions that is a red flag and not a place that needs your business.

      Girl, same! I’m also a concerned parent doing the research to learn what I’m about to get myself into with ABA therapy. I also felt the same way when doing my due diligence. It sounds like the term “therapist” is thrown around loosely and this field appears to be highly unregulated for how much these services cost. It’s annoying and frustrating.

We worked as a team there and all of my co workers never got frustrated if I had questions. Before I left, it got to the point where some of my regular kids would run up to me and ask me if they were on my schedule for the day. I’m just hoping this new place is good as the last. I’m honestly more so nervous about data collection, because this new clinic uses a different more complicated software.

    Why does it seem like training is very little to none? I was with a company a week and quit for a multitude of reasons. Unprofessional was one of those reasons and when I spoke up to ask questions or give suggestions, they shot me down. That was 8 months ago. I didn't have my certification either so I was lostttt when they had me with two children....but the reason I'm watching this video is because I've been thinking of going back, obviously applying to a different company! I'm getting a lot of signs that I'm there or close. I love it but the amount of aggression and length of sessions etc is getting itchy for me. I had to approach BCBA of very aggressive attention client and explain that poker face while being beaten is something I pride my ability to do but with current case load I am realizing this can throw me over the edge and lead to defeat burn out. I've just started researching this career, and it interests me because I am very passionate about two things, kids, and neuro divergence! It bothers me that society tells neurodivergent people how to behave, rather than teaching society how to embrace everybody's differences. My brother is on the spectrum, and I've noticed that there isn't as much emotional support for the parents as there should be. Is this a job for the RBT? To be the bridge between parent-to-child or other caregivers? I've seen a lot of big-worded videos that don't explain the type of person that would work well with this population. I am a great listener, creative problem solver, and holistic thinker. I advocate for every child I meet but understand the importance of working with a community. I think behaviors are the tip of the iceberg when it comes to humans and I hardly take those personally when it comes to kids. Hoping someone in this field could give me some feedback!

    I resign the aba or behavior health job because it’s super stressful and emotionally training. I’ll get intense anxiety, fatigue and nausea going to session a lot where I’m worried if session will go bad or not. As someone on the autism spectrum who has social anxiety, the job was intense where it was required to be fully engaged and active with clients however I was very mute and quiet working with a client during session since I was socially anxious and it’s worst when the parents stare at me while doing session which triggers my social anxiety. I also got remove from two cases where the director told me that parents were complaining about me that I’m low engaged with the client so I felt like I was in danger and stress even more so this lead me to leave the company. I tried talking to the supervisor about my anxiety and everything. They ask me what they can do to help which the worst. They ask me what they can do to help which the worst part is I don’t know what I want and how they can help me. I felt like I was in a large trap and this lead me to leave the company because I felt unappreciated and scared as hell working.

    I have 7 months in home ABA experience. I'm not an RBT. RBT is a Certified Technician who has to take a test and has to renew their license annually. Right now I am considered a BI, or BT. When I get a new case the BCBA or the BCaBA is present on the first session either in person, or by zoom call. I want to get my feet wet and work longer, before I take my RBT license test. I have worked with problem children they seem to behave better when their parent is around. Beware if you work with the school districts, because the kids behave differently without the parent to act as a buffer. I have; had my hair pulled, been kicked, bitten and scratched. In-home never.

      It varies between states. To become a bcba you shouldn’t necessarily need experience as an RBT. You usually need a graduate degree in a related field and supervised field hours during/after the program. It would be best to reach out to the licensing board in your state, or a practicing bcba to clarify the requirements for your area.

      @AvianaBasil Před rokem +1

      It’s normal to get sick, unfortunately it happened to me monthly for years from being an RBT. It’s different for everyone per immune system. However; I found that if you start to feel like you’re coming down with something, take elderberry syrup or Sambucol from the drug store, its kind of pricey but if taken early enough, and as directed, it will shorten the severity and length of a cold, flu or virus.
      You can reduce your chances of getting sick by disinfecting surfaces and items your client touches. I’ve become kinda ocd with it tbh, because we don’t get sick days or PTO here. Spraying and wiping down tablets, toys, materials your client touches regularly and your cell phone, timer, whatever you interact with.
      Depending on where your work, use what they allow in your facility. I personally carry a small spray bottle of 91% rubbing alcohol, (I bring my own to school), I disinfect surfaces and items as often as possible throughout the day. Especially tablets, cell phone, anything shared basically. If the school or clinic has Lysol spray, I use that for large surfaces like desks, chairs, and reserve my rubbing alcohol for electronics like my phone, tablet, clients tablet etc, spray down and wipe off with clean paper towels. Not much you can do outside of that.
      Washing/sanitizing your hands as often as possible and hands of client before they eat, after going to the bathroom, whenever reasonable & often as possible according to the schedule.
      Obviously do your best to eat healthy, get enough sleep and exercise. Boost your immune system, teach cleanliness to your clients if and when appropriate. And after all this, you may still get sick but it should make some difference.

    Hi, great video! I am not employed at this time but was wondering how the competency assessment works if you do not work at a company...I have no undergrad as I have been in property management. I am looking to take rbt classes online but how do I go about getting a bacb to supervise me?

      You can find BCBAs or BCaBAs through the BACB's website (www.bacb.com) that live near you to run a competency assessment with you. You may have to pay for this service if you don't work at their company. Alternatively, you could get hired at a company and then have them do your competency before you start actually working with the clients there.

    I'm in school, haven't graduated yet but am looking to get the Cert to get started in the field.
    Is this a good idea? Do you think that not having my complete college education will make things MUCH harder?

      There are plenty of others who have gotten their RBT certification with only a high school diploma. As long as you put in the work to learn the material and practice, then it shouldn't be too hard. Good luck!! :)

    Would you say an in clinic setting is better than in home for new rbts?

      @allaboutaba1875  Před 3 lety +1

      I can see how in-clinic allows for more support for a new RBT since in a clinic you have support from coworkers and your supervisor is readily available. Versus in home you are on your own most of the time.
