All this talk about the field goal call sucking & about Ward not being THE BEST need to understand this... I was 15 & we were losing to ND so badly that my Dad decided we should leave for a road trip early & just listen to the rest of the game on the radio. John Ward's "It's Good! ...It's NO Good! It's NO Good!" made my father swerve across 4 lanes of traffic & then pull off on the side of the interstate where we celebrated. That my friends, is just one of the MANY reasons John Ward is a Legend.

As a Tennessee fan for some 45 plus years, we love the Notre Dame series. The Notre Dame fans are among the very best who visit Knoxville. They are knowledgeable and great fun. One of the best game I have ever seen was the 1990 game in Knoxville when ND won by 5. We had a wide receiver open in the back of the end zone, and a ND D-back closed and got a finger tip on the ball to preserve the win for ND. Then, the following year, we get this gem in South Bend.

As a lifelong Irish fan I have been in the audience for two games in South Bend against Tennessee. This one (my heart still hurts a bit) and then in 2005.
You have an amazing, classy fan base as well and I hope this series can be revived some day.
I remember watching that 1990 game as well. Rocket Ismail on a toss out of a full house backfield went about 40 yards to put the Irish up for good. But Tennessee scored, and then recovered an onside kick. Great game.

The other two being beating the Bear in his last visit to Neyland to break the streak at that time and putting a beatdown on "The U" in the Sugar Bowl in '86.

Was there with the UT band. We were actually sitting inside the little wall, with our feet in snow that had been scraped off the field. The FG attempt was at the opposite side of the field from where we were. The angle we could (barely) see looked like it went in, and the ND fans went nuts, thinking it was good. Then we noticed a small patch of orange, directly behind the goalposts going even more nuts. It had bounced off Jeremy Lincoln's butt and went wide. 🤣🤣

I arrived in Cookeville and saw the blocked field goal and was trying to change clothes and head up to the airport in Knoxville but I was talked out of it.

Lincoln got into the backfield so fast he overran the play, but the ball got just enough of his butt to throw the kick off-line.

I’ve beena diehard Tennessee since I was 12 years old. My first game was UT beating Auburn in the rain in Knoxville. Cobb’s 70+ yard TD run was right towards where we were sitting. This game however is my favorite. ND was a juggernaut in those days and for UT to go to S.Bend and come from behind was just simply awesome. Lou Holtz lost that game for ND though. For some crazy reason he got away from running the football, which they had done right down UT’s throats the first half, and started throwing. Anyway, one of the greatest wins in UT history and my favorite game ever.

@mababi33333 I was 19 when this was played. What I remember about it was the field goal we blocked right before halftime. When we got the touchdown, even though UT was still down 17 at the half, I somehow knew we were going to win. On the last ND field goal try, Jeremy Lincoln got in there so quick he nearly overran the kick. It went wide right only because it grazed his butt as Lincoln went past.
Also, probably the greatest game in the UT career of future Arenaball legend Andy Kelly.

@alysonbrown13 I would be very happy to pass along your best wishes to Lane, when we do wreck the Trojans. And thanks for the kind words about us. I've heard some varying opinions about our fans, but I know damn well that we have nothing but respect for the SEC. They're the best conference and the best teams in the country. And good luck to the Big O....

That has got to be the greatest game in UT history. ND was amazing then, and no one gave UT a chance to win that one. A minor technicality, but that screen pass works because Carl Pickens takes his defender out the back of the endzone. I wish receivers today, as a whole, would work as hard without the ball as they do with it, like Pickens did on that play.

Why did our field goal unit have to ruin this game for us?
Congratulations, Tennessee. Amazing comeback, made even more amazing by the fact that it was in South Bend during ND Stadium's feared days.

I look forward to the day when Notre Dame Stadium and Neyland are both feared again. Notre Dame is close, just can't get a handle on Kelley - it may be with academics and all, he is doing as well as anyone could. The Irish are Top 10 again at least.

Tennessee's FG Block team was responsible for two blocked FGs, a touchdown, and knocking Craig Hentrich out of the game.
