  • An in-depth look at the all-new Abu Garcia 7000 Catfish Special reel.
Abu Garcia catfish reels have been the gold standard for catfish anglers for decades with the "gold standard" being the 6500 series reel. There are more catfish anglers using 6500C3 reels for catfish than any other fishing reel. The 7000 Catfish Special Reel is a larger reel than the popular 6500 series reel. The 7000 series reels have been in production for many years but the all-new Catfish Special reel has received a facelift like the other popular catfish reels.
This week we take an in-depth look at the Abu Garcia 7000 Catfish Special and its features and compare it to the popular 6500 series catfish reels so you can decide what the best option is for you!

The line guard is like $3. It would have to be wore down to a brass color though. If you have too much grease in in the worm they will do that. I don’t know why but they ship them with way too much grease. If all that’s good it’s either the pawl or cog wheel. You could replace both for less than $10 shipped. I have so many Abus I keep parts around all the time. You can get a ceramic pawl for a little more.

Abu reels are used by more catfish anglers than any other reel. Yes I’m sponsored by them but I’ve been using them exclusively long before that. There’s an in depth article on my site about reels and I cover extensively why I don’t use cheap reels and why I don’t suggest others buy them a well. In the end my review is the same for all, you can buy a rebranded Chinese reel, it’s going to break because all reels break and when you need parts you won’t be able to get them so you’ll buy a new reel and won’t have saved any money. I can drive 30 minutes and get a part for any abu reel of any age without issue. The parts will always be available. I cover what I use and this is what I use. Pay now or pay later but either way you’re going to pay. I don’t fish with chicken and jello either. Just saying.

I like big reels. I fish the Mississippi river from the bank .l use Penn squall 30s & Penn senators and shamino TlDs 25s on 14 Ft heavy Meathunters RDS .
Simply because I know what's in the big river ,
And I don't have a boat , But still need to get way out there and be able to fight those real big ones If they deside to go the other way.
Maybe a little over kill , but don't have to worry about lusing the fish of a life time.
