What is your favorite film stock?
you
fuji pro400h
Fomapan 100 because it’s mad cheap haha
For everyday shooting, I like Kodak colorplus 200. But, is it me or has film prices shot up? I’m back to shooting film after a year and half hiatus and one roll of colorplus 200 is ~$6-8. I used to get a roll for $2.99. Cheers bro, from the Bay as well.
By sheer number of rolls shot, it's HP5 Plus. So versatile and pretty economical as well compared to Tri-X. For general purpose cheap color film I like Fuji C200, it seems more consistent in daylight and overcast conditions than Kodak but if you're gonna be shooting sunsets then definitely go for the Kodak Gold.
I appreciate how you use your own words and analogies rather than regurgitate the same technical notes that other reviews often contain. Makes it more accessible. Great video! I’m also a fan of Gold 200, and Fuji Superia 400
yeah I'm very much "me" haha
That Lomography has the special vintage look, so beautiful.
Having grown up with analogic cameras and turning into a bnw lover, I totally agree with you that it's completely different taking pictures with digital cameras and converting raw pics into bnw. The attitude when taking a bnw photograph is unique. For this reason, I've returned to my old Nikon analogic camera. And even if you have to wait for the results, I'm feeling so good with this "nostalgic" way of capture images.
Thanks for the video! I recently just got into film photography and this is so helpful! I saw film comparisons and the first one that I really love is Ektar 100, quite surprised not a lot of people are into it?! The results are so lovely!
2024 and I just picked up my first film camera (Olympus OM-2N) for a steal and this video was very informative to which film I should start practicing in. Thank you!
Thank you Chris, very helpful video 👏🏼
Thank you for this! Love your dialogue! I’m a beginner at shooting film. I shoot with a d700 and I just picked up a never used F3. Your vid gives me a good idea where to start:) cheers!
Great Video !! I'm dipping my toes back into Film. This is a good start. I'll have to visit Brooklyn and test these out !
Totally agree with shooting black and white film, your approach is much different and you are almost in another realm when it comes to composing. I've printed color film in black and white in my darkroom and never cared for the results. This is a discussion that I have with my students frequently about when to shoot in black and white and when to use color. You have a great eye for color, and I really like that you are showing us examples of your work.
the decision process between B&W or Color is a complex one. Timelessness is a huge pro with B&W photography. It's hard to achieve the same effect with color films.
Like you said, composition is also affected by this too! The focus changes. Props to you for being a good educator to the next generation
This is definitely a video I'll be revisiting if I ever get into film photography, which I most probably will.
yessir!!!
Definitely agree the warm "Kodak look" seems a bit unnatural in overcast conditions and shade but looks great in direct sun, backlit by sun, or even situations where the subject is in the shade but things in the background are direct lit by sun. If I see clouds in the forecast it's time to load up Fuji :)
what is the alternative for fuji? i have just picked up my analog camera after 15 years and i am mortified by the development! no fuji velvia in my country (and as i understand nowhere)
@@ahasver07 Fuji Velvia 50 theoretically still exists but if you want to shoot slide film be prepared to pay an arm and a leg for it. If you shoot negative film then you will only need to pay a leg 😂
I’ve actually never tried any other film stock besides Portra (only bc I’m new to film photography and it was what everybody recommended), but this video was super helpful in which other film stock I want to expand too! Will definitely want to try out the bw one and the Kodak Gold! I’m interested why you didn’t list out Fujifilm Superia or 400h though 🙃
GOLD all the way!!
GOLD TEAM RULES
Super cool vid 🎉 Thanks
I’ve used Eastman XX before and loved it, plus I’ve used some 250D which was leftover from one of the Star Wars films and sold off and spooled up for 35mm use.
I'm messing with some 250D now too! but that's SOO COOL
I always have Kodak Gold loaded in my Olympus Epic for my EDC. You never know when theres a good moment to be taken :)
Gold Team
This man using the basketball analogy reminded me of loki😭🤣
Awesome video brother!
oh totally. I had James Harden in my mind haha
@@whoschrischu ahhahahahah
very good ill take a look at the first one. Thank you
very good
Try Kodak Gold 200 at ISO-100. I did some compares to the ProImage last year and find you can buy 6 rolls Gold for the price of 5 rolls of ProImage. Otherwise, the results are virtually identical. But, I much prefer Ektar over either, except the higher cost.
I mainly shoot black and white, so my film of choice is Kodak 400TX.
I love portra 160 but never got such saturated pics. Did you tweak your scans in Lr ?
Lomo going from 6th man to superstar like James Harden lol great video bro
That is legit the player I was describing x)
Try out JCH Streepan 400 for black and white bro it’s so nice and hella contrasty
First I like, then I watch. Never regret.
what a homie
My top 5 :)
1. Lomography 800
2. Lomography 400
3. Cinestill 50d
4. Tri-X 400
5. Portra 800
What lab do you use in the Bay? I just picked up a used film camera and have been shooting around town for fun.
I regret not getting the Lomography 800 and Metropolis... I usually hate Lomo, but based on results those two films might be worth trying.
Yeah…..I’m a portra boiiiii but not gonna lie that Fuji pro 400h you gave me blew my mind
ooooo lalaaaaaaa Fuji Pro 400H!
Chou, I have a question.
Where to find those 35mm film cemera, I need them 😭😩
Love this video! I’m about to buy Lomo 800 cause everything I’ve seen from that film stock is so good. Do you over expose or do you know if it can handle over exposure? Recently I shot portra 800 and shot it at 400 and loved the results. I’m wondering if it can handle it the same way. Thanks!
same exact way. I overexpose by 1 stop by rating it at 400. I don't know too much about its latitude, but I'm sure its great beyond 2 stops
@@whoschrischu thanks so much! Can’t wait to give it a shot. 👍🏻🎞
Starting off with colorplus, working my way up to portra
I still have yet to try Colorplus! I also want to shoot more Fuji C200
CineStill 800T and BwXX.
Which of these film choices gives the most vintage early 90s feel
I love ektar 100 (i like overexposing a little around golden hour) and portra 160. Gonna try out that black and white film and maybe even shoot kodak gold more :P
I've never (intentionally) overexposed Ektar. How did it hold up?
@@whoschrischu really well actually. The image with the guy wearing a "patta" jacket is overexposed ektar 100.

Heyyyy fellow color blind photographer 😆 im always iffy about editing my photos because if it looks "normal" to me im sure its wrong 😂😂
Cinestill 800T !!
Kodac was kodac Eastman.
I'm wondering if this is that eastman.
good list. only thing i would add is Cinestill 800T.
that's a super fun film stock too. Just mad expensive. Using it (to me) feels like walking in a new pair of Jordan's. It's nice, but I'm super apprehensive to wear (moreso crease) them
@@whoschrischu haha. yea, Cinestill is over priced still. i just picked up my first roll of Lomo 800 last week before i left Thailand.. i would’ve picked up more if i’d known it was so expensive in the U.S. tho !!
Yooo that Faris wheel at 3:14
one of my favorite shots from the XPan and Lomo 800
Fuji Pro 400H 120, Fuji Industrial 100 35, Portra 160 35/120 😌 The Holy Trinity 😌
I wanted to get into film photography. How should I go about it?
Buy a Canon A1, a Canon FD 50mm lens, and Kodak Gold or Color Plus (then go wild)
@@whoschrischu thank you!
5+ years of experience? Why not 40? 😁
Anyway, IF I shoot colour negative film these days, it's Kodak Ektar, period. That film stock is however not my number one ever, that prise goes to Fuji Superia 100, which also had very tiny grain, great all do a little bit cooler colours, and it was CHEAP.
However, sadly, it's discontinued years ago. We could say classic Fuji, damn...
And for black & white film stock I'm really struggling to give my No.1 pick, but it boils down to one word, Ilford...
I now want to dust off my old Canon EOS50 and use stock for a bit☺ Iwas thinking of cheating and using the digital to get the settings until my brain starts remembering 😅
Im a slide film lover. Something great about slides projected or on a good light table
Yikes 😳 lomo 800 is $48 now !
People who say well why don’t you convert your color negative to a black and white digital image have never set foot in a darkroom.
Fuji c 200 :'(
Eastman is kodak
Ektar is my shit
issa blast
That's 1 million dollars he has in his hand there.
You a little late her dude.
This was the 80's and 90's.
264th view bb
ty bb. My favorite 264th viewer
Yeah Lomo 800 is sublime but disappointingly overpriced
very very true
Portra is getting so much love because it looks very "vintage". It looks like analog film and not like your iphone or digital camera. But to be honest I'm kinda getting tired of that look. It's fine. I have some in my camera right now and after watching this video, I kinda regret buying it. LOL.
CineStill 800T and BwXX.
Cinestill got the good good
