These use the chopper from the Mobil Directo since that is the design these Allertors were based on. The chopper in the 500SHTT is bigger by about 2 inches in diameter.

the 10/12 port 4-vane chopper used in early ACA Allertors was bi directional, because the unidirectional chopper was an ACA invention, and the 10/12 port chopper was older than ACA itself, and was simply strung along from the days of the mobil directo. I am not sure why they didn't remake it as unidirectional, but I have some theories:
theory #1) the 10/12 port 4-vane chopper, being strung along from the b&n days, was like "low hanging fruit", in the sense that the design was already existant, the molds for casting the chopper already existed, and most importantly, it was simple to produce, yet quite effective, so the financial risks of redesigning the 10/12 chopper outweighed the possible perks of doing so.
theory #2) the geometry and angle measurements between the ports of the 10/12 port 4-vane chopper isn't conducive towards a unidirectional design, so they just strung along the old mobil directo chopper and used it.
theory #3) all of the above

LSXR1200 Because it kind of is the same thing on wiki it says this,The ACA Allertor was originally designed in the early 1940s as the B&N (Biersach & Niedermeyer Co.) Mobil Directo and was used for air raid warnings during World War II. The Mobil Directo was made of metal. It came in 4 different port ratios. 8, 8/12, 9/12, and 10/12, with 9/12 being the most common. The siren could reach up to 125db, hence the name "ACA Allertor 125". The single tone 8, dual tone 9/12 and dual tone 10/12 rotors were derived from Federal Signal Corporation. In 1968, during the height of the Cold War, B&N changed their name to ACA (Allerting Communicators of America) and changed the Mobil Directo's name to the Allertor. Many aspects of the siren's design were changed, such as the Mobil Directo having an exposed motor and a belt-driven rotator, and the Allertor having a covered motor and a chain-driven rotator

First of all, these are mechanical sirens, involving a chopper or rotor inside a slotted stator, creating the sound. the bottom horn is the air intake for the chopper, and the air comes out the sides of the stator, and then out the top horn.

    • @childishtombino1275
      @childishtombino1275 Před 9 lety

+Patrick Murphy The bottom horn I suspect is the air intake and the top one is where the sound comes out of or vice versa depending on which way the chopper spins, the sound may come out of both but the bottom one is the intake!

The odd shape of the B&N Mobil Directo / ACA Allertor was a very inovative idea in siren technology for the time . Sound projection was at top level until Federal Electric Corporation of Chicago , Ill . Introduced the Thunderbolt series in 1952 . The Allertor was an electro mechanical siren only so no voice technology was around at this time .

I don't think so... I'm pretty sure the 10 port row is in the front for both of them. this video seems to accurately represent the sound of the air going through it, having seen a 10/12 allertor in person...
there used to be a either an allertor or mobil directo (more likely mobil directo, because I remember noticing the differences between the backs of "different ones of its kind", even when I was little, and it didn't quite look like the one in Currie Park, which I now know is an allertor, so process of elimination makes it a Mobil Directo) behind the fire station on Silver Spring drive in Menomonee Falls, WI, but it was replaced at least 10 years ago with an RM-130. I don't quite remember the exact sound, but it was dual tone, (it sounded "different" from the RM-130's that were also in town).
"Little me" thought it was the creepiest sound in all existence, and that if "the end of the world" had a sound, that would be it.

+Thunderbolt1000Tfan Ah Now I know the paint has faded out, due to the many years of sun exposure.

All 10/12-port Allertors look like this. They are very rare, but we are finding more and more of them all the time.

Jack Wood I know, but I guess I'm trying to point at specifically is referring to the interestingly-faded fiberglass shell and what appears to be rusting metal(?) on the yellow back of the horn.

+TheGameShack people wouldn't know quality even if it bit them in the ass, an Allertor faced the same fate in the town I live in except it was a 2001 :(

+TheGameShack #1: they don't realize that having the siren restored will save them a ton of money #2: they don't know the difference between "need & want".

+Tyler Davis They do, however, know the difference between "Battery backup" and "Power failure."
      HOWEVER.
I'll say that if they were smart enough they could've restored it and put it up elsewhere.
