Every work of art is a comment on all the works of art ever made.

I delivered and consumed lectures for over 50 years and find Jerry Saltz to be one of the few geniuses of lecturing! I am not formally educated in art, but I suspect he is a genius in art criticism as well. I also worked as an editor and can't agree that he needs to be briefer.

There are hundreds, actually thousands, of college art teachers across the country who can tell you more about art than Jerry. Saltz is just an average guy with a rudimentary knowledge about art who's figured out how to achieve notoriety by entertaining people. He puts on frenetic performances that are, for all intents and purposes, about HIM! Most people don't understand art and when someone pretends to be an authority on the subject, people are gullible enough to believe it.

      @@oleggorlachev It wasn’t a urinal - it could have been but it wasn’t ….
(( is there any proof that it was “used” (as a urinal ). If it hadn’t been used as a urinal- actually in a public “restroom”
and pissed into - then it wasn’t in fact a urinal - it was designed as a urinal, to be a urinal , but it hadn’t been actually used as a urinal ( and what if it had been? Was it found in a trash dump or seen in a display at a plumbing store. Was it bought from a ‘hardware’ store ? Did she really give it to him ? all of this matters or it will never be understood !!!

Agreed. Does he talk about the four primary social functions of art? No. Does he talk about the dozens of sub-functions of art to each of the four primary functions? No. Does he talk about the difference between High Art, Low Art and Fine Art? No. Does he talk about the value of popular culture and how popular culture has superseded both High Art and Fine Art because of movies, television, comic books, graphic novels, computer games and more!? No. He's entertaining and appears to be intelligent, but he's using his smarts to be a shill for the kind of art that is collected by millionaires and billionaires. All you can afford is the coffee table book. To be a professional artist you don't even have to show in a gallery these days. Any comment on that? No.

Jerry likes to portray himself at every opportunity as a anti establishment figure. A former truck driver with no education, but a champion of Artists. After following him on Instagram I found him to be quite different than he appears. I thought his comment section was a place to discuss Art, and theories about Art. However if you engage with him to discuss Art he lashes out at you in what can only be described as a petty vindictive tirade.
Out of the blue unprovoked He said I will go to my grave never having made a real work of Art. Yes this is the real Jerry Saltz don't be fooled by his phony persona.

No. Does he know why the painters painted animals and hands and those mysterious four dots on those cave walls thousands of years ago? No. He's close but he doesn't understand the functions of art that exist in all cultures around the world throughout time. And exist today, most obviously in popular culture. He might know the "art world" but this world exists miles away from the rest of us.

including you, me and... and... him ;)
See he's doing the best at being him, I hope you are too. Instead of digging and doing textbook student knowledge gaining pourist "stuff" (figure of speech) he's actually performing his art.
HE does have to bring in new knowledge and arts one of those topics he's interested in but that's not why.. although a reason.. that's not why you go to him or what his show is about.
