Puszta - Land of Salt and Sand - Go Wild

  • Less than an hour’s drive south of Hungary’s capital Budapest, Central Europe’s last and only wandering sand dunes surprise the traveller. These dunes are some 600 feet high and in continuous motion, shaping a landscape one would only expect in Africa. Spring storms whip up giant clouds of fine sand that darken the sun and loom over the low Kecskemet plain.

This video is almost unbelievable, to have such a different place in Hungary. Yes, we have learned that we have this place, but we navel ever know. It's history. One answer here did put it so clearly what has happened so many, many years ago. I am so pleased that I have seen it, and I did tied to post it to friends, hoping they will enjoy as much as I did. Thank you so very much. If there is anything like this coming out again, I would be so happy to see it. God bless all the people who made this video possible. 🙏❤️💙😱😇

"Their mother has not laid its eggs anywhere near the water, a strategy that seems to work... No predator has found the nest... The little turtles march off in different directions. So, predators can NEVER get ALL of them." What an exquisite pointer in survival lessons in the grand scheme of evolution... These and other documentaries of similar nature help me understand biology in all its interesting facets and varied hues and colours... Thank you so much.

LaurV “ behind of “ ? 😂 talk about inaccuracies , Haha ... sorry , couldn’t help it & Had to say something 😝. It always seems to happen when someone’s correcting something or remarking over something wrong. They’ll misspell something or have some
Kind of error / inaccuracy with proper word choice or within their sentence structure. ( improper / being absent of punctuation ,etc ).
What inaccuracies are you referring to ? ( also , I’m just lightheartedly joking in pointing out the errors in your comment. No hard feelings! 😁 )

"June 29th...I played a recording of its own call"...the commentary informed us..... that is exactly what I did with a Barred Owl in NW Florida 4 years ago. The recording attracted about 8 or 10 owls close to me...but one swooped in, under my back deck roof, where I was sitting & hit me in the head with its talons. It split my head open & I haven't played another "song" of a bird again, through my computer whilst sat outside. That one episode & all of the blood involved, was enough to tell me that it wasn't a good idea. At the time, I thought it was great, as I could hear the owls getting closer & in trees around me....but you live & learn. Some lessons are what you weren't expecting....

"Puszta" wasn't always like this. This sandy landscape is largely due to deforestation and river controll/channeling. The Hungarian Great Plains were once a semy woody-grassy and even dampish/marsh habitat, not an asian like steppe. But in the 15th-17th centuries, during the ottoman times huge deforestation happened. Both turks and magyars chopped down huge amounts of trees to create wood-ash. Wood ash mixed with thin manure then was used to create saltpetre, which was used to create black powder. Note that this method was used until large scale nitric acid industry arrived in the late 19th century. Both christian and ottoman armys needed a huge amount of black powder for their armys, especially during long campaigns and sieges. Then, in the 19th century in Hungary, a large scale river controll started. Leaders of the country decided to regulate the Tisza river, which often flooded over humongous areas. Late consequences are the gradual desiccation and even desertification of the Kiskunsag and other parts of the "Alföld" (Great Hungarian Plains). This process is further escalated by global warming.

The etymology of the name Puszta: (pusta = empty, pustinja = desert) in Serbian. And it is not THE only one in Central Europe - they exist in the rest of Panonian planes in Serbia, where vegetation gradually takes over. New Belgrade municipality of the Serbian capital has been built on one such sandy emptiness . Deliblatska peščara (sand-dunes) in Banat area of Vojvodina (300 km2) is underline with these same sands. It is under Unesco world heritage protection as it has very rich ecological value with many species found only locally :-).
