    Autumn Steam Gala 2018
    Saturday 29th September 2018
Opening with footage of 2018 returnee J27 65894 on the early morning Matt Fisher/NYMR Photo Charter with the lines impressive freight set, which included on wagon Talyllyn Railway Number 6 0-4-0WT Douglas sporting her RAF 100 blue livery.
The visit of Douglas was to celebrate RAF 100, with SR 4-6-2 Battle of Britain class locomotive 34081 92 Squadron (The Battle of Britain Locomotive Society /Nene Valley Railway) also fitting this theme. Centurion GWR 2-8-0 2857 visited for the Severn Valley Railway and we see this in a couple of shots between Grosmont and Goathland.
Southern Railway V Schools 4-4-0 class 926 Repton ran during the weekend without smoke deflectors and we see her on the lines goods set at Beck Hole.
The J27 is parted with her NELPG stable mate Q6 63395 at Water Ark, before we see some further footage of her on the freight train. Standard 4mt 80136 is currently facing north and seen arriving into Goathland.
Unfortunately a couple of shots there have been some audio problems but I have included these at the end because visually they still paint a picture, these were 92 Squadron on the teaks and 926 Repton on a freight.

My wife and I were on the first train out of Whitby on Saturday morning. What a day, weather was fantastic and the roving ticket allowed us everywhere. Great to see so many people about. The Bulleid pacific 34081 had trouble with traction on entering Goathland from Grosmont and we more slid than rose into the station, it was great listening to the engine. The carriages were very full though.
First time i have experienced a busy line, with signals working and holding us up at distance from Levisham.
Great video of the trains we travelled on.

Terrific shots of the J94 on the goods/. The leaking steam adds to the atmosphere, even if it does rather hide the loco sometimes.

Excellant video. The J27 in the first few shots on the goods train was brilliant. Looked like a great gala. I would like to do the NYMR galas but i have been told alot of good spots are quite remote so really need to have a car.

      Thank you.
I'd say once your at the railway the remoteness of the good photo locations isn't much of an issue. Usually most engines face south, with the southbound shots all accessible along the rail trail footpath. For example during my visit for this gala I started at Goathland and slowly walked down to Grosmont along the rail trail stopping off at each location on the way (best this way round as all downhill), and getting the train back up the hill to Goathland at the end of the day.

@@preservedrailway oh right so all your shots were between goathland and grosmont. Hmmm i may have to put this on the list for next year

All but the J27 goods one which were line side as part of the early morning charter (and they are all between Goathland and summit), Moorgates which is south of Goathland is about half an hour walk.

What did you use to film this?

    • @preservedrailway
      @preservedrailway  Před 5 lety

Panasonic HC-VX980EB-K 4K Camcorder with a Rode VideoMic Go. Only had it a month and still getting used to using an external mic (thus problems with the two clips I've included at the end)

Did you not use the wind filter thing on it, as there's quite a lot of low frequency wind noise (which is really unpleasant if you're wearing headphones). I know getting rid of wind noise is tricky, but I thought Rode supplied a dead cat/kitten with every mic they sold. Well shot video, though! Looks good on my 27" 4K monitor! (and generally sounds good, other than the wind noise).

Thanks for feedback. The wind cut is only able to be set with the internal mic, though there is a low cut feature which I'll try when out at the weekend so hopefully some improvement with that. Have had auto gain correction off and gain set to -24dB, which I may turn down a bit more as still peaking.

Spoiled by wind noise .You need to get an external mike .Rode do best one ,cuts out wind noise .
