There’s this misconception that we were bad only after Scottie went down and OG/Pascal were traded but that’s not true! We were struggling to be a 500 team with OG, Pascal and Scottie. The fit just wasn’t working. There’s a reason why we only won 3 games in a row close to the end of the season and couldn’t do it when Pascal, OG and Scottie were on the floor together. People underestimate fit. It’s the same reason RJ looks better on the Raptors because he fits better with this group over the NY group. Just because Pascal and OG are playing well on their teams it doesn’t mean they could have won anything as a group here because that fit wasn’t working. There’s a reason why Nurse couldn’t do anything with that same group the season before. This myth that the raptors suck now because they got rid of Nurse, OG and Pascal is not true. They were bad with all of these guys here which signals fit issues with that core.
Too many people are using Darko as a scapegoat as if this team was good the season before he got here. Derozan who everyone said couldn’t get it done here ended up exposing that core which was telling. Even after that core crap the bed we told ourselves ohhh “it’s all Fred and Nurse’s fault” Fast forward to a new season and that core could even put together a 3 game winning streak and of course it was time to find another scapegoat instead of looking at the possibility of fit not working!!!!Sure Pascal was putting up allstar numbers, sure OG was defending like crazy, sure Barnes won Rookie of the year but did they mesh as a unit or just putting up individual stats ? 🤔

OG is officially an injury prone player. I was a big OG guy because I’m a fan of tough defenders especially in this era of basketball where there are so few(thankfully the nba is changing rules to allow defensive players to thrive). Trading him will pan out in the long run same with the Siakam deal.

SB and Pascal were two of nine NBA players averaging at least 22 ppg, 6 rbg and 5 apg. Naw, the coach didn't properly utilize his roster on the offensive or defensive end. Darko had no incentive to focus on OG or PS... he was all about SB being the #1 option and face-leader of the team. GD was being given minutes he didn't earn nor deserve early in the season. GTJ didn't have a defined role. Pascal was seemingly told not to post up and cut then go stand in the corner. After trading OG the Raps should have kept Pascal because his return was less than what OG brought back. Poeltl, Siakam, Barnes, RJ, IQ is a solid starting 5 to build a bench around. Darko couldn't win with talent how's he gonna win with less talent in 2024-25? The Raps will struggle to be a .500 team next season. More Pizza Parties?

If we kept this years pick we’d still have next years pick top 6 protected. The only reason people call it a stronger draft is because the top end guys have more upside. Unless we completely tank again next year which I don’t see us doing the “stronger draft” stuff doesn’t apply. There was no reason for us not to want to keep this pick imo

@@RISTWO yea and the team would be pigeon holed into losing to keep a pick if it doesn’t covey again it keeps going until it changes to 2 seconds I think in 27. It was horrible for the team especially when the east it terrible. The team had to basically be a g league team due to injuries to get 45% chance at the 6 pick. If you can’t see that’s a terrible place to be time to wake up lol.
The 25 draft is considered a good draft because of how deep the pool is. It’s not just the top 4-5 players.
This years draft is compared to the year Bennet went first overall. Good news of that is players like Rudy gobert went late so maybe some hope we find something at 19 and it will only cost about 3 mil per season.

I very much disagree with next years draft being deeper. Ive been in my scouting bag for well over 6 months now and I’m my opinion you can find a quality roll player anywhere 1 - 30. @ben rogers you are not gonna get good young pieces for jakob poelt or bruce brown or boucher lol. you trade them for picks. let the players develop and play hard but not win games because they are not good enough. reality is say you traded 3-4 picks for 1 player, do you think the raptors are contenders? no they are not, they are play in or 1st round bounce. so you didnt want to be mid with siakam og and fred, but its ok to get rid of 3-4 first round picks for a player to be mid and then be in a situation where you are in a rebuild with no pick lol.
also jakob poeltl is too old now, by the time raptors are ready to contend, he will be too old and slow to be a part of this team. so its best to trade jakob poeltl while he still has value. do you think a 30 year old jakob on the slide downwards that is slower is gonna get you a 1sts round pick lol.
trading a pick also showed you no one is gonna give you anything good for a 1st. look at agbaji, he cant shoot and is why ainge got rid of him. of agbaji is likely gone next year after his contract is up.
besides scottie barnes needs a few years of development still. barnes cant even create his own shot cuz he cant ball handle well enough.
so there you have it ben. trade jakob poeltl, boucher, brown, and let gary walk and bottom out for 2025 high pick. it doesnt mean the players wont play hard, they just wont win games because they have to improve. thats the reality of the raptors in 2025.

A tanking team will defeat the purpose and make fans lose interest- especially casual fans. SB, RJ and IQ want to win not tank. Once SB gets paid he will force a trade rather than stick around for a long rebuild. Siakam went years playing without a true center and now Lewenberg is suggesting doing the same to SB? Pascal, Achiuwa and OG are thriving away from Toronto. So, why would the Raptors tank next season? To end up like Detroit? The draft lottery shows that the NBA powers that be don't reward tanking. @giovanni-ed7zq we're talking about Yak here. He is super slow to begin with. Raps just didn't give a pick for them just cause he was just another veteran player. They got him cause they knew what they're getting compared to a hypothetical prospect they can get like Coulibaly/Walker. Even if he slows down past 31yo, that is not his game. He is great at roll scoring and passing out of the post/ top of the key handoff assists. He was never a big switcher to begin with on D so we can keep him as defensive anchor.
Teams trade picks for vets all the time, and this was best for Toronto because we don't get players like him in FA. There may be others moves to get future picks but I'd be really surprised if Yak is moved

I have called for the Raptors to trade Jakob Poeltl in the past, because I believe he's really not very good. A way we could get back into the top 5 in the draft would be to trade Poeltl for one of those top picks. The Hawks don't seem like they'll draft Sarr, considering they have multiple starting caliber Center's already and there is no faith in that front office to trade either of them, so instead would be to target pick 2 from Washington. They desperately need a starting caliber center, which the raptors would be giving them. It would also have to involve other picks and players but I honestly have a feeling it could possibly get done.

The players are being patient and saying the right things right now, but things could change in an instant if this goes on too long. Draft picks aren't going to put them deep in the playoffs. Looking around it don't see any obvious choices. Third, because of the play-in, the league is more competitive now. Teams are actually trying for the play-in and because of that teams are keeping their talent. So climbing out of the bottom is even more difficult. Coming out of "tanking" mode isn't always easy. Look at the Wizards and other teams. I'm not sure the timeline is great to plan another terrible season. Will you be able to get BBQ to buy into the idea of losing most of the next 82 games is the best plan to build a winning culture? Are you going to risk losing even more core players just to move up in the draft? The key, for all teams, is finding good value and players that fit together. Jak may not fit the timeline. Maybe his stock is higher and the Raptors have a clear picture by January? They still need to move Brown (or let him walk for nothing), probably move Boucher, and let GTJr walk. If you want to keep young players motivated, you have to at least start a season with aspirations and goals. A play in Raptors team in 2024/25 doesn't mortgage their success for 2025+. If they draft a C prospect, you may want to keep Jak around for mentorship for 30-40 games too.

Raptors have the best 3 player combo 24 years old or younger in the NBA, why waste a year? Grady proved, he can get it done, he was down, then turned it around and looks like a nice starting piece. Add in Jak, and that is a very competitive, top 6 starting core in the east. To sign all the core 4 at their max deals they will eventually want, will have to be done with cleverish moves. SOOO this means, if we had this years top 6, or next years top 8 pick, its just another mouth to eventually feed, which they couldn't w/o moving one of the 4 they will most likely sign. Will this years number 6 be better then the core 4? Will they be better than Jak? If it is indeed a weak draft, then the pick is a role player. W/o signing Trent, there is some money, use it to support Olynyk, Obagi, and Nwora on the bench along with your two picks (have to move Brown and that money, along with Boucher, and or swindle a better deal for a player more useful to this team). And who knows, they might move the two picks this year, trade both picks to Utah who values picks, and could save money, to draft Knect iif he is around, a ready to go as a solid bench piece. The starters need support. RJ was dancing at the end of the season, his downhill game is scary. Quick is becoming a top guard and will be for years, his all round game is dirty. Scottie dominates, this leaves Grady open for 3's and drives, and Jak does the grunt work. Moving Jak makes sense, but not to blow it up and only f there is another center coming in to play, like Clingan

What I completely disagree with is the shot blocking and rebounding. Poeltl is a good shot blocker. The best in the NBA? Hell no, but he has the presence around the rim to bother shots and he has done multiple marvelous chase down blocks in transition. Even for a guy that's slower, he averages 1.5 blocks a game. To say he cannot rebound is CRAZY. Before the Raptors traded for Poeltl, they were literally the worst defensive rebounding team in the NBA. The majority of their losses in the time Poeltl was not there came from the lack of size and rebounding. As soon as Poeltl got traded there, they jumped so many spots in defensive rebounding it made a HUGE difference. Poeltl can certainly rebound. Also, to say he is the worst shooter in the league is also crazy. Do you hate him personally or something? The kid shoots 65% from the field on 8 attempts and he is the worst in the league? Sure, they are mid range push shots or layups, but that still could as a shot. In terms of 3 point shooting, he doesn't take them, but doesn't mean he is the worst in the league.
He HAS improved since his rookie year by becoming a more consistent inside scorer, passer and higher vision for the game. If you look at Poeltl from 2017 to the Poeltl in 2024 and you claim you see no difference, that is wild.
In terms of the fence post thing on defense, I would much rather have Poeltl as a post defender on guys like Joel Embiid or Jokic or AD. Who would you rather have? Scottie? RJ? Agbaji? Kelly? Poeltl by his size alone would fit better than these guys. I think you're underestimating the value Poeltl does bring to the team.

Trade Portal and draft Edey way more upside and we would have someone with enough size to give Wemby trouble. Yes he isn't fast and won't be good for blocking Wemby from taking 3's but inside he could stop Wemby think Gasol. Also Wemby is 90lbs lighter so Edey will have his way with him in the paint and wear down Wemby. If we are thinking about future the championship will be going through Spurs unless Wemby starts getting injuries

We took all those years to develope, Fred, Pascal and OG only to let them go. Now they are tearing it up elsewhere. I blame our problem on the fact the tam is owned by a corporation that makes decisions based upon the bottom line. As long as the seats are being filled the corporate owners don't care about a winning team if the fans keep showing up.

You say that like Pascal wasn't sabotaging the team by his iso hunting/ball stopping and Substandard paint defense or Fred's stat padding and shot chucking. I would have loved to keep OG but without a doubt we were unable to move pascal until OG was traded, other teams weren't offering to trade until the last minute

@@dancingbabybinsmeanwhile Og quiet quit and changed his agent to a Knicks executive son. Love Og but to pretend he was innocent is funny. Nurse had a high iso/ low turnover system. That entire narrative was and is still wrong. They are succeeding now because they are in better systems for them.

OG has been constantly injured, pascal lead the pacers to a slightly better than .500 record and almost ended up in the playin. He’s shooting 40% from the free throw line in the playoffs. If the Knicks roster didn’t implode with injuries pacers would have been swept. When pacers max pascal next year they’ll be doomed as 6-7 seed at best for next 4 years.
Raptors are in a nice position to try to tweak the roster around the new CBA rules and have Barnes RJ and quickley locked in as the corner stones going forward. Teams with 2 30% max players are going to start struggling to have depth on their roster. Never mind if they have 3. Just look at the suns, lakers and golden state. Those days are over.
