Big Water Skill Set: Stay Perpendicular to the Waves

  • If you fish in big open water enough, you will need this knowledge to stay upright. Breaking waves are tough to deal with. Couple the steepness of a big swell with a crumbling, mixed density frothy line of whitewater coming at you sideways, and there's not much you can do to stay upright. Keeping your head on a swivel and staying perpendicular to the wave sets is key.

    Hey bro I'm extremely glad 1st off you guys are both safe. I have my Oldtown Sportsman Autopilot 120, with the minnkota. I also run a Bixpy J2 on my rudder. It's the boat I saved for and wanted. I'm 5ft 7 153, but I can walk all over my boat. I fish large lakes and resevoirs. I wouldn't have been out in that. However I've been out on beautiful day's, and on a wide open lake I fish, the white caps come from nowhere. This is my 3rd season, in my kayak and it's awsome. Doing day trips, camp, and fish trips, or going out solo. I'm big on safety, with all I need in and on my boat. But I'm sure alot of anglers appreciate this footage, especially knowing and learning where to point my bow. These lakes get rough in a matter of minutes and sometimes you can't hide. Or need to go through to get to a bank. Stay safe guy's and thanks again. 🙏 🎣 💯🤙

      The Sportsman hull is a good one for big water. Chucks boat is the larger version. I can’t fully explain the physics of it, but there is more secondary stability in the longer hull with similar design. I feel like I could be sideways in a crumbling big wave in my Thresher 155, and it would mostly handle it for me. If you watch the big water safety seminar video, I flip a Pro Angler 12. I’ve owner a Pro Angler 14, and it’s a super tough boat to flip. The 12 went much easier than the 14. That extra length gives you more time to save it. I suppose that it’s all just additional volume.

    Very realistic approach to high waves and winds!
    So glad you did decide to share with us Jeff.
    I like most people think I would probably choose not to go out in those conditions, but I have been out and was monitoring the weather with Radio and cellphone app.
    And have had conditions change quickly with no prior warning!
    This was a great video to explain the do's and do not's!
    You may save a life with a video like this thanks again for sharing!

      Ron, It was right on the edge of what I will do. Erie is different than the Chesapeake. Those waves get bigger, but Chesapeake chop is tighter and breaks at lower wind speed.

    Great info in a format that I can get! I am trying to fish shallow water for redfish and go 4 mile out in a lake for trout that can get rough with 2-3 foot waves that break! I am hoping the take two could work! I don't go out in rough water but I do occasionally get caught! I might need an acorn shape hull with stabilizers! lol A front mount trolling motor would not have worked on the day you went out?

      Forgo the stabilizers! They lock in primary stability. You need secondary stability!

    I was on Erie once as a teenager on a charter boat. Almost lost my cookies on a much calmer day than this. How's motion sickness in a kayak compared to a big boat?

    • @TheLittleStuff
      @TheLittleStuff  Před 2 lety +1

      I don’t know. I’ve always been immune to it. That motion is enjoyable to me.

    Have you been out in these conditions on a large canoe? If yes, was there a difference in your comfort level?

    • @TheLittleStuff
      @TheLittleStuff  Před 2 lety +1

      I wouldn’t have done it in a canoe - not self bailing, higher center of gravity and catches the wind badly.
