- Taking apart (Deconstructing) this Harbor Freight 8" Survival / Hunting Knife for curiosity sake. I wanted to see what holds this budget knife together. I do believe I can put it back together stronger. Post up your ideas down below!

Bought one of those about 10 years back. Took out the blade and lined the opening with a good amount of JB Weld, tapped it back in and locked down the set screw. Its threads were covered in JB as well, so it is never coming back out. Found a plastic cap that fit in the butt end, and gave the handle a triple coat of Plasti-Dip. Makes a decent beater knife.
Oh, nicely done!
Take out set screw...drill through with 5/32 bit...jb weld blade back in and pin w/ 5/32 pin...bulletproof....
If you want a rock solid knife, replace the set screw with a drill bit shaft. It's also a great time to modify the blade shape. I chose to change the shape, to a bayonet type of blade. I can tell it works well. Also if you use a drill bit as a pin, you'll want to epoxy it in, and cut it off with a die grinder. Before I reassemble the knife, I'm going to put the handle on my lathe for a little modification... This is a great knife to personalize. Good luck with yours. 👍👍👍👍😀😀😀
i use my knives for fighting nothing else so to make my harbor freight knife an ultimate fighter i took it apart then put it back together with jb weld. its never coming apart now unless you break a piece off. i sharpen the blade and have developed some nice fighting techniques with it along the way. jb weld will hold together any blade no matter what punishment you put it thru
I rember ordering one in the 80s as a young teenager. I thought it was the best thing ever. Lol
yeah! me too. I'm not sure what ever happened to mine
Excellent video this one is gonna be a top video!!!
lol. That would be cool. Most of my vids go nowhere fast. lol
Some people are putting steel pins in where the set screw goes. By drilling all the way through. They also put some JB weld in where the blase goes. But I'd like to see your solution. Thread locker, along with some JB weld.
Not sure anyone could survive long with that construction lol thanks for the in depth look. 👍 I’m not sure if You still do Budk mystery stuff? They have a Bushcraft mystery bug out kit that looks interesting. The axe and rucksack look good and comes with mystery gear. I have been debating grabbing one
Its been a while since I ordered a BUDK Mystery bag. I needed to give them time to stop sending the same stuff out. I may try some again this year.
@@TheRealCobraBurnout yep, figured I had bunge watched the older ones. They do repeat too much. I also dig the back to the futurevtime machine build, good stuff!
@@mangojack1 thank you
You got my wheels turning! I have tons of old fixed blades made of great steel including some original KABAR Marine fighting knife blades. That Chi-Comm soft stainless blade is crap. I'll go by HF today and pick up a couple and see how it goes. THANKS FOR THE INSPIRATION! BTW. You should check out the low temp aluminum welding rod they have.
Low temp aluminum welding rod would be interesting to play with. Thanks
I drilled it out and epoxyed a hardened steel pin inside
We picked up 2 for the older boys. Every kid needs a surv well a RAMBO. Knife 😆
Heck yeah! Classic
Looking forward to the rebuild HF matches genius Cobra
lol, don't make me bust out the duct tape!
I switched the matches for strike anywhere matches and wrapped Paracord around the handle.
Excellent mods!
I'm thinking put actual paracord, small ferro rod, small lead sinkers, and if possible small bobbers.I would even go as far as drilling two more holes in the hilt for screws,so you don't slash yourself whitling your favorite piece of wood.Thats after you sharpen the blade. Good backup blade after improvements.
Can this knife dig for metal detecting stock though?
Seems good quality. Nice that the handle isn't 5 pieces.
It was better than I imagined it to be.
A lot of people remove that Alan altogether drill to the other side and pin it together
Cobra, I’d put in a bigger screw with Loc Tite or something, I’d replace the matches with better matches. Sharpen that blade.
Definitely needs some better fire starting gear inside.
I searched for the second video from you about modifying this knife. I didn't find one. I guess you gave up on it?
Yeah, no one seemed to care at the time and then I moved to another location. So the parts to this one are packed up in storage still.
@@TheRealCobraBurnout yeah totally u derstand. But it was good to see that you seen the positive about the knife. So many people just poo poo the knife. Everything has value if used within the design parameters. And one small modification makes the whole knife way better. Let's put it this way, would you rather have rock? Or the inexpensive knife. I'll take the knife.
@@devildogsbushcraft7898 For sure
The one I remember was handle camouflaged and the compass was outside the handle on the pommel. I also believe it was made in Japan. This was back in the days when everyone considered communism to be a bad thing.
Oh yes, the compass was on the outside on the old school ones!
I think we need a torture test on it! 😕
indeed
If you could weld it in that would be ideal and man you could put so much better stuff in that thing carry one fish hook you're guaranteed to lose it you carry a hundred you'll keep the first one forever lol 😆 the thread and button don't mean much I suppose unless you've got to give yourself some stitches so it'd be nice to have some kind of disinfectant alcohol prep or something in there but then you'll be loving that sewing kit but again you can put so much other cool s*** in there there's a lot of room in there before anyone says I know you can't weld steal to aluminum at least that's what I understand
Definitely a lot of potential for better items in the handle.
Epoxy the tang and drift a full-sized pin in there.
I like the way you think! Hope you are doing well
I don't think so
I believe you get what you pay for
I certainly would not have a Chinese barber freight survival knife😂
6.99 memorial day sale we got ours.
sounds about right!
Rambo!!!!!
first blood
I would make a bigger handle and replace all that survival stuff with gummy bears 😋
Twinkie size shaft?
@@TheRealCobraBurnout That will work too!😄
@@saltyshellback boom
the campus will come out i put a better one in for the blade i drill all the way throw and put a pin in it so it has the blade held in better i can chop with it spit wood with it the kit in it trash the one that came in it and put together a better kit for it
Excellent
Yeah Back in the 80s Everybody bought these Crappers thinking they were BIMBO........ I Bought a Randall Model 14........ Those cheap knives will give you problem in the field. Fun to play with and Mess around with but Useless As Teets On a Boar Hog........
I don't know where you are from but I wouldn't be messing with any bimbos around there. They sound tough.
@@mickeymoran8852 Ueah I think I ment Rambo......🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
They call it a hunting knife? This would be the worst thing in the world for actually skinning or processing ANYTHING. Worse than any Swiss Army knife! 🤣🤣🤣
They're Junk Dude....crap steel and weak joint....guaranteed to fail when you need it most.
get a FULL TANG, the hollow handle stuff fails UNLESS you get the CHRIS REEVE MONO BLADE, or the SCHRADE copies..
I have the Schrade SCHF1 Extreme Hollow Handle Survival Special Forces 7.5" Combo Blade, and man it is a BEAST!!!!!
only problem.. it is a HEAVY knife.. almost 17 ounces BY ITSELF!!!
I have plenty of full tang knives. Not really the point of this little vid. More of a curiosity type of thing. If you catch my feels. Thanks Dude
Id drill it pin it again locktight .in tube o use matches .mini fero rod tinder small fish kit just line sinkers hooks I have one I like it been out with me afew times
