      @@yourdrinkingbuddy basically your recipe (LSB and MMCS) but I added some Larceny B523 to bump the overall proof up to 107. It's sitting in a jug with 3 spirals and already getting better. Cheers!

      @yourdrinkingbuddy  Před 2 měsíci +1

      @JimF55yr interesting! You will have to let me know how it turns out. I worry 3 spirals could get oaky very quick. Taste it periodically just to make sure it doesn't over oak.

  • @apeekintime
    @apeekintime Před 3 měsíci +1

    Barrel Spirals are interesting to play with. I actually find USED spirals to preferred. I've had a few real stinker bottles that I bought out of curiousity and I've thrown spirals at them to try and improve the flavor - and it almost always improves bad whiskey.
    Using a new spiral in a decent bottle usually causes the bottle to get worse... Enter those spirals I used to enhance a bad bottle. Those spirals actually do a magnificent job of finishing good whiskey. They don't add a ton of harsh oak because the first bottle already sapped the super harsh edges off.
    Another way to approach them is to just let them soak in water or a neutral spirit for a week or two. With over 400 bottles I have enough dumb experiments in my head that I always have 1-3 bottles with a spire in them doing something.
    Oh.. and toasted spires have been my favorites to work with. They also don't deliver too much char/sour oak immediately. My favorite experiments so far are very similar. Throwing a toasted spire into a bottle of Rum Fire for a week to give it some color and tone down the CRAZY flavors closer to something I can drink and then using that spire to finish a spicy rye (like Old Overhold 114). It creates something truly ungodly to those of weak will... but it makes a crazy good Sazerac.
    The other experiment is something most bourbon lovers can enjoy. Toasted Spire into a Bottle of Goslings Black Seal 151 proof rum for two weeks... then throw that spire into... anything. I've tried it in a bottle of Pipe Dream and it was incredible. That one makes for killer Manhattans or a good easy neat pour.

    • @yourdrinkingbuddy
      @yourdrinkingbuddy  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I think it depends on your preference. The packaging recommends two weeks. I would recommend tasting it a couple times over a month, and yank it when you think it is where you like it. I have left them in for months and it does some really cool things.

    I pulled my barrel spiral at 2 weeks on Prudent Pappy because it was just so incredible and I didn't want to ruin it. Do you recommend longer?

    • @yourdrinkingbuddy
      @yourdrinkingbuddy  Před 3 měsíci +1

      After two weeks it slows way down. It still does add flavor, but much slower. If you go longer than two weeks, I recommend going months. BUT if you like it as is? Pull the spiral and enjoy.

    I do blinds all the time at home where I pick the lineup and have my wife do the pouring. I could let her go wild and pick the bottles but she' doesn't know enough yet to pull stuff that might make sense to compare.
    Anyway - usually after sampling the blind and getting down to the last quarter of an ounce in each glass I pour them together into a single glen. I would still do that with this lineup. The interesting part - the blends almost always end up being pretty good. It helps that I'm usually blinding similar proof, distillery, and/or mash bills.

    I made prudent pappy with MM CS 2 parts + Larceny 1 part from your previous video, but for some reason the barrel spiral made it super oakey after just a couple of days that it didn't taste good. So I took it out fearing it would be even much more oakey if I left it in for longer.

    I’m really excited to buy a barrel spiral and put it in my benchmark full proof, because of your recommendation. I plan to leave it in for eight months, like you did.
    I really want to try your prudent Pappy recipe, so how long did you leave your barrel spiral in? What are your thoughts on leaving a barrel spiral in your prudent Pappy recipe for a longer period of time, maybe three months, six months, or eight months?

    • @yourdrinkingbuddy
      @yourdrinkingbuddy  Před 3 měsíci

      I think it would totally work. I would try it at 2 weeks and if you love it pull the spiral. But you could certainly go much longer. It ages much slower after the first two weeks. So more happens in those first two weeks than even months after.
