  • What is the purpose of that, funny looking, spiral in the centre of the Jet engine on modern aircraft? Why am I not allowed to walk under the wings while Boarding?
These are some of the questions that I will be answering in todays video so make sure you stay glued to the video until the end!
If you have more questions about strange procedures around aircraft, don't hesitate to ask me in the comments!

One addition, as I’ve been working as ground service for some years during my study time: we used the signal pylons under each wing tip to prevent any vehicle driving to close to the wing. The wing tip distance is easy to miscalculate, when you’re sitting in the vehicle, especially if you have low installed wings, so the signal pylon helps a lot.

The spiral on the Nosecone is a German Luftwaffe invention; as in service on dirt and grass airstrips the paint on propeller blade tips wears off quickly, they did not paint the blade tips but painted the propeller spinners with a variety of color-schemes, the black and white spiral being extremely common. It was called the "Kullernase". Regards from Alaska!

The spinning blade gives off the most calming hum (hence the nickname hummers) and the blades look soft to the touch, almost daring you to reach out and touch them. as previous ground crew i can verify this is true, the only real reason for the spiral was safety, and the cones and stuff was to keep anyone out of the danger zones, there were a good 3 different crews doing different things, i was doing baggage, we had the fuelers and then the caterers all at the same time so marking of areas helped keep people from getting run over

For those of you asking, these rules also apply to Chuck Norris, because if he gets sucked into the engine, although that wouldn't cause him any injuries, it would be very dangerous for the aircraft.

Stoney3K Nope, they share a type rating with the 737NG, the large screens go to waste on the 737MAX because they are used in the same layout as the older 737s, just bigger, so no electronic checklist etc.

    • @avamendez1272
      @avamendez1272 Pƙed 6 lety +3

sean li can't speak for the 737 but on the Airbus, it is fadec (full authority digital engine control)
controled. turned engine starting into a non event. The selector is rotated to IGN/START, the #2 engine master is placed to ON and that's basically it. the rest of the sequence proceedes without pilot intervention:
      16 % ignition ON
      22% starts fuel flow
At 50% start valve closes, ignition off
Engine idle should stabilize at about 58%
      ENG mode selector to NORM
      Normal Idle Approx. 20% N1, 400C
      EGT, 60% N2, 600 lbs/hr FF.

I don't SPECIFICALLY know the startup procedure of the 737 (by airline checklist), but from my flight sim experience (which doesn't base my knowledge) here are the basic steps:
      1. Connect to external power or startup the battery
      2. Turn on the APU
      3. Once APU is on you can open fuel pumps
      4. Turn on hydraulic pumps as well
      5. Turn the left engine start switch to the start pos. and wait till 23% N2, then put fuel cutoff on idle
      6. Turn the start switch back to ground
      7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the right engine
      8. Before reaching the runway you need to turn off the APU to save fuel
Correct me if I'm wrong in any of the steps above.

Bonus fact, the tip of the spiral is sometimes made of rubber, this is to stop ice forming, it vibrates the ice off when the main fan blades at the front of the engine start spinning .

Hmmmm, there is a manifold that circles the intake lip of the engine that they pipe in hot air to heat up the intake. A sensor is inside the intake just before the blades. When that ices over, you get the caution for engine ice.
