108 Bead Knotted Mala Necklace

- Through our trunk show program we received a lot of requests for three 16 inch strands of the same gemstone round beads. After questioning our customers, we discovered that there was a growing interest in mala necklaces and this compelled us to design an exclusive line of mala strands. We started this line with a small batch of 8mm gemstone round beads and have expanded it to include 15+ popular gemstones, most available in two sizes, either 6 or 8 millimeters, and in matte or smooth finishes specifically for making mala necklaces. Our strands feature 115 beads so that you have plenty to make a traditional 108 bead mala, and a few extras to make a bracelet or earrings that match! This is a product we are super excited to develop and bring to our customers and they have been a huge hit so far.
The traditional mala was first created in India around 3,000 years ago and has roots in Hinduism and Buddhism. Malas are strung beads that are typically used in meditation. Similar to a Rosary, they are used as a tool to help keep count of mantras, and act as a guide to keep the user centered and focused in their meditation practice. We found in our research that many religions use beaded jewelry during prayer and for ceremonial purposes, making it a very symbolic and meaningful accessory. These necklaces have recently had a resurgence in fashion along with the long necklace trend. Some people simply accessorize with them, but others still use them for prayer or worry beads. They can be used as part of a yoga practice and if made with gemstones they can even have balancing and healing qualities.
We are also excited to add to our line a complete supply kit with everything you need to make your own gorgeous mala. We spent time during our recent visit to China designing multicolored nylon tassels to match our mala gemstone strands, and hunting for the perfect gemstone guru beads! Not into malas? No biggie. You can still purchase these strands to make all sorts of creations. They are a great way to get an extra long strand of your favorite gemstone round beads... And we believe there can never be too many beads!

Interesting way to do it. I personally find it is much easier to knot each bead on from one end of the cord to the other and finish it off by hiding the final knot in the tassel. Clean. Also, I've found that necklaces made with dyed/synthetic beads tend to dye your neck. I learned that one the hard way! Lol. Love your products.

Those are called round tip pliers. If you goto the craft store and ask for a knotting tool or knotting pliers they will give you something totally different. Thank you for the tutorial, it turned out really nice!!
In this video we use knotting pliers they are flat on the inside, not rounded. Glad your project turned out well.

Beautiful I like the technique my husband made one months ago it took him many hours I think it was 3. So I guess the key is to get that Silk is it easier to work with them waxed string that doesn’t go through the hole very well!
In Minneapolis we were supposed to get 6 inches of snow or more it actually warmed up so scary it might actually go to rain may be even worse because then it will turn into ice so I hope the Nordic gods bring us beautiful snow ❄️ next ⛄️ today

I’m wondering why you wouldn’t connect the 2 ends and have the finishing knots at the back of the neck instead of right in front by the tassel.

You can certainly finish your Mala in the back, and I know people who do that. I just prefer knotting closer to the tassel. Hope your husband feels better soon!

The knots blew me away. It's so straightforward but last time I tried it only with a toothpick and ended up with large gaps between the beads. Thin pliers are much better suited for it.
This is great, but what I was hoping to find is a tutorial on how to make the beautiful finishing weave on the two end strands of threads that hang down below the guru bead like my bodhi seed mala has. Does anyone know where I can find instructions on how to make this stylish weave? It seems a commonly used design on many of my mala beads.
I found this very hard to follow since you’re starting off with the tassel. I couldn’t tell if you were running your silk through each bead twice. It was confusing!
Krystal Rios I think she only went through the beads twice when she got done stringing the rest of her 108 and went into the first four she strung when she did the tassel. In the beginning I think she tested to make sure she could go through twice so when she got to that point at the end she’s know it wasn’t an issue

Then you very much for that tuto. I wonder about the last knot you cut because for that one you just make the knot and cut it ; you don't go through the beads as you do for the others knots. No ?

We used a guru bead above the tassel. Guru beads have 3 holes which allows you to string through and attach the tassel. (See how to string the guru bead and tassel at 2:06.) We used Griffin silk cord #8 but #10 would also work if you prefer slightly bigger knots. The Griffin cord comes with a handy "needle" already attached which makes stringing so easy. Hope this helps!

sorry if this is a dumb question but is the guru bead one of the 108 beads? or is it 108 plus the guru bead
Also called the “Meru Bead” which translates to “Mountain Bead”, the Guru Bead in your mala is the 109th bead. It is not counted as part of the 108 beads.

One quick question... Is it 108+guru or 107+guru bead makes the total 108?
108+guru. The guru is the turning point so it doesn't count. Some malas come with the guru bead offset and/or in different shape.
I have tried this a few times now and the silk is too short for knotting with 8mm beads, it's nowhere near long at 2mtres length, I've had to cut it all back out and wasted materials, I've tried to do it twice now. I even wet the silk cord and stretched it a little too as instructed on another video I found and then the cord snapped so I've wasted time and money twice now. Has anyone else actually made this with 8mm beads and knotting?
Hi Christine! Sorry you are having trouble. We also offer longer spools of nylon thread that could work better for you. We recommend using the .4mm nylon cord for 8mm rounds and doubling it with a big eye needle. You can certainly add spacer beads or some people add counter beads to help with focus during meditation.
