A UNIQUE WAY TO SEE PORTO | IS IT WORTH IT? (Porto bridge climb)

- Today we go for a new view of the beautiful city of Porto. From the air! But not like you'd think. We turn to the Porto Bridge Climb to take us up above the city and see it from a different side! Getting harnessed in and climbing the steps up to the peak of the Arrábida bridge's supporting arch structure was unlike anything we've ever done before! We also visit the infamous Harry Potter Bookstore, Livraria Lello...quite the experience. Today is our last day in Portugal! We will miss it, but excited for what's ahead!

Bookstore is gorgeous and I can see the Harry Potter sets, but 10 Euros, no. Thank you, I've enjoyed my view-cation to Portugal. Never realized just how beautiful is was. On to the next adventure!
It`s 5 Euros per person and if you buy a book it will be refunded to you at the till. They decided on that quite a while ago because number of ppl just wanting to go in and have a sneak peek was disrupting sales by putting off real customers coming in as it was before. Imagine, had to queue up to gain access and buy an ordinary book that is wanted or needed. On another hand, as they are a proeminent bookstore with lots of books in diff languages, it will offer the opportunity to anyone to buy some book they really like and not lose the entrance fee. I think it`s fair and thoughtful.

I've really been enjoying these Portugal videos. It's allowed me to see part of the beautiful country that my ancestors came from, though my family does come from the Azores Islands, not the mainland. If I ever make it there I'll definitely have to try the Porto bridge climb. I did climb the bridge in Auckland, New Zealand a while back and it was a very memorable experience. That bridge gave you the option of either climbing it or bungee jumping off a platform underneath it, though.

Chelle, you are not alone! I have not read any of the Harry Potter books or seen any of the movies as well, and I'm a 6th grade teacher! My students are always shocked. I adore bookstores and reading, though, so I already bought my ticket to Livraria Lello for this summer when I'm in Porto after walking the Camino Portugues Spiritual Variant in June. I am also going to add the bridge climb to my time in Porto! Loved the video!

Hi guys! Just for the record. LELLO Bookstore started to put the 5 Euros/per person entrance fee because the overwhelming number of people visiting (just for the sake of it) which was interfering with the normal flow of book customers and somehow disrupting sales. HOWEVER, if you buy a book, the 5 Euros will be refunded at the till when you paying for the items.
Also JK never went to Lello.
@@TheLuigiWTF she lived in Porto, so, a writer "never" visit one of the most famous bookstore is a bit dificult to believe.

I was impressed with your videos, I'm português from Porto and I love the city. Every weekend I go to see new places and I think people who lives here don't do this. So I think your search about the city was perfect. When I was younger I claimed the bridge in the night and there wasn't stairs... it was incredible

I don't know what to say about your video. You featured a few places but i am disappointed of the critical comments. We visited some of the places you went to. Portugal is a beautiful country. There was nothing negative about the place. It was also very safe which you didn't mention.

I said over on IG. I haven't read the Harry Potter books either Michelle. But, I have seen the movies. And I really enjoyed the story lines because I didn't know what was going to happen. The major problem I had. Was remembering names of characters. And just ask my hubby. He was a tad bit mad at me after the movies because of all the questions I had after watching. Because I didn't know the books. 😉
And you know what's next. No clues as to where you're going AGAIN!!!!! 😜😜

I have never read any of the books or seen any of the movies. A couple of my granddaughter’s and daughter’s have though. I have vacationed in Portugal with you and did not have to walk it. Thank you Cannot wait until see where you go next.
I totally would have tried to ring the church bell too. 🤫🤓😬 I absolutely love exploring all the different churches abroad admiring the architecture- it’s insane to think how the heck it was built back then - how much harder it was and the different techniques they used and also working the glutes with all those stairs!! Are y’all going to Mount St. Michael’s!? Y’all would love it there! And Carcassonne!!

A colleague of mine does this often in the summertime and it sounds like a blast! You have a waterproof bag with your stuff in it and you just float along. Just a FYI on the Lello Library, it used to be free up until a few years ago. However they were jam packed with tourists everyday that didn’t buy anything and that actually deterred people who wanted to buy books in town from going there and they were going out of business fast. So they implemented a 3€ entry fee and it has gone up and up since then. But to be fair it’s incredible that you can actually buy books and redeem the entry fee. Every time I go there I don’t mind the fee because I never leave without getting some books and the entry fee is automatically deducted at checkout.
In the square where you were talking about the library, the building we see in frame to the left of the screen (your right) is the university of Porto administration office. There’s so much to see here but overall I fell like you were able to experience the vibe of the city and what is like living here.
With you Chelle. Harry Potter pfffttt. Pay to get into a library? Pffft too,lol.

Well done for doing the bridge climb, did you feel like you would fall on the way back down, the camera angle for just a second flipped my tummy! Wow the book store looked amazing, so beautiful, but having to pay to go in - thats commercialism at its best isnt it lol. Some churches are built so beautifully and such a elegant, elaborate way it doesn makeyou wonder how they did it. So excited for your next stop xx

Fun Fact: When that Arrábida bridge was being built, the arch was so massive and heavy that on the opening day, a huge crowd gathered in the shore of the river just because they all believed it would crash. It didn`t obviously and it`s still standing today and enduring LOADS of traffic every single day from one of the main driveways that cross the city.
Livraria Lello (Book shop, not library ;) ) was actually not seen by JK Rowling. She already cleared that myth but she did live here and got inspired by many things in Porto. The cost of the entrance has a reason. It has become such a tourist atraction that everyone wanted to go in just to see and not buy book. It is a book shop so they almost got bankrupt. The "ticket" cost is actually deducted from any purchase you make so yeah.. I can`t blame them.

Love the vlog about my city! A side note: only recently with all the hr drama with the bookstore, did they start charging for the entrance. Only a couple years ago. Before it functioned like a normal bookstore.

Cathedrals in Europe are amazing! Can you even begin to understand how they built them so long ago!? Too, too funny…..I typed that just before you said it.
Not so many years ago, you could go from bottom to top at the Arrábida Bridge on elevators, and get out on the top and see the views.
I think the elevators are closed now. But you still can go and walk on the upper part of the bridge for free.
I'm not sure, but if you buy a book in Lello, the price of the entrance is refunded, don't know if still works like that, and having so many people that only go and visit, they need to charge in order to keep it beautiful.
You can add Rail to list since you arrived in Porto that way! Don't forget the scooters!
Honestly, I had never seen Harry Potter movies until a few years ago and we adopted one of our cats and named him Potter James Hagrid but I can’t tell you a thing about the books/movies! 😬🤣 However, I love bookstores of all kinds so that one I would have for sure stopped to visit and explore!
Porto is a beautiful city indeed but as a local i thought id tell you. Even though jk rowling gave english classes in portugal, she has said before that the librery had nothing to do with the harry potter movie. Im happy, though, that it has attracted so many people to the city, but its still sad that it was based on a lie haha

Regarding the entry price at Lello bookshop, the owners had to create it to avoid abuse and help in the maintenance and repair of the natural wear and tear that visitors leave. I'm not sure but I think the value or part of it can be deducted when buying books, which is actually the core of the business.

Those €5/person to enter Livraria Lello can be used to buy a book or something in the bookstore.

I wouldn't be able to go see all the cool things that you all went to go see if I ever went thever went there because you had to go up so many flights upstairs bikes upstairs and I ran In a wheelchair it was beautiful especially the church
Since you mentioned livraria Lello as one of the places that inspired the interiors of Hogwarts.
I’d like to point out something else that inspired JK Rowling.
The Robes and colored ties the students use at Hogwarts are inspired by the clothes that college students wear in some special days/weeks an activities, like for example graduation.
Especially the ones from Coimbra University
