Mary Eberstadt | How the West Really Lost God

  • In the sixth Ramsay Lecture for 2022 US author and cultural critic Mary Eberstadt expands on the central thesis of her 2013 title, How the West Really Lost God, arguing that the decline in Western churchgoing is more attributable to the collapse of the Western family, especially since the 1960s, than any other commonly touted cause.
In pressing her case, she disputes prevailing arguments about why Christianity is in decline, including what she claims is the dominant theory, ‘that material prosperity drives out God.’ Citing an array of historical and statistical evidence, she shows that poorer and less educated Westerners are less likely to go to church, with greater religious devotion among the wealthy and middle class. She also examines the psychological impact of the two world wars of the 20th century, as well as the impact of industrialization and mass mobility. While conceding that these have had some impact on religious devotion, she argues that the biggest cause of religious decline is the breakdown of the family unit, flowing on from the sexual revolution of the 1960s.

No one "loses" God. They didn't have God a second ago and forgot where they put him down. No. People discard God. I did.
I think about going back everyday, of reacquainting myself with things spiritual. But I give myself excuse after excuse to continue on my path to hell, telling myself there's time left to accept God. There isn't, we all need to get right with the lord today because there is no tomorrow. There is only today.

It is certainly true that the lack of family importance has damaged our society in a myriad of ways that are changing our lives. Education is no longer important. Discipline in schools is a serious problem. If family structure with a father at the head, providing order and cohesion, no longer exists, how can schools provide the order needed to educate? No respect for authority of family or God. Children no longer learn many of society's organizing principles in school. There is a major disconnect between our institutions: The family is disintegrating; schools are disintegrating; community is disintegrating; religion is disintegrating; law and order are disintegrating. We no longer have values that unite us in common goals and understanding. Only individuals, unguided by any transcendent, organizing authority, matter. Atomization causes free floating lost people who fear each other.

That's what you get if generations of 'christians' raise only the religious and kick out and banish any other individual that doesn't correspond with the religious template.
What did you think was going to happen?
      Family importance?
      If God than God.
Family can't come first if God does.
Now God just became a cause/excuse not to raise your children.

Cause if he didn't, we're all Able's children anyway huh? 😂
So family disintegration leads to more and bigger family disintegration? Who would have thought!?!
What's my family value if my family didn't value me cause I can't find Gods worth?
      That's cool.
      Time's on my side.
I enjoy the hell on earth they're already in.

This is a brilliant and insightful lecture. Clearly, within the mainline Protestant denominations the problem has been capitulation of their stance on traditional moral issues. This has facilitated massive congregational losses and turned them into cheerleaders for the Sexual Revolution. Now Evangelicals are tempted to follow the mainline denomination with their own brand of capitulation. Increasingly, Evangelical pastors are fearful of preaching on traditional moral issues because they think that such preaching is too divisive and "political." They seem to fail to notice that the New Testament integrates repentance from sin and a transformed (moral) life with true faith in Christ. Put another way, Evangelical pastors are failing to teach sanctification and pretending that Christ merely wants to kindly justify us for heaven. It is a toothless gospel.

I am not formally educated in these matters. I grew up in a Christian household in Australia in the 60s. This was a time of great flux in the western world when social morays and ideas changed. Formalities were dropped and people became more casual. People began wearing denim. It was also a time when telecommunications expanded. Ideas that had largely remained with minorities could now spread to the broader community. To this point my parents and grandparents generations did not seem to have access to information that would question their faith. They were working class people and were not taught science at school. Hi Mary. I found your presentation defensive and holding out little hope. I am only a beginning theology student at 71 and it is pretty obvious that nothing about civilization is set in concrete. Like all civilizations, even the most impressive, they all eventually come and go. Despite our glorious cultural heritage that we live and revel in and relish, what makes you think ours is the most special and eternal?
Regarding what F Nietzche said about traditional faith's death of God he also talked about the lantern falling to the ground and snuffed out... the light of the Age of Reason.extinguished... and our pressing need to find meaning and purpose and significance elsewhere just before the 2 great world wars. He went insane (? syphilis) before he expounded.
Possibly you could say that the times of Martin Luther crystalized this cultural/religious fragmentation of the West. Luther put the responsibility of one's ultimate destiny in one's own hands instead of the divine guidance of the church.... justification by faith & sola scriptura. *By _definition* " we" not only *includes* you, it *means* you and your immediate interlocutor, thus for al practical purposes when you use "we" you are saying *I*.
Is it not plain to you that if by" the divine" you seek to identify the idea of god, that idea is self-evidently man made or invented by men(human beings), some of whom l seem also to have invented a mister god, which has to be the ultimate fantasm.
God as a cognate of the general context in which beings find themselves, perfectly rational or reasonable, but *Mister* god, can only be a projection from or of some super me, me, me, or as the fantasy appears to run: " Not only am I made in the image of something, that image is of me, me, me, which clearly fits the definition of god as that which is more important to any given being than anything else at any given moment. Me, me, me , and its like and dislikes(emotional function) is clearly the god of most-if not all men(human beings, who unconsciously suppose that the context in which they find themselves is an image of the monster me, me, me, me-which is their god or that which is more important to them than anything else at any given moment, given that seemingly they not only suppose their mister god to have a beard and moustache exactly like theirs, but also a pen in his left vest pocket, and their likes and dislikes and petty judgements just as they do and elaborate versions of their purely subjective, relative an temporary likes and dislikes which they call "morals" and they seem to suppose that mister god also goes in for their famous and invented so-called " morals".
Seemingly mister god as an old Jew was dreamed up in Babylon and was the by-product of the wiseacrings of sundry supposedly learned beings kidnapped by a Person king as part of his pursuit of getting something for nothing, seemingly at a time when Persia was also known as the land of the finest or Aryans, which it is to this day.
It is a real puzzle; whence did men get the god idea if they did not come to it of their own motion? Some of them seem to suppose that that product of their psyche that they call religion has something to do with the mister god fantasy, when in reality it reality religion is almost exclusively concerned with that by-product of their emotional function that they dignify with the fancy word " morals" or occasionally what they call' " ethics", and seeking to impose their purely subjective relative and temporary likes and dislikes or morals/ethics on others they seek to justify and bolster their bullying by attributing their famous morals/ethics to a certain mister god who they suppose to be just as nasty petty judgmental and bullying as * they* are, which is true enough since their mister god is plainly a projection of their me, me, me, which is more important to them than anything else at any given moment, and is thus their god, which runs in tandem with their other god which one sage called "self-calming".
What will men*Not* do in the name of those two " gods"?

I was a little surprised that the theses presented seemed to be grounded mainly upon science, including social science, rather than philosophical reflection.
The famous Nietzsche words from Thus Spoke Zarathustra don't refer only to the decline of belief in the Christian, or more broadly Abrahamic, deity, but also to the decline of classical metaphysics. It was Kant who seems to have landed decisive blows against metaphysics 100 years before Nietzsche, but the long dying wails of classical philosophy continued well into the 20th century. I think the discussion could have gone further by focussing on the decisive German figures concerning secularisation - Nietzsche, Weber and Heidegger. For my part, I cannot see there can be any doubt that the power and insight of science in relation to the world of matter and extension has eroded interest in and passion for classical teachings: including both classical philosophy and humanities, and also religious teachings.
I was happily surprised to hear your comments about both waning and waxing in religiosity over the last 150 years or so, but I still think there is an overall downward slide. Although I am not without hope, I think a turn for the good is more likely to arise from a major world crisis bigger and more deadly than, say, the COVID episode.
Apart from the above, your attention to the decline of the family, the decline of fertility and of mental health as causes looks to be correct, but I see these kinds of things as manifestations of the deterioration of the Zeitgeist as noted so poignantly by Nietzsche, Weber, Heidegger et al.

I notice a technique here. She will take a statistic (Like for instance, 57% of lapsed Catholic Italians cite “social issues” as their reason for leaving the Church. She then jumps to the conclusion that the one social issue upon which they disagree is sexuality.
That is not necessarily so. Many Canadians turned away from Catholicism because of the Church’s systematic sexual abuse of children over a period of decades. And it wasn’t just the perpetrators who were the problem; it was the Church fathers who enabled the criminal action.
Are we to assume that millennials are not seeing the irony of pastors in Crystal Cathedrals preaching the virtues of poverty?
Are we to assume that there was no correlation between the coercive dominance of the Church during the Duplessis era in Quebec and Quebec’s turning away from Catholicism in the Quiet Revolution?

Pride makes oneself to further away from God,
Humbleness takes oneself nearer to God
Now the Bible states "By his stripes ye are healed " The stripes that man gave him, become his which he uses to redeem unto his words "I Hurt & I Heal" to also know why "It pleased God to bruise him" cause the bruise (stripes) become a tool of redemption
Now there are two ways to God, (No other way) The way of Christ to which he says "My burden is light & my Yoke easy " The other way is through Lake of fire prepared by the angels in God , Whether the light or hard way, man calls it as Punishment, for God it is Correction , no matter how long it takes, Be it a million or billion (eternal) matters not for God for he has no time,
Cannot really blame people for leaving Christanity & becoming Secular for the preachers of the day are too busy engaged in "tickling itching ears " for their own popularity, Christ was not popular was he ? Otherwise they would not have crucified him , but unpopular especially amoung the Elites , who are the Phd's of the day, so was the case with his Apostles,
The final battle is on Biblically called Armageddon which is the continuation of the war of Josiah by the Christ against Egypt in the Spiritual plains of Meggido, The beliefs of Egypt The final battle for Marriage & Family through a Consecrated Russia ( the concentration of Spiritual Israel) against Sodom and Gender ideologles led by Protestant America, Biblically, Prophetically and Spiritually revealed as SODOM (self explanatory) & EGYPT (its underlying beliefs that killed Christ)
The result prophesied & decreed "The west think they are their own creators, Salvation (future) shall not come from the west but from Russia " Now the words "THEY THINK TO BE THEIR OWN CREATORS" is but exposing the serpent's Lie at Eden "YE BE AS GODS" Remember the Enmity put by God,

Instead to suit their own desires, will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4) they will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths, the path to heaven is narrow and few will find it, God know knows the future and it’s in the Bible only God can and does show us what’s happening and what’s coming, the church is infected bending its will to keep the coffers full, most church leaders don’t believe the 10 commandments nor do they follow them, so if they have no moral compass why would people want to pay to be lied to?

I think Pope Benedict laid a finger on a baneful influence of greatest importance in his doctoral thesis in rejecting ‘Kantian conclusions’. Academia has grown around Kantian ideas to the extent of its being his intellectual manifestation in the workings of the planet - or the western section of it. There is inherent unreality in Kant’s metaphysic if the notable philosopher Bryan MaGee is accurate in his criticism (Schopenhauer) which notes a one hundred and eighty degree error in his metaphysic concerning the relation of concepts and percepts. In deriving the latter from the former (as innate) the whole world of real experience is both dismissed and down-graded. Moreover in Kant’s morality there is an appearance of his employing ‘sleight of mind’ in his activating principle of a ‘categorical imperative’ and which is a signature of his influence in the eponymous ‘neo-Kantian’ philosophical tradition through Hegel Marx down to the schools of Paris Frankfurt and now across the U.S. - categories have no seat in the divine as abstract constructs nor can anything of an abstract and nominal nature condition or impel an action as a necessary consequence of analytical accuracy. An adjective may not be put to a verb in simple grammatical terms. Technical accuracy in a moralistic scheme has no relation to Morality and ‘political correctness’ has no part in any general Ethical purview - but the phrase is pure Kant I believe albeit first deployed in 1967 by Mao Tsedong revealingly enough in connection with advice as to how to get on in the communist system.
I’d add that if Kantian experienceless brain-weakening as a cultural influence accounts for any part of ‘ideological feminism’ as opposed to the oft repeated ethical and culturally balancing occurrences of feminism over history - the specious political empowerment from it (nothing may really go forward while the sexes are not in cooperation) is a narcotic which one supposes may only end in the same way as with an individual addict - in a final choice for goodness when life and death present themselves just this side of extinction.
It is a comfort to know - from within the intellectually distraught and morally abased West that eastern orthodoxy is in Christian good health. It sometimes occurs to thought that the figure of St. James - the brother of Jesus - may have practical use for direction finding as simultaneously within ethical reach of Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Judaism.

    To fellow travellers
Dan. 2:31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible. This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.
37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold. And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth. And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
Dan. 7:9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened. beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame.
7:13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
_this Son of Man is Jesus_
Matt. 25:31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
:18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.

The truth of the matter is that gods have always been a concept but never a reality. Some have estimated that during the course of human history people have worshipped approximately 18K different gods, goddesses, objects, animals and even humans.
Not one of them has ever proved real, except in the minds of those who have chosen to believe in a particular one. People don't realize how powerful the mind is. You can so thoroughly indoctrinate yourself on an idea that it will become a reality to you notwithstanding that it is a falsehood!
However, it is duly noted that the notion of a god has affected the behavior of many, for good or bad. Can humans exist without the notion of a god? Probably not says history.
