  • Instead of getting a Thule or Yakima roof rack, I choose to get a commercial roof rack by VanGuard. I discuss why you might want to choose a commercial roof rack as well.

    Next time you need a torque wrench for a project, check out Autozone. They have a free rent-a-tool program where you can borrow automotive tools, such as torque wrenches, at no charge.

    Good idea for stealth and even looks great!

    Update on speed control----- I was able to install my switch right where the original off/on switch was. The speed control shaft was a little smaller so I used some thin fender washers to mount this. While I had it apart I painted the dome the same color as the van(Burgundy) and I had to make a filler plate to bulk up the thickness. I was surprised to see two switches in the package. Looks like a great fall week coming up here on the coast. Maybe do another trial weekend down at Assateague Island beach campground, with the ponies surrounding your van.

    Looks great but too tall for standard home garage. It wont clear...at least I do not think it will clear.
    Keep em coming! Great vids!

      Definitely too tall with the load stops on, but without the load stops it's under 6'7", which lets me fit in my parking garage.

    Good to know. Thank you. Have a great day.
    PS. Just wondering if it can be mounted on a Nissan NV200.

    Checked out the racks. Still working on the inside-insulation / electric etc. But I have question about the placement of the Maxxfan Dome install. I see yours is on the left rear. I put the bed on that side because #1 that's the short door. And #2 for stealth. It's easier to exit the driver side door and just pop into the slider on that side without walking all the way around. As you know there are cameras everywhere in the parking lots now. Did the Dome fan get in the way of your rack install. And how is the sound level if say you were sitting on the bed with the computer bench across on top of the sink unit. Would the fan noise prevent conversations. I am also looking at a speed control for that unit. Hope you can help as I know you are up on the electronic end of things and I am just a simple 75 year old Master Boat Builder!

      It didn't get in the way of my roof rack, but you may want to get your rack installed first so you get better placement. Speed controller is a good idea, it's a bit loud at full blast. This one is easy to install: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MK1SKRT/
      Here's text from a post I made in the cascade camper customer forum:
      The fan comes off with 2 screws on either side of the handle and 2 more screws to remove the grill.
      Next I removed the switch (unscrew the plate) and installed this guy: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MK1SKRT
      Wiring is pretty easy, but note that the white wire is ground (-) and black is 12V (+). imgur.com/a/r2tUhIX
      I didn't know if rain would be an issue so I layered on some liquid electrical tape for good measure, and also used some tesa tape (just fancy electrical tape that doesn't get gunky) to block out the red LED since it's bright.
      And while I was at it I also pulled the lid off and added a layer of opaque light-blocking film since I wanted it to be darker in the van even when I'm parked under bright lights.

      @@SmartVan Thank's for the reply. I was a tin knocker and adapt at sheet metal and I have rewired many a boat, where I soldered all my connections /copper wire. In auto they don't necessarily use black and red. I already had picked that speed control but not the one with the off switch. I am encouraging her to let me do the roof racks now before we cover up the ceiling. She mostly wants it for a cargo bag or carrier. Will keep you informed. Ps she has had me cut the bed down 3 times and the sink unit two times so she could fit her mountain bike in. What's wrong with these people from Durango!

    The base and part that wraps around the cross bar is made of what?
    The one I'm looking is 55 wide 2 bar on my Ram Promaster city. Do they sell wider? If my paddle boards are 31 inches at the widest part can I fit two side by side? I think they will only over hang 3 or so inches in the middle, possibly not even where the paddle boards land.

      @SmartVan  Před 5 lety

      The part that wraps is plastic, but it isn't load bearing. I'm not sure if they have wider, I did end up adding a 3rd bar in the middle though, so I have 3 bars total.

    This is a UK company. Is there a link for the us? I’m having a hard time finding any racks at all for my 2018 Promaster city.

    r u going to place a thule box on the roof? if so, how will that impact your solar?

    • @SmartVan
      @SmartVan  Před 6 lety +1

      Ended up getting a roof basket, but it does get in the way of solar, so I have to remove it once I get to my location. I can't run a thule box normally since I wouldn't fit in parking garages with it.
