- Grandpa wanted to make me something special for my birthday a few weeks ago and decided to make me some Strawberry Shortcake. We had recently come across this recipe from Pete Seeger and decided to give it a try. It calls for eating the shortcake while it is still hot and fresh out of the oven.

Happy birthday, grandma! I wish you many more great days to come. My mom would make two large biscuits and macerate homegrown strawberries for a few hours and pour the juice on both biscuits, followed by strawberries and whipped cream, big biscuit, the rest of the fruit, then piled high with the homemade whipped cream. It's a very fond memory and probably where my online name stems from. Great job, grandpa!

Many happy returns of the day, Grandma! Looks great and brings back memories of seeing Pete, Arlo, and assorted family at the Woody Guthrie Free Folk Festival, Okemah, Oklahoma, back in 2001, ‘02, or ‘03, I forget exactly, but me and my very young son hanging out with folkies, listening to great music while he played in the dirt with his toys. He’s too cool to admit it now but he played the heck out of Seeger’s Clearwater Classics cd when we were in the car. Also reminds me of my grandma and great grandma making me strawberry shortcake when I was knee-high to a grasshopper.

Lifelong Pete Seeger fan here. I have most of his records (yes, vinyl records), biographies, and music books, but I never had a Pete Seeger recipe before!
