  • Lecture materials and videos for a course taught at Harvard University entitled “Using Big Data Solve Economic and Social Problems.” This course provides a simple introduction to the work of Opportunity Insights and related topics in a manner that does not require any prior background in Economics or Statistics. The course was taught by Raj Chetty and Gregory Bruich in Spring 2019, and, with an enrollment of 375 students, was one of the largest classes in the university.

This is an extraordinary compilation of data. Other data have pointed in this direction for many decades (I have studied these issues for 50 years). So the points are not new and they certainly are not surprising. But they are compelling and irrefutable. On a technical point: I wish the data used in his analyses were somewhat more transparent--the data sources are well known, but their linkage for analytical purposes is mind boggling for those of us who have struggled with data privacy constraints throughout or careers.

Boring Lectures do no create skillbuilding, therefore no improve in human capital. Learning by Doing courses do. But this course is very informative and interessting.
