  • Jessie Mei Li shares thought from her own experience as a neurodiverse actor from a biracial family on how we can better connect through empathy and patience, and the need for representation and personal expression through art and creativity. Jessie Mei Li is a mixed race and neurodiverse actress best known for her lead role portraying Alina Starkov in Netflix's fantasy television series ‘Shadow and Bone’. Li made her stage debut in 2019 through ‘All About Eve’ and has continued to feature in works such as ‘Last Night in Soho,’ and her upcoming Netflix film, ‘Havoc’. Li has spoken on growing up with a lack of positive East Asian and biracial representation onscreen and will talk on her experience of tokenism and neurodiversity in the film industry and how it has affected her approach to roles. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    I loved it. This talk emanated from empathy, and it showed. I wasn't raised with empathy; it was something I learned, and I realize today that showing empathy alleviated a lot of my stress. It goes back to what Jessie mentioned. If you are scared of the unknown or if something or someone's actions frustrate you, what better way to deal with those emotions than by taking the time to understand the other person's point of view? I learned to be more open and less judgmental. It has made my life a lot easier (for me, my family and friends) and I'm glad to find more people talking about it. ❤

    She's on it about authenticity, it's ESG scores for cash. As a white man who has been knee deep in sewage for a week to get a hospital back up generator to work, I don't appreciate the tropes I see on tv either. Love is all.

    I would love to understand how a person that speaks about empathy chooses to share a story on her Instagram categorically accusing an entire population of having no ability to feel empathy. By doing so, dehumanizing them and exposing bias and hatred. TedX, is this who you choose to represent your values?

      Why do people always feel like making drama on social media

    • @ishic5
      @ishic5 Před 5 měsíci +1

      It's not about drama. The day that this was posted and Jessie shared a post on her Instagram about this talk, she also shared an Instagram story that targeted a population accusing them of unable to feel empathy. After receiving a few messages about it, she deleted it. But not before I commented her trying to raise awareness to how destructive it is.
