This one begs the question: Angel Island from Sonic the Hedgehog. If the Master Emerald is the thing keeping it afloat, does that require the ME to be big/dense enough to create its own field of gravity? And consequently, when it shatters and the shards fall to earth, what kind of damage are we looking at? 🧐 I’m no scientist but could be an interesting thought experiment.

    • Skylex157
      Skylex157 Před měsícem +2

@CB0516 wouldn't that be the exact same as this episode but changing the numbers to fit angel island or whatever island you want to levitate?

@Skylex157 How about how much power is required to have an island floating

    • Skylex157
      Skylex157 Před měsícem +5

The emeralds are magical and similarly to almost every object in videogames, they don't follow E=mc2, it doesn't need to be massive or hyper dense to be powerful, whatever is keeping angel island afloat is just some ancient levitation device that uses the emerald's magic power as a source
If the emerald was the source of the levitation by itself, everything would be attracted to it, not levitated upwards

When you were getting your weight of the city/buildings, wouldn't they be heavier due to it being in the gravity scale of Jupiter and not Earth?

    • Derek Eastman
      Derek Eastman Před měsícem

No, he did this right. The confusion comes from the fact that on Earth one pound of mass exerts one pound of force. 16225 lbs of mass = 7360 kg, 1 square foot is about .093 square meters, his number is pretty close. Then he multiplies by the total square meters to get a total mass, then by the gravity of this video game world to get a force. Checks out.

    • jaqque
      jaqque Před měsícem

@nika andriadze near the surface of earth, a converting lb-f (pound-force) to lb-m (pound-mass) is a factor of 1. since buildings are close to the surface of earth, it's a simple conversion from lb-f to lb-m. which is why if you took two scales to the moon, one balance and one spring, the spring scale would show 1/6'th your weight, whereas the balance would still show your entire mass. as noted elsewhere, (kilo)grams are already a unit of mass. no need to account for acceleration due to gravity. chalk one up for Austin!

Just change one property and a little hand-waving in your universe: make mass/gravity a di-pole… you can have two different kinds of material, that repels each other. It would be logical, that planets form from mostly one kind, with some of the other (comets bringing that in). Then your inhabitants collect that „strange material“, build something-let’s say a pyramid- and attach „normal material“ buildings to of similar mass and bam! Floating city…

@Chubby Punk The rockets were somewhat metaphorical; It was never literal.

    • Holly Sol
      Holly Sol Před měsícem +4

@Chubby Punk One would think so yes, until you consider that electromagnetic fields decrease with the square of distance and as such a magnet would require exponentially more power with every meter higher you wanted the city to hover at. Rockets do consume fuel tho, so there's really no easy answer. Like he said, the most efficient answer would be to just build it on the ground but that doesn't look cool lol

    • Chubby Punk
      Chubby Punk Před měsícem +2

@Holly Sol i might have gotten lost. He talked about rockets and whatnot so I thought the energy was also considering the fuel necessary to maintain propulsion constant. In my head, burning fuels would be less energy efficient than keeping a gigantic electric magnet on at all times.

    • Holly Sol
      Holly Sol Před měsícem +2

@Chubby Punk The method of levitation doesn't matter. The amount of force that would have to exerted to lift the city would still be the same so the Energy requirements would still be the same. The advantage of hover trains is to reduce Friction, not energy requirements.

To be fair, basements aren't a thing for like half the continental US landmass. Southeast is too close to sea level, ground water makes it effectively impossible. The southwestwest and probably a lot of area too close to the mountains won't do it due to seismic issues. And even then they tend to not go downward more than 1 floor.

Hey Austin, great science as always. Can you explain more in depth how you got the 16K lb/SQ ft for the city? If an extra story adds about 75lb per SQ ft, then 60 stories can roughly approximate to 4800 lb/SQ ft. Now that's earth lb, so you would need to convert to kg, but even before that, how did you go from about 5k to 16k?

You know just spit balling here, but what if the city uses chemistry to hold it up. I mean using water as my example, there are things lighter than water (normal ice) and when something that usually sinks gets incased in it (depending on its weight) it floats as well. There are also things lighter than air so would it be possible to hold a city up in the air based on this property rather than raw power?

  • Lambda Nebula
    Lambda Nebula Před měsícem +2

First off, your weight calculations are dubious, but I'll say, I suspect it's possible you even underestimated it. However, if we're in the realm of science fiction, the amount of energy needed to keep it afloat and the amount of energy they need to output to keep it afloat are two separate numbers. Think about it like this. The amount of energy it takes to keep you the distance you are from the core of the earth is based on your mass, but you don't need to output any of that energy, because the ground does it for you. If instead of trying to merely create upward thrust, you took advantage of some kind of force that, obviously would require input to utilize, but would do the bulk of the work for you, keeping the city afloat could potentially be orders of magnitude easier.

Floating city

2:41 I know what you meant, but the force is indeed not “teeny tiny-“ it is equal and opposite the force earth exerts on us. It’s just tiny in comparison to the mass of the Earth. I don’t mean to be nitpick-y here, it’s just the size difference of the arrows feels rather misleading- if those were the acceleration vectors, it would make a great deal of sense, but they would be wildly mis-scaled for a force diagram.

9.8 m/s2 of gravity is a decent amount of gravity. we just about able to keep planes in the air and barely able to launch stuff into space. I vaguely remember that if gravity was only a little bit stronger (in terms of our number of it, so instead of 9.8, but like 10.2 or something, I don't remember the article too well now), then we would not be able to go to space.

Technically speaking assuming you had a dimensional anchor, that being, an object that was anchored on a fixed point in relation to a pre-charted theoretical orbit, IE, the precise movement an object hovering over a planet would take after factoring in all the other orbits and forces involved, you could pull it off.
Effectively, you would just need to have the City anchored to a point in space itself.
Or, alternatively, you could have an object is multi-dimensional/magic/Quasai Metaphysical. As an example, you create a stone core that is halfway in and out of reality. It has a physical presence in the real world, but also a theoretical one that you can specify the parameters for. In the metaphysical world, it's light enough to float to the exact height required, while it's physical structure in the real world is just mirroring that without itself being effected by the forces that would otherwise be effecting it.
Basically you're anchoring it to another dimension, in a specific point in space, there by removing the issue of the real world having to support the city's weight in any capacity, you're passing the buck to something else.
Likewise, you could just use magic to anchor the city in place in relation to the planet.
It's honestly not that hard to fathom if you're working with Magic/the manipulation of metaphysical concepts affecting the physical world.

Your calculations fail to take into account one other thing, real buildings have an anchor in the ground to keep them from coming down or doing strange stuff, I suspect this floating city would have some very bad balance issues likely to flip or roll thus it would make things very hard to balance on top of the other energy requirements.

There is something that could be happening in the city and that it something known as a vacuum flotation system that uses an actual vacuum to achieve flotation. The problem with this type of flotation is that you would need to make a substance that is both extremely light and extremely strong in addition to it being able to basically just be big enough to encompasses a large enough area to allow you to lift the city. The biggest problem is that unfortunately you would basically have a vacuum chamber that would need to have something like 200 times the strength of steel and be about the same weight as a feather or probably much less in truth and be air tight. It might not be impossible to make it work but I don't think anything exists with those properties.

Isn't it flawed to be using the heights of the buildings inside the city, when the area of the city you used is the outside dimensions? They're clearly working on a different scale, inside to out (this much is obvious from how the tallest building is twice as tall as the city is wide). You should either be working entirely inside, or entirely outside.

The city probably uses almost no power to float the way it does. Have you noticed that there is no flames or even winds blasting from the bottom of the city? That means the city is not using propulsion to stay airborne. Here is how I think they did it (or at least how I would do it in our world given the resources):
To build the city, they would pour a huge foundation and build a massive (specially arranged) magnet on the ground. They would then bury this under a layer of backfill that is as high as the city will eventually be above the ground. Next they would construct a massive slab of high temperature superconductor encased in an aerogel insulation (with a bit of plumbing running through it to run coolant through to eventually cool the slab and keep it that way) on top of this hill. Then they would build the upper half of the city on and around this slab. Once the upper half of the city is built, they would activate the magnet under the hill. They would then begin cooling down the superconducting slab down to below it critical temperature, where is becomes superconducting (for such a large slab this would probably take months if not years but the upside is it would take even longer to heat back up and fail should it's refrigeration unit fail). This will cause the superconducting slab to quantum lock with the magnet (this is where a superconductor stays in the same place, relative to a magnet, even in mid air and even if it is below or beside the magnet in mid air). Once the slab is quantum locked with the magnet, they can then remove the hill leaving the city floating in mid air. Finally, they build the underside of the city that hangs down from the base. The only energy needed to keep the city afloat would be the energy to keep the superconducting slab cold and because of its sheer mass and excellent surrounding insulation that wouldn't be much power at all (once it's already cold). Their "amazing omnium powersource" would essentially just need to run a very large (extremely efficient) freezer.

    (TOF SPOILERS)
Theres a couple things wrong with this one because it was made BEFORE vera released and personally, id love if austin did a followup video using the lore we know now about how the region works!
(Beneath is the specific things wrong!)
The first and most important one: Mirroria city, and more importantly vera, abandoned Omnimum at the very start of the cataclysm because their tower malfunctioned at the onset. Its powered by extra-dimensional entities and a huge array of solar panels - the entire surface of the pyramid is all solar panels.
The second and most important one is that the city is kept floating by crystamax - crystaline organs from the main enemy in vera "greyspace entities" - which can completely ignore - or re-write - the rules of reality in an area. They effectively created their floating system by using crystamax's as a base, rather than using pure energy and logical science. THe city also floats specifically because of the grayspace entities - its a defense mechanism to stop incursions from getting into the city.
