Hard to talk about Jackson Browne without mentioning guitarist David Lindley, who played on most of Browne’s work in the 70s. Lindley came from the LA-based psychedelic band Kaleidoscope -- they were really one of the earliest bands to fuse world music with folk-rock, country, and rock.

Great you played this. Jackson Browne is the same age as me and I have loved his song writing since his first album. That he was able to write with such insight of the deep emotions of the human experince at the such a young age was really impressive. Now in his seventies, he is still working hard and producing great CZcams videos, including a beautiful version of this song on Austin City Limits.
His first 4 or 5 album were masterpieces but then he sold out

This track was immortalised in a scene from the Martin Scorcese /Robert Di Niro movie "Taxi Driver" (1976). It was only a brief scene but as I was familiar with the album I noticed it.
That scene is heart-crushing and emblematizes the loneliness of Travis as he grows increasingly bitter and enraged. And Jackson Browne’s song only accentuates the loneliness. Brilliant stuff.

Bruce Springsteen, who inducted Jackson Browne into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, called his album "Late for Sky" a masterpiece and it is. Need to review the whole album. So many other great songs including "Sky Blue and Black", Lives in the Balance, Song for Adam, Lawers in Love , Hold on Hold out etc

I never really listened to Jackson Brown much then, except for his music on the radio. His song sung by Gregg Allman "These Days" eventually got me to listening to Brown. His country/folk singing does appeal to me, and his songwriting is superb. Thanks for this. "Empty surprise" is a nice example.

Jackson Browne had a great influence on West Coast rock in the early 1970s. As someone said below, he wrote with Glen Frey of the Eagles and did a great version of a song that they did, Take it Easy. He also appeared as one of the shot desperados in the inside cover sleeve of their album, Desperados. He must have developed a rep in the early 70s because Elton John, just getting famous himself, played piano uncredited on one of the tracks on For Everyman (1972?), which I think from memory was the album before Late for the Sky and really got him well-known amongst his peers. (He also wrote Doctor My Eyes - a hit for the Jackson 5.) He's had a long career and is still recording and gigging, as far as I know. He had a tragedy when younger when his wife died (she may have been killed in a car crash, I can't remember and too lazy to look it up ...) ... and that fed into many of his songs. He's always had an appealing wistfulness in his writing and his singing and yes, his songwriting has always been top-notch, even from a young age. Just tasteful. There are some live albums which are also great, like The Naked Ride Home. If you liked this song, check out For Everyman and These Days from the For Everyman album, and Lawyers in Love or Tender is the Night from the Lawyers in Love album, a few years later.

Jackson Browne was and is the great bard of the generation that came of age during the 1960s and 70s, so it always helps in deciphering the meaning of his lyrics to understand the history of those times and what that generation of young people experienced. And, for those of us who were there and traveled roughly the same road that Jackson did, he was/is our great lyrical historian, both in personal ways and collectively.
Also, he has kept the faith politically as an artist over the years, remaining humble and dedicated to the values of the peace and environmental movements that he and the rest of us came of age with. I'd like to highly recommend three specific songs of his that demonstrate what I'm talking about: Before the Deluge, For A Dancer, and Lives in the Balance.
His catalog is vast and filled with impressive and meaningful work, but those three have long been among my very favorite Jackson Browne masterpieces.. . .
And, I might add that I am not generally inclined toward celebrity worship or gushy nonsense, but Jackson is the real deal!

Oh this is a deep well. Songs that are musts are Jamaica say you will , rock me on the water, the pretender, these days , something fine,, in the shape of a heart, too many angels, for a dancer , lives in the balance, im alive, theres soooooo many . As you dig into this artist youll come to like him as a person as much as his music

Karla Bonoff is a singer-songwriter all Jackson Browne fans need to check out. They toured together in '78 and their music is very complementary. I wish they had made an album together; as a duo they may have been more than the sum.

Back in the early to mid 1970’s he rivaled the best of the singer/ songwritiers.
In 1972, I was a sophomore in high school, Doctor My Eyes played on AM radio, been a fan ever since. My fandom speaks to the universal nature of his songwriting, I am hick from rural KY, and he's from Orange county in Los Angeles, our lives have nothing in common and yet his lyrics and music speak to me in a way that few artists do. He's written about every life topic there is, if you're wanting a suggestion perhaps For A Dancer, it's about the topic that scares us all.

He wrote Taking it Easy but couldn't finish it so the Eagles finished it for him...should try After The Deluge or For A Dancer or Doctor My Eyes or Rednecked Friend which is more rocking
JB is a classic CA rock/folker. Try Running On Empty, The Load Out, These Days, You Love The Thunder, Cocaine, Somebody's Baby, That Girl Could Dance, Lives In The Balance...
He was born on a military base in Germany but his home is southern California. Where he has a home off grid . He's often known to see street artists and engage them . There's a beautiful story in a comment section here on yt about his engineer whis sister was dying of cancer and he couldn't decide whether to go on tour or stay . He needed the money but knew his sister would be gone when he got back. He explained this to Jackson who told him ill make up your mind for you. You stay with your sister and ill pay your salary anyway. Years later the engineers child was backstage at a show and Jackson asked him about his parents remembered their names the whole bit. Thats who Jackson is.

I’m so glad you reviewed this. I’ve suggested this before and other JB songs. An incredible lyricist. He recently toured with James Taylor. He co-wrote Take It Easy with the Eagles.

Fountain of Sorrow. The Only Child. He has an astounding solo performance of his song, For Every Man, recorded live at an Amnesty International Benefit Concert on CZcams. For America. In the Shape of a Heart. Lives in the Balance......haven't really touched The Pretender album, which doesn't have a weak song......but Side 2 is flawless.
In 2021 this album was inducted into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress. Only 25recordings are selected each year.
Boomer here. Consider listening to "These Days, hs was 16 or 17 when he wrote it. He was wise beyond his years. Thanks for covering Late for the Sky.

Kind of always put Jackson Brown into the same league as Warren Zevon. Like them both but don't listen to either often anymore. I think you can also put John Hiatt on the same list. The stories they tell just pull you into the characters in a magical way. I was happy to hear this again. Great pick and great reaction guys!

When I saw Jackson Browne live in 1976 Warren Zevon was the support act. I think it was around the same time his debut album came out.
We came out of the folk music of the sixties with the explosion of rock and as quickly as the hippie fake had dissolved like sugar in the 70's rain ...we were quickly ambushed by this west coast folk rock which took control of rock and watered it back down to insipid Levi's wearing men mournfully singing about their heart felt sufferings...crying'wimpering,sulking and attempting to be the next Jesus with a guitar.

there were lots of music like this in the early /mid 70's. Some of it was good, For every good band though there was a 100 mediocre/bandwagon acts. This for me is the later.
