He could only move his left eye | The Philosophy of Jean-Dominique Bauby

- Tragedy is inevitable. It is a key figure in the story of our lives and there is no way we can get away from it. But how do we deal with this tragedy? This is where I think the story of Jean-Dominique Bauby can really help us out. He suffered from Locked-In Syndrome, where he was mentally sound but almost entirely unable to communicate with the external world. He lived in what many would consider to be a personal hell, but he managed to write a spectacular book about the experience. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly chronicles his struggles, his coping mechanisms, and the lessons he has taken from his condition. And I encourage you all to read his work.

Hi can you create a video about kierkegaard?
What an amazing achievement of Jean-Dominique Bauby to share his inner world with us by blinking with just one eyelid. As this task was physically difficult, he needed to prioritise and distill his thoughts into essential messages. With so many people burdened by negative thoughts, it's just beautiful to be reminded again of our power to be resilient and that we can find meaning in our life, despite extremely difficult circumstances.
He was truly a brilliant man! And I think deeply under appreciated. I am fairly confident this video will not get as many views as those on more well-known thinkers, but I thought he just needed to be spoken about
Reminds me of the lyrics from Johnny Cash's song, Greystone Chapel;
"Inside the walls of prison
My body may be
But my lord has set my soul free"
I do like Johnny Cash
Amen 🙏
What a sad fate some people share brings tears to my eye! My faith in God takes deep hit when I hear about such cases. Still to live even in such dire conditions and find happiness within requires strength and will which is abnormally high. He is quite an inspiration!
Exactly! It is such an example of life-affirmation! It’s truly wonderful
Its a crime how well made yet underated these videos are, great video as always.
Thank you! I am really glad you like them
I watch your videos to gather little nuggets of information and then go and impress my Moral Philosophy teacher with the knowledge, and your videos help me understand some of the books I’m reading like Camus “the myth of Sisyphus”. Since it’s Thanksgiving here in America I would like to say I’m thankful for you and your work 🙏
Thank you! And happy thanksgiving!
Would love to have a talk about your research techniques and how you found this guy. These ideas are life saving
As a writer, I can attest to this method of using the imagination to create a different world. In order to create fantastical stories I’ve held onto my childlike wonder and imagination. Using this method I’m able to create worlds and people beyond the normal boring world we live in.
I do think imagination is such an underutilized source of potential joy
@@unsolicitedadvice9198 yes. You’re right. It’s unfortunate that the imagination is looked down on in society as if it’s some childish concept where only children can play silly games with imaginary friends. I think if each of us spend a little time daydreaming per day it would balance our lives not just physically but mentally and spiritually to help us.
I swear you always upload your video when i need it the most, thx you friend !
Thank you! I am happy to hear they are helpful
I have been making these videos and I know how hard they are and how much research it takes to make each one of them.
Props to you my friend!
Thank you! I’m glad you like them
Your videos are very interesting and detailed. Thanks for sharing your brilliant thoughts!!
Brilliant work man. Well done!🎉
Thank you!
This has been what I've been doing my whole life. I have spent my entire youth in complete misery, and I still am. So what I'm going to do is do what my younger self did, hibernate into my imagination because life isn't giving me what I need. With the difference being I am actually doing things to improve my life but im going to be nonetheless very upset by my problems anyways so I'll go imto my head where it's safe til the results flourish
Such clear and pleasant speech. Good luck. Thank you for bringing up great authors. Love and Respect to everyone.
Thank you for watching!
I've always loved to lose it all and get lost in the infinite worlds of possibilities but i thought it is a kind of coping mechanism in order to escape reality so it is not a good habit to habitualize
Well I think it can be, but I think that it is not the only possible use for it
@@unsolicitedadvice9198 I agree as u mentioned in the video that it has a potential to have both negative and positive effects but I feel like that there is some sense of ambiguity in it that could be somewhat clarified by neuroscientific and philosophical facets.
It's only unhealthy if you decide to never return. The beauty of human imagination is in it's almost infinite and instant access. We don't have to hide from our minds, and fantasy is a healthy exploration, so long as we don't abuse it.
Psyop. People don't need to learn how to live through hell. Don't tolerate what they're doing to us.
Can you maybe do William James and his insane asylum experience, his health issues and how he ultimately was able to redeem himself from his bad situation?
Ah I love James’s work! That is a fantastic idea!
The extent of imagination is limited to Plato's Cave.. most are already trapped, don't know and don't care..
What do you mean, sorry? As in, people are trapped seeing the reflections of things in the world, as opposed to contemplating their forms, and ultimately abstracting to the form of the Good?
@@unsolicitedadvice9198Where this man had to use his imagination to survive, most abuse their ability in order to avoid reality. This makes Bauby truly exceptional, and reveals the mediocrity of modern mans whims. The Cave is a perfect allegory here.
@@unsolicitedadvice9198 I was trying to reflect briefly on our own reality, how we might interpret his experience, how we can be trapped within our own existence, that we often only see an abstraction of our own lives, that this man although faced with overwhelming odds knew there was more, and struggled to escape his own cave.. but often in our day to day lives, many people don't question or even perhaps care that their lives are only a shadow of what they could have been.. that he may have lived a more profound life than those who live in the drudgery of ordinary life.. - or at least something analogous to that..
Ah! That’s a beautiful use of the Cave analogy - and one I had not considered. I’m very much stuck in Platonic mode in my interpretation of the Republic, and sometimes forget the true richness of the metaphor
@@unsolicitedadvice9198 You help connect ideas and concepts; keep up the great work..
another very good video
Thank you! I’m glad you liked it
You've got a very charismatic face, your content is stellar, but I think your videos could benifit greatly from an animator.
If that's not yet an option viewer wise, that's scandalous.
I love your videos.
Thank you!
Favorite CZcams ❤
Thank you!
How did he breathe, though?
If he was stuck how did he even write anything or speak to someone to write for him?
He used a system of twitches to communicate
You have functioning limbs, full faculty of senses and you're more trapped than Bauby. Please decorate your mind, it's looking sadder. 😂
What? That wasn’t what I meant to say at all. I was trying to get across how his experience highlights things we value and take for granted, and that his act of creation is a wonderful example of life affirmation in very difficult circumstances. I’m sorry if I was not sufficiently clear
@@unsolicitedadvice9198 I agree whole heartedly, your channel is beautiful and thank you for your hard work. My reply was to nuke the ego of the covert narcissist playing dumb and toying with you. There's an epidemic of them right now and noones addressing it head on, hell most aren't aware.
Oh I’m terribly sorry I think I misunderstood you. I thought I had got the wrong impression across and was eager to correct myself. Thank you for the kind words and I am glad you are enjoying the channel!
🐱👍
Please decorate your home it looks so sad
Haha! I only moved in recently
