  • Dr. Clevens: Let's talk a little bit about the recovery from Otoplasty. As you may know, Otoplasty is the plastic surgical procedure that addresses, prominent, protruding, or misshapen ears. Oftentimes, it's known as a pinning back of the ears. I perform Otoplasty as an outpatient surgical procedure. It takes about an hour to perform the procedure on both ears. After surgery, I put a big bulky dressing in place. That big bulky dressing stays in place for about two to three days. Once the dressing is removed, we ask patients to wear a headband, to apply a little bit of pressure on the tops of the ears.
Most of my patients find that they are able to return to their ordinary activities, back to school, back to work, back to social activities, about five to seven days after surgery. Most of my patients find they are able to engage in normal day to day activities, after about five to seven days. I do ask my patients to refrain from aerobic activity for about two weeks, and to avoid heavy lifting and bending for about one month. The results of Otoplasty are permanent. Once the pinning back of the ears is performed, you can enjoy the result for the rest of your life.
