WERNER SCHLAGER created a milestone in the history of table tennis by performing the great feat of being world champion at the World Cup in Paris in 2003.
The path of the champion was not easy at all since he faced 4 top Asian players in the world online, in the round of 16 against the legendary Korean kim taek soo, then in the round of 16 he faced another world legend, the Chinese Wang Liqin , very intense match that you have to see!
In the semifinal he meets the Olympic champion Kong Linghui, which was one of the most intense matches in the history of table tennis.
The final is against another defensive table tennis legend, who surprised in this tournament, managing to be in the grand final, nothing more and nothing less than the Korean Joo Se Hyuk.

WERNER SCHLAGER creo un hito en la historia del tenis de mesa al realizar la gran azaña de ser campeon del mundo en el mundial de paris en 2003.
El camino del campeon no fue nada facil ya que se enfrento contra 4 jugadores asiaticos top del mundo en linea, en octavos de final contra el legendario koreano kim taek soo, despues en ronda de 16 se enfrenta a otra leyenda del mundo el chino Wang Liqin, partido muy intenso que tienes que ver!
en semifinal se encuentra con el campeón olimpico Kong Linghui, el cual fue de los partidos mas intenso en la historia del tenis de mesa.
La final es contra otra leyenda del tenis de mesa defensivo , quien sorprendia en este torneo logrando estar en la gran final nada mas y nada menos que el koreano Yoo Se Hyuk.

The match vs. Wang Liqin really was the deciding one of that well-deserved championship. Not only did Schlager play exceptionally well, but he also showed great mental fortitude, as he was trailing behind during most of the match.
that's how it is ! mentally he was very strong in this tournament, too smart to play the matches
I have watched all the Worlds since 1987, and 2003 is the most exciting championship viewing overall. Schlager was like Bob Beamon before he nearly jumped beyond the sandpit; so full of beans he could hardly contain himself! And, my, did he make the most of his mental state; he performed beyond himself to win this.
Successive wins against Wang and Kong, no one has done such as that and also gone on to win the Worlds. Time and again throughout that semi, Schlager hit an outstanding forehand flick off the serve…. but Kong did not learn the lesson, and, on the match point that Kong earned in the 7th end, he gave Schlager a serve that allowed him to use it again to save the match. Each time I have watched this tension-filled match, that final forehand flick is like the ticking time bomb waiting to explode!!
The final was “easier” only in the sense that Schlager was one of a handful of players who were supremely confident at reading & playing chop - even the best chopper in the world. 2 of the other such world players were Wang and Kong, so Joo Se Hyuk was up against it, no matter who he met in the final. His was a superlative achievement just to reach it.
Schlager’s off the bounce counter kill at deuce in the final may be one of th most clutch shots I’ve ever seen. Risked it all and it paid off. Edit: thanks poster for the great content!
I was there during all the week. I Will Always remember the tension i felt from everybody there at 9-9 in the 7nd game against Kong Lingui. Everyone of us (french people) want Werner Schlager victory

Incredible achievement from schlager, this was a great tournament, a real spectacle. And with the entertainer joo se hyuk in the other half of the draw. I dont feel the same when i watch table tennis today
Thanks for condensing the 4 matches. After the match points in the 6th game of the quarter final, it seemed like destiny. A great tournament victory for Schlager. Hope I'm wrong, but at the moment I don't see any european (including Moregard, Qiu Dang and Jorgic) capable of repeating this.

back these days table tennis was all about biiig forehands :D the final really was the easiest game of the last 4, it was just perfect for the final show of schlager, that win was safe and he knew it :D
Of course, after taking out 2 of the great references in this time, Wang Liking and the Olympic champion Kong Linghui, they were filled with a lot of confidence.

He quit way too early. It was a pity. Say what you want , but for me there's beauty in his efficient game of serve and attack. He didn't have this textbook technique, which made him stand out, at least for me.
He was over 40 when he retired.

He used much more top spin than today's players. Nowadays when you look at the Chinese and you'll wonder how fast they play. But they play mostly straight and blocks. Schlager's top spins were hard to return.
That's right, he was able to sustain the attacks very well, in addition to being a very intelligent and mentally strong player
Ball was smaller. No point playing much spin nowadays. Killed the beauty of the game somewhat for me. What's worse: The wanted to make the game easier and easier to understand that way, but won't achieve it as it's still to much spin for spectators to understand. They need to make it visible instead to be more attractive and thus attract more spectators. Instead they killed the sport for many players that way diminishing playerbase even more.
@@TT-Freak Yes, the small ball wasn't bouncing the same angle with a good top spin. It could almost glide the table thus make the return very hard. You can't do this with the big ball now.
@@TT-FreakNO. The 40mm ball was used for this tournament, the same sized ball used today.
@@jdixon25 You are the one who hasn't done his homework I'm afraid. There is a reason why it's called 40+ and back then 40. Regulations were different back then and even if it was called 40 the balls were allowed to have 39.7 and that's what they were on overage. While today regulations demand the ball to be at least 40.2 . That's half a millimeter and makes a huge difference. Apart from that it's so obvious visibly different as well , one can see that the ball curves much more, the bounce is different than today. Though you go ahead and explain to people like Schlager, Boll and Waldner the difference:)

At this point in time (2003) they were already playing with 40mm (celluloid) since decision at the world championships 2000. First usage of 40mm celluloid was at the world championships 2001 Osaka/Japan.

Now, with Sweden
Countries like Sweden, Germany, Croatia, and Serbia had at least 1/2 the population of China they would destroy the rest of the field. Many Chinese take up or get introduced to table tennis from a young age, then you combine that with the population and you can see their dominance in the game. I give credit to Sweden though, they have better style and flare IMO, they dont look like robots.
@@MrYoumitube Highly populated countries mostly ranked at the bottom of Olympic table. Resources can't match the population, not everyone play sports, those who do may not like TT or have the talent. (Population only relevant for economics, all people work or consume) Age is a factor, but all pro started young, East Asian or European. Timo starts at 4, Waldner 5.
Europe fell behind becoz it didn't keep the flow going. Whereas Chinese constantly improve their game. Robot or not, they shape the way of playing today. Most stylistic player is Xu Xin. Not Swede.
No excuses, Europe need to buck up.

Das wollte ich vor ein paar Jahren auch wissen und hab bissl recherchiert. Werner soll nun ein paar Verfahren am Hals haben, die gegen ihn im Zusammenhang mit seiner längst konkurs gegangenen Akademie wegen dem Steuernhinterziehungsverdacht eingeleitet wurden. Der war Megatalent aber eben kein talentierter Geschäftsmann.

The forehand serve of Schlager has the ball thrown towards himself at a great distance from time to time. Has any umpire ever called an illegal serve?
I don't think he was called for that service. Maybe now he could be but not back then. That service, his backhand and mental strength won that tournament for him. His opponents had to be very passive against that serve, or made many mistakes..
Under nearly every table tennis match I watch people are argueing about serves. Nearly every achievement is tainted, nearly every player accused of cheating. What have they done with these rules...

...Самый переоцененный чемпион за всю историю настольного тениса. Ни стойки, ни техники, ни выхода к мячу, работа ног - пляска рожающей бегемотихи, но - по очкам выигрывал, не придирешься, всё по-честному. Я отнюдь не в восторге от китайского тотального доминирования в сегодняшнем ТТ, но хорошо, что они подняли уровень игры настолько, что в топе просто не стало места для игроков уровня продвинутой клоунады, как у Шлаггера.
Такая стойка, выход в мяч и работа ног позволила ему стать чемпионом :)
@@anonymouscrew6647 Скажет так: у него было поразительное чувство мяча и стола и просто нечеловечекая интуиция. В принципе, феномены с подобными качествами были еще раньше: шведы Вальднер и Перссон. Перссон выглядел еше ничего в техническом контексте, но на Вальднера всегда было противно смотреть с его тошнотаорной раслабухой у стола. Но в результате - самый результативный чемпион за всю историю ТТ, емнип. Сейчас у таких игроков нет шансов против китайских "теннисны биороботов".

Знаете, вот хочется что бы за столом на равных сражались и *пьяные бегемотихи* и *роботы*. Так интереснее. Можно восхищаться битвой Ван Чуцина и Лю Гаоляня, но вот, скажем так, истинного наслаждения нет. Шаблон доведенный до абсолюта, до безукоризненности.
Когда меня, великого чемпиона нашего двора и окрестностей, привели в теннисную школу, я обыгрывал там почти всех погодков. Но как только тренер заставил меня сменить хват, и класть этот чертов указательный палец на саму ракетку, а не на ручку как я делал раньше, у меня пропал мой фирменный удар слева, и мир лишился потенциального чемпиона))
А через полвека я узнал что один из японских чемпионов мира, этот палец клал по радиусу. То есть его кончик касался центра ракетки. В инете есть видео его игры.
Пройти трёх лучших китайцев и в конце уделать лучшего защитника ...в пляске бегемотихи!?. Вы зашорены стереотипами и отказываетесь поверить в факты. Шлагер первый, который играл убойными топсами с такой техникой бекхенда. И сейчас этот бекхент применятся уже как наследие например тем же Кольдерано. Да и форхенда топс удар только в последние годы стал приоритетным в сравнении с классическим времён Вальднера

It is kind of obnoxius but more tolerable than players screaming Cho-le! Cho everytime they score a point, without considering that they are winning 2- 0 on the first set. I hate Harimoto and Im not a Schlager fan.

How much money did he get here for winning the title? Any ideas?
In table tennis you can't earn much from the tournaments alone. Several thousands or ten thousands of Euros but not more. The players make their living mostly on advertising.
