    Here in N Wales I've been plagued by slow internet for years. The fastest speeds I can get with home broadband are 1Mbps download & 0.3Mbps upload... not great for a content creation workflow! And then came along Starlink...

    This 10Gb, 4K video uploaded in two hours... it's actually taken CZcams longer to process it! Compare that to my usual case of having to leave a ~10minute, 3-4Gb video to upload overnight and just hope it's done in time to publish the next day - I'm very, very happy with it.

  • @overnightdelivery
    @overnightdelivery Před 3 lety +4

    Wow man. First starlink video I've seen with over 300Mbps. I had a similar experience when Fiberoptic was recently installed at my place. At first the install guy had me setup on wireless and he apparently didn't know it couldn't deliver faster than 150Mbps. Was initially disappointed. He claimed the speed test wasn't accurate... but it was. After I used a good Ethernet cable my speeds shot over 900Mbps for downloads and uploads. But honestly unless your downloading massive files or uploading a massive 4K video, you won't notice much of a difference above 200Mbps for general web use. Fiber is spreading much faster than it had been in the past. You'll see it before too long. Cool to see those speeds over the air though too.

    •  Před 2 lety +1

      Correct, i also have 1G/1G fiber, but most servers in central europe can‘t even handle those speeds. And my WiFi also bottlenecks the connection to 400-500 MBit/s.

    • @jackpine1991
      @jackpine1991 Před 2 lety

      900 Mbps is fantastic. I myself currently only get 10 Mbps download and 0.8 Mbps upload (the fastest available in our area) and that's WITH fiber. Our local phone company switched from copper to fiber about 5 years ago which bumped up our DSL from 1.5 Mbps download so moving to fiber won't guarantee fast speeds, at least that was my case. I believe that's due to the majority of data still passing through copper and fiber only being used to connect the local telecommunications box to my house. Anything above 100 Mbps would be great; I'm really looking forward to Starlink.

    Are the monthly payments paid through the app . If I wanted to stop the service and start it again at a later date is it possible just using the starlink service, ie thru the satellite link. I have great internet at the moment but as a precaution shtf scenario with loss of electricity to mobile masts then I could rely on solar and backup power and restart the starlink service so I am never without internet. Its so important nowadays not to have internet.

    The best I can tell, Northern Wales is 53°North Latitude. Starlink Shell 1, consisting of 1440 satellites, has an orbital inclination of 53°. This means all the satellites will be directly overhead or South of your location. It will do no good to have an unobstructed north sky, because there will be no satellites north of you. If you have a place with an unobstructed view up and to the south, east, and west, there will be no need to put it on the roof. If you are south of 53°, you may have to adjust to give some north access. I'm in semi-rural area of Louisiana in the Southern US, and am impatiently waiting. At 31° North Latitude, I will put mine on the top of my fireplace chimney. As you said, high speed fiber is not coming to me. It is however about 3 miles away, a little too far to get decent speed over copper lines.

      @@FamauMedia thanks for the reply, a ping of ~45ms that starlink supposedly gets is better than the 140+ that my 5mb ADSL pulls in. I still cope on Netflix/Teams calls working from home, but can only manage 720p streams. Re Fibre, I made a request under BT USO, plans have been drawn up, budgets approved, and they're just awaiting land owner permission to start the work. That will give me full FTTP. Legitimately curious how starlink handles ping.. living where I do, I've learned the location where you live/how far your internet needs to travel REALLY affects your ping. Got like 20 mbps down and 2 up but 600+ ping with everything. Causes a lot of problems

      @FamauMedia  Před 3 lety

      Ping isn't great, I get bouts of lag and packet loss on Forza & Rocket League etc... but it is still very much in beta phase, wouldn't expect it to be flawless

    •  Před 2 lety

      Starlink satellites have a low orbit of ~500km, that‘s why the ping is low.

  • @la7dfa
    @la7dfa Před 3 lety

    Happy for your good results. Your first test by the wall shows you have little clue about what an ideal horizon for Starlink looks like :)
    On the GHz frequencies used, just a branch of a tree probably will stop you signal ^^
    But as more sats are deployed, it will be more and more forgiving, since we likely will have more options than just one at a time.
    As you I live very much at the countryside, and have been waiting since 2014 for fibre. But actually I know I will get it next year, so the best thing for me is to wait for that. Meanwhile I have 10Mbit unlimited via 4G on a 35km 800MHz connection to the mainland! Its enough for watching video less than 4k, so no complaints.
    But it will be a different story next year with 300/300Mbit for sure. No more waiting two days while downloading MS Flight simulator :)

      It's addictive isn't it! Built my first PC in October, spent loads in the Steam sale... and all I play is a free game through Epic 🤣
      The big boys in the telecom industries (mainly BT & Openreach here in the UK) are going to start losing customers like crazy once Starlink gets publicly released. If anything I can see government approaching SpaceX directly rather than working through existing channels. Better for us consumers!

    I have family in Wales and yeah the internet access they have is terrible so I think Starlink is the best option right now. I guess it will be a while before it is affordable for simple home users but hopefully not too long. Glad it is working so well for you!
    High speed internet is so important yet people still act like it is a luxury. After 2020 I am now of the opinion that decent internet makes life easier than grid electricity. After all it isn't that difficult (expensive maybe but not difficult) to setup a generator go power your home but you can't buy a drum full of "internet" like you can gasoline/oil!
    Really hope this stuff kicks BT a kick in the ass to get fibre rolled out to more remote areas. I know it isn't super simple but if the area has electricity there is no reason they can't get fibre deployed as well, they have certainly had the money handed to them several times over the past twenty years! God knows what they've done with it 🙄

    • @satysin630
      @satysin630 Před 3 lety +2

      @Ben Dover I know the economics of it, that is why BT have been given billions over the past twenty years. Same thing in America yet still no nation wide high speed internet as the norm.
      I live in France with 10Gbit fibre internet to my home that only costs me €40/month as the ISPs were actually held accountable for the rollout, I wish the same were true in the UK (where I am originally from).

      My nephew was an early beta tester for Starlink in Washington State, USA. He is just as happy as you are. In his case, he was already using an Amazon eero Pro router and a couple of Amazon eero Beacon's to provide a mesh WiFi system in his home. He kept that in place and just plugged in the eero Pro to the Aux port on the Starlink router and everything was up and running. You may be able to do the same thing to provide excellent Wifi coverage to your house. You end up with two networks, but that's probably not a bad thing since you would likely want to keep your business on the less congested Wifi anyway. Even better, if you just plug in your own Cat5 or Cat6 cable to the Aux port and then run it over to your house and set up the eero Pro there. Of course I mention the eero Pro just because that is what he used, so I know it works. There are plenty of other great Wifi Mesh products to choose from, if you have another preference.
