- Travis Pastrana succeeded in triplicating three of Evel Knievel’s iconic motorcycle jumps. Donning his own Knievel-like costume, Pastrana used an Indian Scout FTR750 to jump 143 feet to clear 52 crushed cars and 192 feet over 16 Greyhound buses and concluded the "Evel Live" event on the History Channel by jumping 149 feet to clear the fountains at Caesars Palace.

Watched this live with my dad. He passed in late September and it was one of the last cool things him and I did together. I miss you, dad.
God bless your father. May he watch over and guide you in heaven forever.
Thats a great memory that you'll have forever.
Thanks brother Jeff for sharing that .The world misses your dad. Just those short words tell us your dad was a great man. He was also blessed with you.
I didnt need a cry today man.... ima go call me dad and tell him I love him
Sorry for your loss man
Everyone comparing them is dumb, obviously it's completely different then back in the day. He was honoring Evil and putting on a show. Not trying to prove anything.
It's just kids in the comments. Just enjoy the video. Like 80% of the other viewers did.
I'm no kid and I Know Travis. He wasn't doing it to honor Evel Knievel at first. That's just something that was said later. Since he was doing the jump where Knievel did he thought it'd be cool to wear the uniform. Then it was suggested that he ride the same motor bike that Evel Knievel did in the jump. Or should I say, the same type of motorcycle with several modifications. If he was going to do something to honor Evel Knievel. He what are use the same wrap specifications which he didn't. And he wouldn't of made the modifications to his motorcycle which was the Indian that he did. It wasn't the show or honor Evel Knievel it was to show that Evel Knievel has nothing on Travis Pastrana. A comment well many comments were made to Travis. He couldn't make the jumps that Knievel did back in the day with the same set up and motorcycle as Evel Knievel. Well Travis didn't even want to try with the ramp specifications. When Travis tried a smaller jump on the Indian that wasn't modified yet. When he would hit the landing ramp or even doing just small little jumps. He was basically bouncing out of his seat on impact. So modifications were done to the front and back shocks. My father what's good friends with Robert Knievel and worked with him on the Caesar palace jump. They want to call it a recreation of the Evel Knievel jump and it wasn't a re-creation in any way. The only thing that was the same was the number of cars and the number of buses. Yes the motorcycle was the same but like I said had modifications. The ramp was totally different. It had a different degree of angle and a launch ramp was much longer. Travis was not merely just putting on a show. like I said he was getting a lot of s*** about that he couldn't do or recreate a Robert Knievel jump. Travis didn't want to do the jump as Evel Knievel get the jump back in the day. If Knievel had things that these guys and even the motorcycle his son had when he did these jumps. Robert Knievel jumps would have been a lot bigger.
@@barsaf9989 no these are not just kids making these comments. These are adults that no the risks that Robert Knievel took that are not present in modern day.
So the only way to honor evil would be to use the same bad shocks and same ramp set up and crash?? Of course not. He did a modern day version of the jump and easily could have went way further but didnt. Running the dame set up as evil would make no sense he crashed on landing half the time
@@chandlerthoma9173 oh my God you must be the smartest guy in the world to call me on a spelling error on a comment I made. Like I said I'm sure you've never never have been guilty of misspelling a word on a comment
For Travis Pastrana, that was like a walk in the park... Legend
"there's just one Evel..." of course. And there's just one Travis. Is a tribute from one big one to another. Stop comparing.
The difference with Evel was that every jump had an unknown outcome. It was a different level of excitement. He was crazy to try some of the things he did considering the equipment he used and the fact that he relied completely on instinct to plan the jump. When you watched him, you knew it was very possible that he could be injured or killed.
On the other hand, Travis is obviously more skilled and the risks are completely understood in advance. The equipment is much better and the ramps properly built. Most importantly, he has the benefit of computer simulations to determine takeoff speed and ramp angles. This allows the jump to be designed with a large safety factor. Something Evel didn't have. Takes skill and guts to execute, but it helps to know it will work before you do it.
What Evel did took balls considering the risks. When the risks are understood it's less about balls and more about confidence and execution. With the technology and knowledge Travis had, Evel would have made it look easy too.
That’s why Evel found it so hard to get insurance. I’m sure the landing ramps for Travis’ jumps are huge for insurance purposes as well as safety.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Love Travis, and it's an awesome tribute. I always wondered why Evel never tried the parabolic arc take off ramp that his son Robbie started using which is a smoother and higher launch. Also, wondered why he used the Harley Davidson street bike, rather than motocross bike with more suspension.
Evel's take off approach for the Wembley bus jump was so insane down the aisle of the stadium, and the impact with the steep take off ramp bounced his back wheel off the ramp which caused him to lose traction and power at the most critical moment of acceleration up the take off ramp.
All that said, Travis has done some far crazier, death defying stunts, than anyone I've ever seen.
Fun fact...earth is a level and stationary created realm...no coriolis effect...
@@live2thefullest617 Evel used a Harley XR-750 which was a flat track racing bike. My guess is he always wanted to be very pro-American and at the time there wasn’t a quality American motocross bike being made. Evel has said he knew he might be short in his landing at Wembley but he knew Harley Davidson couldn’t ship him the part’s fast enough to change the gearing (no FedEx back then) and he didn’t want to disappoint the fans. Robbie Knievel had the advantage of custom lightweight frames on his bike and knew a motocross bike was the only way to do the jumps he did and Evel readily acknowledged that
I watched this when it aired..what a joke. They could of used the exact same motercycle as Evel had ..Evel used straight takeoff ramps , Travis used curved kicker ramps . Travis is WAY more experienced at the art of cycle jumping...Just saying , they should of used the same bike ,same ramps.
This is especially cool for those old enough to remember Evel. Travis demonstrated amazing skill on a bike not designed to fly. He also paid proper respect to Evel. Well done.
Yes it's a big heavy Indian but as a matter of fact they did design it specifically to fly (make this kinda jump). Look at the shocks and suspension on that thing. Most definitely not stock.
Not saying this was easy by any means but what ur saying isn't accurate and I think it woulda been way better with a replica bike that Evel used. Not to mention the type of ramps Evel had to use were totally garbage compared to what was used here. They literally wouldn't even allow Pastrana to replicate the old school ramps, thats how bad they were
Bud Man they wouldn’t allow it...but I’d bet the farm that Travis would’ve done it if they would’ve, and would’ve pulled it off. he does 1000x crazier things than this at his house, along with the rest of that crew.
Bud Man and of course it’s not stock. Why would Indian risk sending a stock bike out there and having the chance of something go wrong with it with everyone watching.
This is a custom flat track race bike from Indian, quite fancy suspension to begin with and quite light for its power. They probably just set up the already very fancy race suspension for landing jumps. Nothing on the flat track indian is really production, but it's one amazing machine. It's a shame they didn't really put any of the capability of this bike into to production replica flat tracker Indian is now making.
Agreed

way back
@Zanzibar979 Spotted the left wing wack-job.
This was pretty awesome to watch. I was a huge Evel fan as a kid. I had a poster of Evel jumping the buses hanging on my wall. There were a couple things that bothered me though. The announcers kept saying no one ever did it. Uhhh.. Robbie did it. Also Evel didn't practice. He set it up and did it. No computers, no air bags etc. However, you have to give huge credit where it is due. To the people who say it looked easy.... considering the weight and suspension travel of the Indian, if you don't do it perfect, you crash. There is no in between. Either it is perfect and looks easy, or you crash and maybe die. Ask the guys who tried it on moto X bikes and failed. They can tell you how easy it is. Great tribute Travis.
Right... and if I remember right, Evel's landing ramps were narrower. Still amazing though, and a nice reminder of a childhood hero.
Yeah and look how many times he failed and crashed horribly lol
Love to all riders...jumping without a ramp or landing
@@TheReginold It was a different time. If the landing ramps here were as small as Evel’s ramps were, no one would insure Travis and no one would agree to air it. In fact, Evel’s fountain jump was not aired. ABC would only air it on tape delay and only if he made it due to how dangerous it was.
@@everything777 He had a good jump ratio though?
For all the haters, Travis wasn’t trying to say he is better or anything like that he was just showing respect for Evel by doing these jumps you bunch of jack straps
James Polucha Completely agree buddy. Travis makes it look easy and that brings out the couch warriors.
Jack strap LOL NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Leave jack alone.
Travis is better, but he's had state of the art equipment to practice with, that Evel never had
What's a jack strap😂😂
Love how he does it sitting down just like evel
Pastrana's ability to adjust his balance and angle of the bike in the air is amazing. That's something that Evel couldn't do because is bikes were too heavy. Once Evel left the takeoff ramp, he was just along for the ride until he hit something on the other side.
No. Evel chose (and customized) this motorcycle, a 1972 Harley-Davidson XR-750, because it was a light, dependable racing machine. Made of steel, aluminum, and fiberglass, it weighs approximately 300 pounds.
Cool but not fooling me
Back then riders hadn't figured out that revving the engine or stopping the rear wheel alters the pitch of the bike. Serious difference. Physics. Evel went by seat of the pants, literally and painfully most of the time.
@DAD0123 Probably closer to 400, but you make your point. Also 4" of suspension travel made it tough.
I'm 58 years young and this event brought back memories of myself and my good friends at my house watching EK's jumps.. man those were the best of times.. freaking awesome! :)
Same here. Now I gotta dig out my Evel Knievel lunch box.
Jaytube106 remember the stunt cycle toy that you wound up and released!! They don't make cool toys like that anymore
And this guy doesn't have to spend the money on his hospital bills.
HAD ONE OF THOSE LUNCHBOXES!
Absolutely - That was soo cool. The toy got wound up on its stand and the gyroscopic action of the wheels would make it go halfway down the block, or the release button wouldn't work and it would get stuck and rip all the skin off your fingers. Good times!
This here needed to happen, and it totally made my day. Well done Mr. Pastrana.
As a kid I grew up watching Evel I had all the action figures and motorcycles and have been riding ever since.
Thank you Travis for living the dream!
Anyone who thinks this is easy, go get that indian and some ramps and give it a go. Travis you are the man and what an awesome job you have done. I used to love watching Evel jump them ramps.
Old Dude Drumming, you realize that Indian was completely modded and this was nothing but a 2hour commercial for Indian, right? No Indian comes stock with a swingarm like that
Stop crying!
Impossible for me and most but likely at least 10,000 people in the states who could do this. Easy for them and certainly easy for Travis.
you can buy this exact bike, FTR750 dirt tracker for $50k US....Travis had a front brake installed and that's about the only difference.
For Travis, who was one of the most skilled guys on a Motocross/Supercross track in the world, and probably the most accomplished freestyle rider in the world,---this jump was easy for him.
Yeah he made it look easy, he's the greatest motorcycle rider of all time. It's not that the jump is easy, it's that he's Jordan on a motorcycle.
He reminds me so much of Shawn White. LoL
Austin White okay random hater sitting in your mom's basement...

Legends never die!
Evel will live forever!
I cant believe Evel Knievel jumped this on a Triumph Bonneville 650 and nearly made it, no wonder he inspired legends like Travis and Robbie Maddison.
This isn't even close to the distance and level of difficulty of Evel Knievel's original jump.
It's cool and all but I've seen Pastrana do way crazier stuff than this.
s a m p l e t e x t We all have, but he paying homage to a legend
I used to watch Nitro Circus on mtv it was lit, and RIP to that guy who died a couple yrs ago, I forgot his name.
Yourbike Isnotalazyboy , no he isn't, dumbass. He's collecting a check from Indian. They're just using Evel's legacy to sell bikes. Open your eyes, ffs
J Bolo you don't know a single fucking thing
J Bolo you don't know Travis Pastrana if you really believe that. Travis has NEVER done this for money. He would have stayed racing if he did. He does Freestyle because he LOVES it. HE'S the reason it has become what it is now. They can make money from things like this NOW because of HIM.
Evel Kineval is the author of death defying Moro stunts. Of course he's inspired by him. He's probably not even making alot of money from this. Like I said, Travis has done far bigger things in much bigger stages. This isn't a cash grab. Did you see how many people were there? It ain't Fort Knox. He did this because he WANTED to
Travis always a 1st class athlete, sharing the spotlight with all his competition.
Thank you for honoring EK.
It's nice to see Travis chilling out a bit and having fun. That's a sick bike!
Didn't Robby do this in 1989 and it was a 150 foot gap between his ramps.
Yea he did
That landing was a hell of a lot longer then the one in the 60's.Not to mention all the new suspension technology on that bike. That bike was perfectly built for the jump.Well planned and executed and glad to see he made it.If travis was on his suzuki he would of double backflipped it.
great accomplishment BUT THERE WILL BE ONLY EVEL he jumped without test tracks computers custom built bikes JUST BIG BALLLS

Travis is incredible, I remember watching the double backflip as a kid, it shaped my life as an adult with now 10 years working in powersports, thanks Travis!!!
These ramps were definitely built better and that bike was definitely built better . I give Travis team major props for this jump
Knievel could of made that jump if he had a budget like Travis to make a HUGE landing ramp!

Awesome 👍, glad to see you give a tribute to the man himself, but also further your accolades in life, congrats.
Evel's son, Robbie, avenged his father's crash at Caesar's Palace and was the first to make the fountains jump successfully, so....
Gary wells didnt fare so well when he jumped the fountain and missed the landing ramp
@LindaStevensBZ But Robbie's was a longer jump to begin with, so he still jumped further than Evel or Travis.
Robbie only made it because there was a safety ramp that was there in case he came up short - which he did.

The Comedian with a smaller ramp
The Comedian yessss
Even Pastrana knew better than to use one of those cruiser bikes like Evel used to.
😌
And he will never be as well known as Evel for being a true daredevil
You crazy? the man has broken his body about as much as Evel, he's a racing legend, and did the first ever double backflip on a motorcycle. He redefined motorcycle stunts on a level comparable to Evel. They are both dare devils, but from different times. Pastrana is a more precise and calculated dare devil, but he's also broken half a million bones too. Pastrana is rather modest about his abilities.
He used a pretty basic flat track bike in the spirit of evil, suspension equivalent to a modern road bike with a third the travel of a dirt bike. Pastrana could do this on any motorcycle, but it would really be kinda silly on something less suitable.
Wow you seem to really know alot about Pastrana and absolutely nothing about Evel. Thanks for unnecessarily proving my point. Cheers!
Motorcycle Madness! Thxs. I Remembered, Cool!
because of the crazier stunts i've heard he has done made all these look easy! thank you for honoring the man!
I was here for all of this😍! He made it look really easy! But they picked the worst day to film it because it was humid and really hot and they ran out of water. It took hours to even get a smoothie at a food truck.
That was great, congrats to Travis! And it is weirdly cool, using retro tech to do it.
Sure, Category 7, retro styling would be more accurate, just that his Bell Star and four-inches of rear travel made me think retro tech, and c'mon, the whole vibe is retro so there you go. And I say that as a fan of Travis and Evel, and I got to see Evel do his thing at Ontario Motor Speedway in '71, his successful jump over 19 cars in the infield at a NASCAR race and all those long wheelies on the front straight and his cape flapping in the breeze. And my little thumbnail is sort of my homage to Evel, when I was one of those kids who wanted to fly like him on a Schwinn Sting-Ray.
Thanks, Category 7, and I am still a big fan of it all. And I'm still riding bikes at age 58, commuting to work every day on a mountain bike and sometimes wondering if my childhood friends are still riding theirs like we did back in the day when we kept scooting the ramps farther and farther apart. It was such fun to duel with them.
Robb Chastain yes. Now no one can say that its cuz he had a dirt bike like robbie did when he made the jump.
CATEGORY 7 The Indian Scout FTR750 Travis Pastrana rode is a dirt track race bike actually. it isn't fully custom, but it is modified.

Ok now trying doing the jumps on Evel's actual motorcycle, then I would be more impressed. Travis's bike is much more advanced and lighter weight than Evel's bike was.
No...this bike used was as EXACT a replica as they could get to the bike Evel used
No it isn't Andre, Travis was on a modern Indian 750, Evel jumped on a Triumph Bonneville. The Triumph probably weighed 50 or more pounds more and really did only have 4 inches of rear suspension travel. The Indian has more.
Would you like one back flip or two? :)
Do it on an XR using the same ramps Evel used and then I'll be impressed.
Duke Mantee not his fault evel didn't set up the stunt properly

His jumps were whatever for me. Pastrana used a much faster bike than evel did. Not only that, but the ramp for pastrana was much longer. It would have impressed me much more if Travis Pastrana did a double backflip over the fountains of Caesar's palace.
Tony Chavez actual he modeled that bike to be extremely similar to evils

Today's equipment made it look very easy because the ramps were bigger and the landing zone is much safer than before. And while that's not a bad thing it did make it appear boring. Oh well he did it anyway
If Gary Wells had used a landing ramp that wide, he wouldn't have been turned into a human pretzel that been stepped on. I'll never understand why he used that tiny little landing ramp.
Remember when Mike Metzger Backflipped over the fountains
