BYU was very fortunate. The correct play would have been to try the long field goal to win it.
Not at all... That kick was 60 yards and would've been into a strong wind. There's not a kicker in the NCAA that would make that kick. And BYU's kicker is already shaky outside of 40 yards with a career long of only 45. You have to go for the deep Hail Mary pass.
+Phil Cross There was some pretty crazy wind going against the throw. I can't imagine kicking it that far. BYU doesn't have the best kicker, but they have a quarterback with a crazy arm. Go Cougs!
+Phil Cross The longest kick in the NFL is 64 yards by Matt Prater. Good luck kicking 60 in college, into a strong wind nonetheless.
