Feeling Good - Nina Simone (1965)

- "Feeling Good" (also known as "Feelin' Good") is a song written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse for the 1964 musical "The Roar Of The Greasepaint-The Smell Of The Crowd" and has since been recorded by many artists, including Muse, Sammy Davis Jr., Bobby Darin, Traffic, Michael Bublé, The Pussycat Dolls, George Michael, John Barrowman, John Coltrane, Toše Proeski, Frank Sinatra Jr., and Adam Lambert. Perhaps the most famous version was recorded by Nina Simone, and first appeared on her 1965 album "I Put A Spell On You". Simone's version is also featured in the 1993 film "Point Of No Return", in which the protagonist uses the code name 'Nina' and professes to be a longtime fan of Simone's music. At least half the soundtrack for the film featured Nina Simone songs. The song was also featured in the promotional video of the TV series "Six Feet Under" (4th season), and is included in the show's volume 2 soundtrack. Additionally, Simone's version is also included in the 2006 film, "Last Holiday", in the 2010 film "Repo Men", appears as a background track in the 2009 game "The Saboteur" (despite the game taking place in Nazi-occupied Paris, long before the song was made), and is featured in the television series "Chuck" during the third season episode "Chuck Versus The Honeymooners". Eunice Kathleen Waymon (February 21, 1933 -- April 21, 2003), better known by her stage name Nina Simone, was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist. Although she disliked being categorized, Simone is most associated with jazz music. Simone originally aspired to become a classical pianist, but her recorded work covers an eclectic variety of musical styles that include classical, jazz, blues, soul, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. Her vocal style is characterized by intense passion, a loose vibrato, and a slightly androgynous timbre, in part due to her unusually low vocal range which veered between the alto and tenor ranges, occasionally even reaching baritone lows. Also known as 'The High Priestess Of Soul', she paid great attention to the musical expression of emotions. Within one album or concert she could fluctuate between exuberant happiness and tragic melancholy. These fluctuations also characterized her own personality and personal life, amplified by bipolar disorder with which she was diagnosed in the mid-1960s, something not widely known until after her death in 2003, though she wrote of it openly in her autobiography published in 1992. According to Nadine Cohodas, Simone's biographer, Ms. Simone was first diagnosed with multiple personality disorder and later with schizophrenia. Simone recorded over 40 live and studio albums, the greatest body of her work released between 1958, when she made her debut with "Little Girl Blue", and 1974. Her music and message made a strong and lasting impact on musical culture, illustrated by the numerous contemporary artists who cite her as an important influence. Several hip-hop musicians and other modern artists sample and remix Simone's rhythms and beats on their tracks. Many of her songs are featured on motion picture soundtracks, as well as in video games, commercials, and TV series. This channel is dedicated to the classic jazz music you've loved for years. Bless you for doing that! I was my Mother's caregiver for many years. I used to enjoy playing the songs that truly defined her life for her. She died on February 13th 2022 and I miss her every moment with every breath. Continue cherishing your sweet Mother 🥀
Tears in my eyes right now. That’s what this life is about; blessings ❤️

Is sad, very sad if anybody knows the history behind this masterpiece. So I learned this was wrote after a little 11 years old black girl was rape and kill by white racists assholes. After so much indifference back in the sixties, Nina decided to leave United States of North America and exile in France. After so much pain on her soul she opt to lie to her own conscience a wrote this unforgettable lyrics. She felt good.
NOBODY but NOBODY sings this song like NINA does!!!!!
I've never heard anyone else sing it. Lol
Matt Bellamy was pretty darn good

When this song came up during the movie «Perfect Days» (2023), it was so clear and even bright for me. Such a powerful one, and immediately one of my favorite songs ever. Love this tremendously.
I nearly broke down in the cinema 😢.

What a scene to close a beautiful movie. Exactly how we all know it is, a battle where hapiness and sadness coexist the whole time.

I discovered this song while I was learning how to walk and talk again after being blown up in Iraq 2007. I put it on my iPod and would listen to the song on the hard days when I was discouraged during the three years it took me to recover from my wounds.

What I’ve always loved and respected about Nina and other black singers of her time is that they didn’t let the racism of the era stop them from pursuing their dreams or becoming successful. They did what they loved and they did it with style, and they’re still revered to this day.
True!!!
Because racism doesn't cause all what BLM, media and some politicians are implying all tha time. Capitalism allows people that make the less mistakes possible to succeed. And if you are talented, with one or two good decisions is more than enough.
Tue but they also had a lot of issues. If it wasn't drug, it was alcohol, or something else.
I know you're trying to compliment these artists, but people don't "let" racism stop them, like it's a choice.
@@SoftwareAnalayst what
I saw Milly Jackson in concert in Oxford, England, and for some strange reason Nina Simone was in the audience, so Milly Jackson got her on stage and they sang a duet. You don't get many memories better than that!
How wonderful to be blessed with an experience like that. 🙏🏼
WOW!!!!! 😮😮😮
My mother passed yesterday at 6:15... It is now 7:25 and I heard this song as I'm sitting here crying...I didn't know who the singer was at first..then I googled it... And it's one of her favorite singers...I gave my second daughter Kamiyah the middle name Simone bc Nina Simone was on my mother's favorite singers. That was almost 18 years ago. Perhaps as I was writing my announcement and this song was playing is a sign. I do believe in signs..so did my mother.. I know she is still with me.. I just wish I could see, touch, and hear her again..but one day...I will be made whole again.. along with her and the rest of my friends and family that have passed before me..I love you mommy!
I hope you’re continuing to heal. I believe in signs too. This song represents the feeling of true freedom. I believe she was telling you that she’s “feelin good” in heaven. It’s a “a bew dawn. A new day. A new life” for her. Just like the lyrics say.
2020 still an icon, still extrodinary, still amazing, still the queen.

Sometimes music can be medicine.. can heal us.
Music has the power to change how we feel.
Once upon a time, I had built walls around my heart to protect myself. The walls were so high and so thick that you would think it was a fortress.
It worked. Nothing was getting in, also, nothing was getting out.
But then this song came on my headphones. Almost immediately, the music bypassed every defense and poked me right in the place where feelings lived.
You would have thought I was a baby, walking around with tears on my cheeks.
God bless you, Nina.
Sometimes a song is more than a song, and becomes a feeling. Music can move us, touch us, change how we feel. Music can be inextricably bound with our memories, and a song can bring back stuff from the past (just like a smell does).
Music can bring us together.
Wowa!

Nina Simone was not only an amazing singer, pianist, and performer - she was also a fantastic songwriter. Such a unique artist.
But she didn’t write this song
She was indeed........but she had nothing to do with this song which is down to the Brit genius of Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse
absolutely
@@brendangallagher8087 She didn't write the lyrics, but she deserves credit for singing them; fortunately, her voice sublimates this masterpiece.

This song describes the universal connection between all life and all energy on earth, the breeze, the fish, the river. We all have a common energy. And it feels good.
Sounds like a james bond music theme and IT'S JUST PERFECTION
Could be a James Bond song because Anthony Newley and Leslie bricusse who wrote this song also wrote the theme song for Goldfinger
Funny you should say. Michael Buble did a cover and the video for it is a parody of Bond films.

As a singer, 2:18 conveyed to me that she was feeling anything BUT good, but all she had was her music. I just cried tears like I knew her or something.
I hate when people make statements like "I hate modern music." Yes, 90% of modern music is crap, but 90% of music back then was crap too. The crap isn't remembered like the good stuff, so it feels like culture is in decline. People have been saying "The old days were better" since the dawn of time.

Her voice…her talent is ageless - Nina Simone
She was also a classically trained pianist. She attended Julliard. Her training brilliantly informs her performances.
One of the greatest songs ever made. A legend. A musical genius. Rest in paradise Ms. Simone ❤
Agreed… She’s wonderful… And she sure sings the heck out of this song!… And what a pianist she was. But she did not write it. The great Anthony Newley did. It comes from a Broadway show… 1964… The brilliant young Black singer, POWERFUL Gilbert Price 🏆 sang it - check him out on CZcams - unbelievable voice - his character finally becomes free at the end of the show. The song was written: about racism. ❤
