I remember Derby in the 1940s and 1950s. It had lots of beautiful buildings and was a pleasure to live in and I am horrified by what successive lots of politicians and "planners" have since done to it. The historic market place now has a "fountain" which strongly resembles a gents` urinal and there is an ugly concrete monstrocity called "The Assembly Rooms" which is totally unsuitable for such an historic setting. To add to the stupidity, large new shopping areas have been built away from where the main centre of town was, drawing customers away and leaving the existing shops such as Ranby`s, (later Debenhams), empty and closed. The place has been ruined and those responsible should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

It's a waterfall not a fountain, its called progress,

@@keithdeley7236 I seem to remember that when first switched on, water from this so called "waterfall" overflowed and ran into nearby shops. Was that "progress" too?

Assembly rooms were fine for the area, but that will be pulled down due to a fire about 5 years ago

Elsewhere, ex railway goods warehouses have been converted into highly desirable flats, the GNR depot has sat derelict for fifty years! St Mary's goods depot has had a lot of the listed buildings repurposed, so why not at Friargate? Leave it until it is unsafe, then apply for permission to demolish it. the same happened to Devonshire House at the old Royal Infirmary, that was an attractive building that had been made into offices and training facilities before the hospital closed, and could have been sold as was - part of it was also listed, but Morrison's wanted the site for a supermarket so it was flattened (having been trashed in the meantime). Needless to say, with the financial crash, the supermarket wasn't built so another bit of history was needlessly lost.

This breaks my heart. It’s like Derby is rotting away in front of our eyes.
Derby as i used to know it hasn’t been the same since Westfield/Intu was built.
I don’t even like going into Derby anymore. It’s such a sorry site.

Great vid, but really sad that these buildings and areas are just left to rot. The Hippodrome and the great northern bonded warehouse alone as a disgrace, left to fall down by thier owners hoping we wont notice.

  • @petersteer8865

The problem with the Hippodrome is that Blake Finance, who hold the right to sell in lieu of Anthony's (the developer who brought down the auditorium and stage house roofs in attempting to discover the construction of the auditorium roof in 2008) debt to them want at least 10 times the commercial valuation of the property. The Derby Hippodrome Restoration Trust have been able to get the commercial valuation money for the last 10 years but not ten times that amount!!

so sad , so much gone, all those thespians who trod the boards, the idea of theatre goes on and there will be more., but was it too far gone to save? Think of the history, and all of the steam trains coming and going , much cleaner and efffecient nowadays , i prefer that, but not quiet so romantic, if only the town council had more imagination, everything in cities has to be so big and domineering , no human scale. so alienating really. i only go to Notts and Derby when i have to.

This is what a city under disinfectant looks like. In a strictly woke, H&S and pc society there are no more entertainers which are any good, no more music worth listening to and therefore no more venues to promote this entertainment. People today confine themselves in their homes with the tele and content themselves with watching all the shite on it. Human interaction has been severely curtailed. It makes Orwell's 1984 look like the roaring twenties. Eventually all cities will be like this.
