Also, I am of the VERY firm opinion that the bibro finale is them trying to eat their cake and have it too (yes, the saying is switched around, I find it makes more sense this way).
They gave Destiel shippers a crumb with the confession, but they didn’t want to piss off the bibros by having it reciprocated. And they knew they couldn’t have Cas in the finale without it coming up, and if it came up and Dean went either way, it would piss one group or another off.
Which is why Cas is mentioned as being offscreen, but we never saw him. Which just ended up pissing us off anyway, and also managed to destroy one of the major themes of the show (that of found family being just as important as blood). Which pissed off more than just the Destiel shippers. And the fact that this bid thing happened, and you never mention it again? What?
So they pissed all but the hardcore bibros off (the ones who call Misha “Mushy”, and holy shit that is so disrespectful!). I’ve always thought that if all they want is a a show about Sam and Dean, they have the first three seasons. Though it wouldn’t have lasted longer than two without bringing in at least some interesting guest characters. Because a show with only two people as the focus gets very boring, very quickly.
And we know that the show runners and some writers are definitely eat their cake and have it too people, because of how long they q*eerbaited us. And I’m also still pissed off about the nepotism that allowed the worst writing team to stay on forever. I loathed Buckleming. I cannot think of a single episode of theirs I liked. And the only reason they stayed on is that Eugenie Ross-Leming is Bob Singer’s wife. Admittedly I’m biased- both Bob and Buckleming were notoriously anti Destiel.

You're seeing things that aren't there. Bro I'm cringing hard as fuck going down the rabbit hole of people talking about s15 and seeing that a lot of people LEGIT believe there's something between cas and dean when there just clearly isn't Idk what it is with the lgbt community always shipping and doing weird fanfic but Dean is clearly a straight af alpha male stereotype. Cas is. just cas. These dudes have been through hell and shit literally. Saying ily does not mean they're trying to be together. I'm sure there's plenty of occurrences in the military where two dudes who have fought through shit together have said they love each other because that just what happens. Even if you hate a squadmate you bond and are connected to them and care deeply for them because basic human survival.

@@maryellendesmarais6431 he may have said it was written that way but does what any of the writers say in the last like. 5 seasons matter? Because regardless whether or not its story or basic dialogue it was always poorly written. And if it WAS written that way then the dialogue and mishas acting did a terrible job of hinting it. I'm a dude. I know what its like to be friends with other dudes. It's different from how girls are. Probably a little offensive but a girl just wouldnt understand cues and shit between guys. Just like I dont understand how girls are like other girls do. If dean was a girl it still wouldnt make sense because the dialogue nor the acting nor even just the way the characters were written made sense for it. I honestly dont care that much but it's annoying seeing people trying to reflect themselves onto fictional characters so hard they beg the writers to make them gay or whatever. Happens with any media. Regardless though dean was written (especially since the CW took over) to be a stereotypical manly man. And ever since post CW hes been used for fish out of water comedy where a stereotypically old school guy is in a modern politically correct society. Gay jokes. Sexist jokes. Alcohol jokes. Food jokes. Very steretype male behavior. Just the way hes written at a basic level makes it not make sense and just in general nothing in the show hinted at dean reciprocating any type of feeling for cas. And regardless of who says what I dont think cas ever showed that interest. They always had a brothers bond through violence type vibe.

I want to say that it's not completely true that any who saw Diestiel hetero and platonic all the way beyond the love confession won't be convinced by this video: because I was.
I watched the whole show, even argued with the shippers, viewing the pair as completely platonic. I rolled my eyes at the Tumblr posts, the "there's no hetero explanation for this" content I saw plastered across the internet after every interaction.
I've followed this show close to the very beginning. On and off at points, but followed nonetheless. I explained away the love confession through hetero goggles and even groaned because I knew what the Destiel shippers would say.
Then I watched/listened to this while working one day, and my mind completely changed. Suddenly, I saw everything. I even felt the same retroactive disappointment for how hard the ball got dropped.

Yes, he’s said “we love you” and even said “I love you” to Sam, but the first was referring to him and Sam, and the second was right before he permanently died. For Dean to say “I love you” in a romantic way is too out of character and he’d probably never say it because he hates himself. I’m not saying it would be bad if he did say it, it would just feel really weird to hear him say it to anyone in a romantic sense.

@@Johnnysmithy24 I know this is a bit of an old comment, but I’m going to point something out to you anyway. I assume from the way you phrased your comment that you’re straight. If I’m mistaken, then I apologize. However, people are “obsessed with sexual orientation” because it’s representation. Straight relationships are plastered EVERYWHERE in media. Literally. Everywhere. All the time. But! There are people who aren’t straight. So, it’s only logical that they would want some representation in media to validate the fact that they are indeed normal and not alone. It also just helps with general acceptance. If more people see more mainstream non-heterosexual relationships that are treated normally, then it helps, for lack of a better term, normalize it. People (mostly homophobes) complain that any gay content they see is “an agenda being shoved down their throats” (not quoting you here, obviously; just a double standard/contradictory thing I’ve noticed) but don’t seem to realize that heterosexual content is in 99% of the media that they consume. This reply isn’t meant to be hostile or anything of that nature. Simply meant to inform and educate.

    • @Johnnysmithy24
      @Johnnysmithy24 Před 2 lety

@@averylouise1024 Hello, thank you for the kind tone. I don’t have a problem with having gay characters in stories, my favorite show even has a several episodes arc about a character who is found to be gay. I have a problem with taking existing characters, with an existing special iconic friendship, and turning it into a gay romantic relationship when 1- Everything about them previously known disregards that idea(in the case of Dean who is the straightest man you can ever find, I understand Cass has no gender) and 2- There is absolutely no point for doing that in the story, it adds absolutely nothing to their characters other than follow an agenda
Dean is not gay or bisexual, and that is more than obvious. Cass while genderless, is not a human and shouldn’t experience romance in the same way humans do. What they have is a special relationship, an emotional connection, and there’s no reason why Cass should perceive it in a romantic or sexual way at all, when it can be perfectly understood in the form of a friendship, which is MORE THAN CLEAR is what Dean has always chosen to have with him. The tropes and inside jokes of couples that they used were just that, jokes, because of how close they are it’s supposed to make people laugh, not claim that they are secretly gay. What they did is almost insulting because it is like claiming that you can’t have a special bond like that without it being romantic. I myself have bonds like that with some of my best friends of all time, and we even make the typical inside joke of “hey you’re cheating on me” when we hang out too much with someone else because we are self aware of how we’re always together all the time. That’s what they are, they are jokes.
And lastly, for the fans of the show who know these characters as friends, it’s extremely weird and annoying to have them be lovers, cause that’s not how we perceive them, since that’s not what they were intended to be. And it ruins our perception of them, and makes it feel like cheap fan service
If this was a story about toxic masculinity or denial or sexuality for example, and the point of the characters was to turn out to be gay, to make a point and contribute to the themes, then I would see no problem with it, but it’s not. It adds nothing to their character and yet they shove it in your face like it’s so important, which makes it feel like an agenda
If people want inclusion(that isn’t forced or constantly brought everywhere), then just make original gay characters who are just gay because that’s who they are, from the beginning without big deal, and not because they’re trying to go along with a fanfic or an agenda. If you’re trying to make a story about some people suddenly finding out their sexuality, then do it in a romance or teen drama show where it fits and it’s just another story, if you want to make a commentary on homosexuality themes, then create a story that focuses on that. None of these things are the case of Supernatural, so yea it pisses me and other people off

On the topic of Dabb, I honestly believe he used destiel during his era as q*eer bait. Although he gave the "go ahead" to a lot of great destiel centric episodes, he said (during an interview which aired before the final episode) that about 30% of people would like the finale (aka bibros). To me, this seems like he's entirely aware of the effect the semi-cannon portrayal of destiel would appear, yet he did nothing to solve that issue except blame it on covid. He's also said before in interviews that he doesn't like working with Jensen, and that Misha was "disposable." Although they came off as sarcastic during the interviews, people pointed out that Jensen had unfollowed Dabb from most of his accounts, yet he continued to follow the other writers, producers, etc. Plus, Jensen has voiced his original opinion on the finale many times and said he was basically told "take it or leave it." That's not to say that Dabb was the one saying that, but it's likely he could be grouped in with the other execs Jensen tried to appeal to. You'd think that the writers would listen to their lead actor of 15 years when he brings up a point like this, but apparently not. Again, this is entirely my opinion I just thought it was some interesting information :) Amazing video, you're seriously doing the lords work!!!

@@trubb1e sorry I should have worded that better. When Jensen first heard about the finale he didn’t like it. He’s told this story in a few interviews, but basically he and Jared sat with the writers to hear the finale and he said he left feeling a little on the fence about it, but didn’t really know what to say to a group of people who wrote the script (and obviously liked it). So he talked to the writers about it and they pretty much said “take it or leave it” and that he was “too close/involved in it.” Eventually, he ended up talking to Eric Kripke (the show creator) about his feelings towards the ending and Eric explained to him how it would be “good tv” or wtv. Thank you so much for making an essay on this topic from the perspective of a current, unironic fan because many aspects cannot be fairly judged by an outsider. Judging Dean's reaction from an outsider's perspective isn't very fair because like you said, one of his biggest and most consistent character traits is being slow to process and except emotion most likely due to long term trauma. Not only this, but Dean has *never* once in the entire show been shown this much non physical/superficial affection completely divorced from the context of simply being better than someone crappy or being needed. This is a trait that's rarely represented (correctly that is) in media because, as this situation demonstrated, its not very viewer friendly to casual or first time audience members. I really admire Jensen's choice to hold true to his character rather than go with the reaction that would communicate the easiest visual shorthand.

i watched the show on and off, my husband was the actual fan and so i never really saw the full story and i wasnt really interested in all the action and monsters. I liked Cas and I liked Dean because they had great funny and cute scenes but i never caugth the narrative because i'd mostly be listening and not watching while it was on. I caught the gay jokes but thought it was just another show doing gay jokes about straight guys🙄 . then the last season came out and i told my husband to wait for me because i wanted to really see it and see how it finally ends, will God come back? what happens to jack? what about crowly.... and then the ending was so odd. like there seemed to be more there than i could understand like,...the last scene seemed too emotional and i felt like i was missing something like why did cass say that? why did he look at him that way? like i dont get it...and then i saw a youtube recommendation that was about "destiel" and realized, oooooohhhhh thats why! i had to start the show over and watch the whole thing by myself. there is no way there isnt a romance story here. Now that i looked at how they looked at each other or how they reacted to most of the jokes, that played out exactly like other tv shows where they are leading up to a romance. sooo many scenes are contrasted with other relationships and topics about being gay. i think a big part of why many people didn't realize this IS because, a lot of people, especially straight dudes may be watching more for the fights and the monsters. I showed my husband certain scenes and he just didn't remember them or he wasn't paying attention to the relationships but he can recall all the fights and the details about the lore. now that i've shown him these big scenes and my brother started watching it again, they can't NOT see it. its there.

You had me completely enthralled from the very beginning. I didn't expect to be so enraptured, but damn me if I wasn't glad I was! This has to be one of my penultimate examples of a video essay. It felt like you did the show so much justice, and almost paid it homage in a way by gifting everyone who views this with a brilliant analysis. A love letter to a show both a tragic failure and a resounding masterpiece that broke a heart (SPN felt that way to me) It's humorous, empathetic, gentle, straightforward, and not afraid to critique what needs to be. I'm amazed, seriously love this. Certainly going to share it around a lot, even to non-spn fans lol. It's just that good.

I still feel the confession was kind of homophobic. It was still ambiguous, which is why most of the fandom who are not destiel shippers don't even read it as a romantic love confession. They just see it as Cas telling his best friend that he loves him in an emotional, yet platonic way. And yes, I hear the line, "The one thing I want is the one thing I know I can't have", and I agree it's suggestive of romantic feelings, but then again, I'm gay and a destiel shipper. For people who aren't, they probably need a little more hand holding to get there, especially considering the show's long history of writing this relationship the way they did, but never taking the next logical step, all while telling destiel fans that they're "delusional". The rest of the fandom heard those messages too. Straight confessions of love are rarely this ambiguous. Even if they're unrequited, they either use unmistakable wording, eg. "I'm in love with you" rather than just, "I love you", or the reaction of the person being confessed to tells you that this is being received as a romantic confession of love. A kiss, or attempted kiss, a returned declaration or an "I love you, but not like that". You can't really use the "Dean didn't have time to process his emotions" excuse. Dean is not a real person, and this was not a real situation. It was written by the writers, and if Dean didn't have time to react, that's because the writers deliberately wrote it that way. They could have written it so that the Empty didn't come until Dean did have time to react. They chose to write it that way specifically so they wouldn't have to show Dean's reaction. Once again, they were trying to have their cake and eat it too. They didn't want it to be obvious to ALL fans of the show that this was a romantic confession because they feared the backlash of those fans that might be homophobic (the show may have ended, but there's still lots of money to be made off of it). Meanwhile they feared the backlash of the destiel portion of fandom enough that they felt they had to do something. This was the result. This doesn't mean that no part of it can be affirming for lgbt fans or destiel shippers, but it's still a problematic resolution to a longstanding "q-wordbaiting" problem. And Cas dying and getting hauled into a place of eternal torment directly after confessing his romantic gay love, as a direct result of that love, is still "bury your gays", even if fans knew it was coming. Fans knowing that a harmful trope is happening doesn't make it not harmful. Part of the reasons why these tropes are harmful are not just how they play to lgbt audiences, but how they play to straight audiences as well. Anything that confirms or bolsters the homophobic views of straight people that gay people and the love they feel is somehow othering, and deserving of punishment, is harmful. Not to mention that many people will obviously read it as a gay unrequited love situation that was so hopeless for Cas that he couldn't experience any true happiness that wasn't loving Dean, and basically decided to die because he couldn't be loved by this one person, which is actually a whole other harmful gay trope.

Yes! Yes! Yes! This is more than an open ending, it's trying to please everyone and the result is that no one is satisfied. They did wrong by a lot of characters that got thrown to the side withouth a second glance. But Castiel was there since season 4 and his story deserved a better conclusion than just a remark "oh, he's here in heaven too". Show, don't tell. And the story demanded a reaction from Dean. I love how you pointed out that they used "i love you" instead of "i'm in love with you". Indead it's also a more ambiguous wording. I can say "i love you" to my best friend. Cas sacrifices himself and no more mention, nothing. Show a little more, even if it's to hint more heavily on the friend side.

Exactly. Thermian argument. It doesn’t matter what the in universe explanations could be, the fact is that it was written that way by real people, with that intention. And I also agree that it was still (and possibly the worst) qu**rbaiting.
But I do think that if one of them were a woman, the straights wouldn’t be clinging on to “but it’s ambiguous!” Because we all know that the hets are not only oblivious, they’re wilfully so.
How many X files fans called Mulder and Scully shippers “delusional”? Or Booth and Bones shippers? It doesn’t happen.

@@katherinemorelle7115 I mean, I do agree that if either Cas or Dean were a woman, they would pretty much be an acknowledged ship, and probably canon as well. But they aren't, and I don't feel you can really divorce them from the context they're in. It is an mlm ship, and on a show that spent a very long time gaslighting the entire fandom about the fact that they were purposely writing it into the show, q-baiting or not. Given that, the confession would need to be a lot more specific to really land as a romantic love confession for all fans. But like I said, they didn't want it to land for all fans, that seems clear.
Mulder and Scully are actually an interesting comparison, because as someone old enough to have actually watched that show, their "romance" is actually fairly ambiguous for most of the show. It isn't until later seasons that any overt romance between them is confirmed. Of course, that didn't stop people from shipping them from the jump. There were people who didn't ship it, and some did say that people were reading too much into their interactions and that the relationship was meant to be platonic. But honestly, prior to season 6 or 7, most of their interactions absolutely could be read as merely platonic. Certainly they didn't have nearly as many romantic coded moments as Dean and Cas did. Now, was there the outright hostility towards early Scully/Mulder shippers that there always was towards Dean/Cas shippers? No. I think we all know that came from the homophobia of some of the producers and writers (and even Jensen at times) and the homophobic side of fandom. There's also the side of fandom that saw Dean/Cas as a threat to what they valued most about the show, which was the relationship between Sam and Dean, the "brothers only" status quo, "wincest", etc.
Bones and Booth (another show I watched), is maybe a less apt comparison, because the romance in that show was always extremely overt. From literally the first episode it was textually acknowledged that Booth and Bones had some kind of romantic interest in each other. It was a slow burn, but everyone knew about the fire. It wasn't confined to subtext in the way that Dean and Cas' romantic story was.
The hets ARE oblivious. But the spn writers are certainly aware of this and were using it to their advantage to hide their q-baiting and gaslighting. They knew as long as they didn't just come right out and say it, that they'd always be able to point at destiel shippers and call them crazy if any backlash from straight homophobic fans arose. They're literally still doing this. There has been, to my knowledge, absolutely no acknowledgment by anyone who works on the show in an official capacity (The CW, WB, producers, writers, etc.), that the confession was a romantic confession and that Cas is canonically lgbt. The only person who has confirmed that is Misha. They're happy to let him take the heat, without backing him up at all. This also lets them get away with the "bury your gays" thing because they can always play dumb and be like "what do you mean? bury your gays? who said Cas was gay? not us. :)"

    • @katherinemorelle7115
      @katherinemorelle7115 Před 3 lety +11

@@luminousmoon86 I think you’re right that they tried to make it still within the realm of deniability. Deniability for the wilfully oblivious hets, at least.
They do seem to be very much eat their cake and have it too type people. Which is why Cas was only mentioned as being offscreen. If he appeared in the finale, they’d have to address it one way or the other, and they didn’t want to do that.
      Fence riding all the way!
And the fact that straight ships receive less homophobic denial was my point. Would a female Cas and Dean have been canon? Yes. We know that for a fact, because the “female Cas” role was originally Anna, who was most definitely an explicit love interest for Dean.
I guess, as a gay, I’m just disappointed and frustrated with how homophobic it all is. Mostly frustrated. And also angry. And there’s certainly a strong (though not 100%) correlation between being straight and denying any romantic tropes ever existed, and being qu**r and at the very least seeing those tropes (even if they personally didn’t ship them). There’s a reason for that.
I also think that the writers knew damn well what they were doing by the end of season 4. I don’t think it was an accident by that point. There were also plenty of jokes about Dean’s possible sexuality (most of which went straight over the hets’ heads) going back to season 1. Were they only ever supposed to be jokes? Probably. But that’s an issue in and of itself.

      @mediabuzzkill  Před 3 lety +3

All of the 15x19 scenes we've seen absolutely should've stayed in. I think that they decided to cut them out for a couple different reasons, but one main one intersects: they wanted to trick us into thinking this was a happy ending. They couldn't show them mourning Cas too much because they weren't going to get him back. They couldn't show Jack grieving his father and mother because it made it too obvious that 1. It made no sense that he didn't immediately bring Cas back at the end of the ep 2. That he was a child that should've have had to literally take on the weight of the world. They couldn't show them listing off the names of all the people they lost because it made it way too obvious that this is tragic, that they have lost nearly everyone and they shouldn't just be driving off into the sunset after that. They couldn't show the hints towards Dean's resentment of John in both the Michael scene and him first-naming him at the end because it was supposed to be happy that his father is right down the road from him. All of those scenes would've added more emotional depth to the characters we know and love and would've given a bit more respect to Castiel, but they would've poked too many holes in their desired ending. Which just further shows you that the ending sucked.

Back when Dabb said that only 30/40% of fans would like the end and it'd be like Game of Thrones, everyone thought he was joking because that show had just ended and got terrible backlash... but he wasn't kidding at all. They could have gone in so many different directions, and why ep20 needed to even happen at all after the way 19 ended I will never understand. Every time I think about how bad the end was (which is a lot) I just get even more angry about and then it makes me sad because I hate the ending to my favorite show and then I get mad again. Look. People can be gay and they can be not gay on a tv-show. That's okay. But hinting at something so that more viewers get hooked on your show, and even playing into the ship by having scenes where the two characters are very evidently not behaving entirely platonic, is basically showrunners eating their cake while they still can and playing and disrespecting audiences who were very invested in that ship and also had high hopes, hopes that the talents behind the show had INTENTIONALLY CONTRIBUTED TO, hopes that weren't there without very valid reasons. And the worst part is, doing so and then trying to gaslight the audience into thinking that they are a bunch of weirdos who just want to watch people of the same-sex hook up like some sex-crazed perverts as if they themselves didn't ENCOURAGE THAT SHIP, albeit not openly. This is exactly what happened with Supernatural. And let's just say it- had a fandom made a heterosexual ship that they really believed in (whether or not the show eventually pursues it), nobody in the show would give as disgusted reactions as they give to "made up" LGBTQ+ ships.
P.S - It is mind-blowing how many people just came here to type "destiel is not a thing", despite the fact that it is so evident that they did not even watch the video.

Or, if they do, they don`t show it and pretend to be led by higher purpose (like when they risk the whole world to save each other, but in the end it appears to be for the best for the cause). So, until the fight is over, they can`t be together. Although, as we see in those 15 seasons, as long as they live, the fight is NEVER really over. So they can be together after death.

As said in this video, for Dean, after Castiel was introduced and in the show for a few seasons he sort of replaced any female love interest Dean would have. Although, Dean doesn’t see their relationship like that, Cas is still the most important person in his life other than Sam. The show is about brother hunters, and all of the women in the show want them to quit hunting and then there would be no show. @@trubb1e Don’t agree. Jo would not have wanted Dean to quit hunting- she’s a hunter herself. Lisa was perfectly fine with Dean hunting, he was the one who stuffed that up. If they’d fleshed Bela out into a proper love interest, she’d have been okay with hunting, and might have switched to it herself.
Not one of Dean’s female love interests would have made him quit. Not one.

    Can I just-
Y’all know how in 11x11 Mildred told Dean he was obviously pining for someone.
But- Amara was obviously ‘into’ Dean (?) and even kissed him so he couldn’t be pining for her since she reciprocated his love (If it was love idk I literally just watched 11x11 lol).
In my book that can only mean one thing.
He was pining after someone else, and that someone else may or may not have been Castiel (of course it was him, who else could it be???)
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk, see you in the next comment section :)

thank you so much for making this video! it annoys me so much when people who don't watch the show/haven't watched it in years are making videos about this and immediately jumping to conclusions. they're taking scenes out of context to make them seem different than they actually are.

Just wanna thank you for actually knowing what you're talking about. Other videos/reactions to Destiel and 15x18 have been so clearly made by people who didn't watch the show or understand a lot of the behind the scenes/fandom dynamics of the entire 15 year ride, and it really showed in not only their flippant and borderline hateful tone, but in the information they presented in their video and the context in which they presented the info. Thank you so much for making this video, I EAGERLY await your second part!

Destiel got me into fanfic and tumblr, it ruined my life basically (Not going to mention the role of Glee because I've been taught by society to be ashamed of that).
I gave up on this show in season 9 but remained invested on whether Destiel would ever become cannon and this huns was shocked and appalled!

amazing. loved this so much it summed up my thoughts completely as an active fan of the show throughout the last few seasons. people who didn't know about all of the other things going on made assumptions and accusations that were hurtful not just towards fans and shippers, but towards the actors as well so thank you for bringing it the attention it deserves

Thank you for putting this together! I’m a new fandom and only started watching because of the confession scene and after entering the fandom and hearing all of the history, I’m so SO glad I didn’t go through all of it cause I would have been just as livid as everyone else. I’m only on season 9 now and Destiel is definitely the clearest romantic pairing that has been written. It’s actually insane!

This was such a treat to watch and relive! As a long time fan who's been on this ride right along since the start, words cannot express how satisfying it is to see this discussed with nuance and respect for once, something that former fans/non fans who are only engaging with the commentary for clout cannot do (and apparently don't even seem to try to do!). Thank you so much for your hard work on this and can't wait for part 2!
