    Loved the insight Simon and bringing in other pros for perspective was a dynamite idea! For future videos it would be cool to here some lessons you’ve learned playing tournaments. What divisions to start with, when it’s time to move up and even some tough times that taught you valuable lessons about tournament play. Thanks for all you do and good luck in the 2020 season 👍

    Next question being form: how does one ensure keeping the nose down when throwing a disc? I've struggle with this amd is robbing a bit of distance off my throw

    • @kurtheilman3809
      @kurtheilman3809 Před 4 lety +2

      Mitchell Crowley #99507 not a pro by any means but I’ll weigh in... usually it’s caused by your “pull back” angle being off. If your arm is set too high during pullback it causes a dipping motion during the throw resulting in a nose up release. Slow down your “pullback” and focus on keeping your arm at a consistent height through the throw and follow through.

    • @satagaming9144
      @satagaming9144 Před 4 lety

      I also throw way too nose up, I think it's because of weight shift issues as well (a throw from the back foot) as reach-back problems. Look up Danny Lindahl, his channel is really valuable for these sorts of things.

    Thanks for the video Simon. I look up to you in this great sport, but I find it difficult to find opportunities to be the person for someone else in my community. Obviously I'm no pro, I'm a 929 rated player (not happy with that rating at all) but I want to be influencial. I want to bring new players in and try to teach because I know I can. I've put the work in and have the skills, the hard part is finding people who want to learn, and who are coachable. Nobody wants to be coached by someone who isn't sponsored and has no claim to fame and that is where my struggle is. I'd love to reach out to Discmania about running clinics and courses at schools but the interest level where I am is close to zero... No one wants to play disc golf here and it's tough to build that interest. Got any advice for that? Also, I apologize for the super long comment, if you read this far, thanks!

  • @BSBochantinUpshot
    @BSBochantinUpshot Před 4 lety

    I run a small mobile vendor disc golf company (B.S. Bochantin Upshot) and in 2020 I sponsored 10 players. The players I chose were all unique and were all helpers in years past to several of my events. Some other players (friends of my sponsored) were asking how can they get sponsored and its everything said above. He unique, be helpful, be known. I know lots of players that I see at many events but I would never sponsor even if they were 1000 rated, its about being seen repeatedly serving the community. This can also be done via social media. If you took a poll of your local area and asked everybody the top movers and shakers in the area; if your not on that list then do something to be known by your area as an influencer. High ratings is the icing on the cake, but if the cake sucks then the rating alone will not be enough.

      @darkenedpsynoid Před 3 lety

      Yeah but we actually don't know how much money these Pros spend traveling from one tournament to another All Over America and in my mind these people were just born into money because there's no way in hell that you're able to pay for gas money to travel all over the US and if you're going to take a train or airplane ride it still is going to cost you a lot of money that's the first hurdle second one is lodgings unless you're making friends all over America and whenever you're in their area and they say Hey you can crash here that's fine but that might not happen all the time and you're probably are going to have to either pitch up in your car or spend good money to stay at a hotel/motel which is the second hurdle, the third and final one is food obviously you need some intake to stay energized, focused feeling great and food cost a good amount of money so when you're on tour and on the road you're more unlikely eating take-out instead of home-cooked meals so that's going to cost a lot......... I really wonder how these Pros are able to financially keep up touring all year every year........ I mean I understand if a Pro's actually winning tournaments the money that they're making is obviously going to go towards the next tournament or food lodgings gas money but with Pro players who don't have that privilige and actually have to work a full-time job and aren't really able to get time off for tournaments is straight-up a buzzkill because we want the ability to tour just as much as professionals do 24/7......... I mean we all want it the same there is no gap.......... of course disc golf is getting more attention therefore it's probably going to get more expensive it seems like to partake in tournaments I mean some of the national tour events cost hundreds of dollars to partake which is ridiculous......... basically I'm just venting about how shitty it is for a pro player to want to tour with the disc golf pro tour and not have the means to do so because of financial matters........ I just love how certain people are born into this world with more privilege than others and when I mean by privilege I mean born into money because nowadays you need money in order to do anything and if you don't have it you don't have the privilege to do so........ what all the pro players said about getting a sponsor that's so much more easier said than done I know that's obvious but they really didn't go into depth about how to get a sponsor they just said the simpler stuff....... I know for a fact there's a lot more that goes on behind-the-scenes to get a sponsor than what the pros said........

    What I want to know is how to keep improving in the sport I love so much - What do you do to prep and practice for a big event? How do you practice the course? What do you do physically and mentally to prepare yourself the days leading up to the big day? How much time do you spend throwing the day before? The elite disc golf pros get contacts for a couple years or whatever the agreement is. It varies so much. Paul McBeth got 2 million for a 2 year contract from Discraft (or something like that) plus winnings, plus sales. An average pro might only get free travels and free discs and tournament win cash. That’s my understanding, I could be way off!

    NEXT BIG TOPIC... when should I call out someone on my card for violating a rule? Every tournament I play there are always guys who fall forward inside the circle or pick up there disc and throw it in without marking it or step on their mini while throwing or putting and I'm always battling whether or not to call them out. If I call them out everyone on the card automatically sees me as a bad guy or someone who is being a stickler or just some guy who isn't having fun. Typically I let the first one or two slide and then I will kindly mention it to them and might let it slide again but at the end of the day they repeat the same fouls over and over but I'm a nice person and don't want to be the type that calls out every person for every foul I see. But at the same time and intermediate and advanced I feel like they should know the rules so I'm always battling mentally what to do. It would be nice to have some inside from you and from other Pros on what should the average person do? What have you experienced with this? Do the people you remember that called you out on a violation have a bad reputation for calling everyone out? What is your Insight? Thank you Simon!

    • @erkierkierki
      @erkierkierki Před 4 lety

      Just be nice about it. Explain the rules in a calm way, and then let it be. Most people will try to fix their issues, if they're serious about the game. You will see them make these faults again, but from my own experience - it's just because you can't change a habit in 2 seconds.

    Are there any professionals who are proficiently ambidextrous in their game? I started as a righty about 11 years ago and had to retrain to play lefty, I play better as a lefty now. However, I also do control shots as a righty. (Flicks and thumbers, I can't do righty backhand.)

      I'd say if you are proficient with a righty backhand and forehand the benefits of being ambidextrous in play isn't super helpful. If you can't forehand to save your life, but can backhand with both right and left handed then I feel like that's really nice. I know that didn't answer your question, but all of that to say is most pros are either proficient with both backhand and forehand, or really work on angle release and disc selection for a right hand back hand that finishes right.

      @@crabtime2116 I understand this. It's strongly about control by proficiency in the end. Although, having ambidextrous capabilities have done wonders for my scrambles, let alone the flick putts that have given me birdies. I still figure ambidextrous playing is a factor that will push the envelope in this sport.

    Loving the content! Don't want to be the person that asks the 'dumb' question here but what exactly is a 975 rated player? or a 1020 rated player.
    Cheers,

      Each round you play gets a rating based on how you scored compared to the competition. A stroke is typically worth 10 rating points. The average of your round ratings becomes your player rating. A 1020 rated players is scoring several strokes better each round than a 970 rated player. Check out PDGA . Com for more info

    Simple enough, it's like dating. Introverts don't get noticed, extroverts do. Also, most things that would help you court SOMEONE, will likely help you court a SPONSOR.
    Side note, bring more Combine events to MICHIGAN! Thanks bud

      if we talk about Disc related sponsors... maybe you're right. if we talk about companies outside of Disc... not so sure. many brands would like to get a 1st step into it with a minimal engagement. the thing is not to be a gluton. know where your level is at. don't ask too much and let it grow.
