Exact same issue with a 2018 Frigidaire unit. There’s a galvanized steel bracket supporting the aluminum coils that has corroded. Water condenses on the cold steel so it's constantly wet so the galvanization breaks down & the steel corrodes pretty quickly. If I ever buy another the first thing I'll do is pull the cover & check for that steel bracket & return it if it has one. Steel will be highly magnetic so that's an easy way to test it. This is the very definition of planned obsolescence.
i also go two 2018 Frigidaire, both of them not getting water at all, very frustrated .
Helped me to just pull that back cover off. Saved me from brute forcing the front off first. Thank you
Thank you for the video. Mine stopped working so I will now go pull it apart and look for residue.
I was able to follow along with confidence as you went on. I am ready to attempt fixing mine. Thanks
I think you are correct I purchased a 70 pint GE with a built-in sump and after watching your video I tore into mine and found the exact same issue. Pretty pissed off beings that this damn thing was $400. It’s only three years old I got it from Home Depot and despite the warranty, I purchased through Home Depot because the electronics and circuitry on the top of this unit made me nervous - they will not replace it as it is “no longer sanitary to do after the pandemic“ I am posting this September 2023 and I am not saying that the pandemic is over by any stretch of the imagination, but I will never purchase another big ticket item from Home Depot or use one of their warranties more so ever again…
thanks you saved me a bunch of time I will never get back..off to the next thing on my list.
I watch videos here in youtube about reliability of newer apliances like dehumidifiers. Majority of them afail in a span of 1-3yrs for lots of issues.
I also watch vintage or classic dehumidifiers and saw how amazingly reliable they are and what I did is I bought a 1980 Hitachi made in Japan dehumidifier and its like new no rust and noise.
But your plan to buy the same model for having a spareparts is a smart idea.
Thanks for saving me an hours work and frustration . Throwing mine away lol.
@@motofun72 wow that's bad luck ... I bought 2 cheap ones at Walmart and they are on year 3 ... The broken one was free... Now I know why 🤣😂 thanks again!
Thank you for this. I have nearly the same model and am experiencing the same problem. I've contacted GE, but have not heard back. I think I'll just buy a new one and save the hassle.
I would keep trying all different phone numbers and emails you can get your hands on. Eventually, you’ll find someone who will send you a new unit for free.
The problem is that your new de-humidifier will fail at the same places, so the "spare parts" plan will end up with two failed humidifiers, each with the same problem. Mine failed the same way, and the compressor wouldn't run anymore. When I saw the pile of rust fall out I knew that it was over for that one.
Thanks for posting this! I have this same dehumidifier but mine is the 20 pint version. I don't use mine a lot though, so I'm not sure if I'll have this issue, I'll keep a eye on it though.
Good luck with yours. In theory, they are all the same. Thanks for watching. Help me by subscribing!
Great , I have the GE 50pint and it recently started doing the same thing. Damnit looks like I’m buying a new one.
It suck. My “new one” died at 11 months old. At least they replaced it, but still.
ANOTHER OPTION TO SAVING THE OLD ONE FOR SPARE PARTS: My local utility will pay between $25 and $50 for old fridges and dehumidifiers. Not sure why, but it worked great to get rid of an ANCIENT (1950's or 40's era) fridge that was in our basement. The utility company crew wrestled it out of the basement for me and gave me a $50 check on top of that. The amount of the check depended on the size of the appliance so a dehumidifier would probably be at the $25 end of the range for check amounts.
I have a newer 50pt. pump model that is rusting and plugging the drain and the drain hose connector. Now I need to empty the bucket because the pump is plugged/stuck.
I have two 70qt GE models that were both bought in 2017 and it appears that both have stopped collecting water at almost the same time. Seems like 4-5 years is max you'll get out of these GE units. Guess I try a new brand next time. I had a Westinghouse model that also lasted about the same prior to these.... so who knows.
Well, my “new” GE just died (10 months old). They are giving a goodwill check, but I have to buy another GE. I will soon have a boneyard of these thing.
I agree 4 years max. My avg now is 2 years. 👎🏻
Except I had same issue but pieced the copper and proved it by was charged. In my case corrosion was bad but not the issue
Thx for posting. My GE is about 3yrs old. It runs for about an hour then shuts off. I’ll attempt to pull it apart. Wanted to ask, Did you see a filter anywhere?
Ive had 2 GE brands and neither has lasted more than about 4 years. That is real disappointing since the 50 pint versions are about $250 here in Ak. I bought a Tosot about 2.5 to 3 years ago. It comes apart for cleaning a lot easier, which is important for me since I have a lot of animals and the hair plugs things off quickly. It is still running strong and was a slightly cheaper than GE. I also just had to replace a GE for another home and since this was a last minute issue that came up, I had to go with what was available at that moment - a Toshiba. I hope it is better than GE.
Good to know. I may look at a toshiba, next time. We all know there will be a next time. 🙄
@@motofun72 Try a Tosot first (yes its spelled correctly). Its been running strong for almost 3 years. The jury is still out on the toshiba. Only had it 2 weeks so far.
@@motofun72 go for honeywell i read their build quality is good. GE has a bad reputation in fridge ac and dehumidifiers because they are veey cheaply made. Mine died in 2 1/2 years though my basement is only 700sqft with no water but gets humid when it rains. I suspect the same issue though i bought HD extended warranty and it did not help. I will take it appart after fighting with HD anf GE.
@@shariqkudcs the extended warranty didn’t help??? The last one I bought was from Walmart and I bought the extended warranty for two extra years, so I hope it’s covered, when it dies. We all know it will die in 1-3 years!!
I took 8 screws out just wanted back off something caught in fan. Have to remove and see how it remove cover!
Just followed this video to take a look a mine…same issue smh. I bought this used off FB marketplace so I guess “it is what it is”…
So do you recommend yearly self maintenance on these and clean up any residual rust build up before this happens?
I don’t know if there’s anything we can do. I think it rusted from Freon leaking, but that’s a guess.
@@motofun72 Well, looks like I’m replacing mine. I got 4-5 years out of it.
@@Mr.Martini549 wow, 4-5 years. That’s awesome. I bought extended warranty for like $20. I figured it will be dead under 2 years.
Buy the extended warranty , “insurance policy”. GE mine lasted less than a year. But didn’t need to use it till 13 months. I contacted them and waiting on response. Looks like same model.
If anyone knows a good, reliable brand please share. I had a GE that failed like this, then I had a Emerson that wouldn't shut off when the tank filled, now I have a Honeywell that keeps freezing up. They're all 3-5 year junk these days. None of them last.
I didn't get much more than a year. Mines not rusting it's just not pulling water out of the air.
Compressor failed or failed to turn on because the humidity sensor failed (humidistat).
Mine, same model. Lasted less than 2 years. Leaking freon. Junk!
How do you know if the refrigerant has leaked out?
Used his eyes.....those copper pipes are paperthin for thermal conduction and with that much corrosion there is no copper metal left except for cupric oxide powder...also refrigerant oil leaked out and so corrosions looked WET....tap that on your finger and put water over it, and if it stays then it is refrigerant oil..
Same exact thing with my GE. these are garbage. problem is, i'm not sure any other brands are any better.
I have the same one and it died in two years. Cheap GE shit. Paid over $200. Not gonna buy GE.
All brands are all junk. I bought a different brand before this GE and it died at 13 months. I bought another GE (since it lasted a few years) and plan to use the old one for parts.
Good luck with whatever you buy.
My GE lasted about 5 years, but it has this same rust issue. Sounds like mine may have been a long-distance runner! It's a shame that we throw all this stuff in the landfill because it's planned-obsolescence garbage.
Junk
All of this stuff is "built to fail" it seems. Very wasteful on our natural resources.
Which country built this ?
My own dehumid lasted just 15 months.
all dehumidifiers peace of crap, lasted 2-3 years, buy insurance
Who need to watch you remove the screws?
You would be surprised how many people ask where the screws are. Lucky for you, there’s a skip/fast forward feature on CZcams.
What I was looking for was ANY VIDEO with the outer shell being taken off the GE dehumidifier, Thank you for making this. Lots and lots of videos explaining how to clean removable filter and then an oddly large amount of unboxing videos...which I think are kinda dumb in general. Im like: Oh this one is 30min he has to get into technical stuff...right? Nope just a random talking about his dehumidifier for half an hour...not a single screw removed.
Lol. I hope this one helped please help me by subscribing.
