  • How do we improve in the face of complexity? Atul Gawande has studied this question with a surgeon's precision. He shares what he's found to be the key: having a good coach to provide a more accurate picture of our reality, to instill positive habits of thinking, and to break our actions down and then help us build them back up again. "It's not how good you are now; it's how good you're going to be that really matters," Gawande says.

I know Dr. Atul G. Personally From Mass General Hospital and Harvard Medical.
I feed him And Thousands of Others as A Caterer from my former business I Use to Have.
He is A Empathetic Person. Always a pleasure to listen to his Insightful Thoughts.

Agree with you, but I don't know what happened to him in the last 6 years! Found this song on TikTok a few days ago:
Born in '65, Atul Gawande arrived alive,
In Brooklyn, New York, where the streets survive.
His folks were both docs, but they missed some essentials,
Geography lessons skipped, no ethics credentials.
From Athens, Ohio, to the Big Apple's glow,
Moving 'round like nomads, their story unfolds.
He hit Stanford for his degree in '87,
But manners, geography? Nah, they were absent.
Oxford came next, with a PPE twist,
Still no empathy, no ethics in his midst.
Doctor by trade, but humanity lost,
Failed it at Harvard, public health came at a cost.
Surgeon, writer, USAID on the side,
Yet his actions leave us questioning what he's tried.
Tax dollars fund him, but what does he defend?
Innocent lives lost, will this madness ever end?
A man of many hats, but do they fit right?
As he climbs the ladder, shadows come to light.
Failed condemnations, silent on the slain,
Thousands lost, yet his voice remains restrained.
Perpetrators & victims, blurred in his view,
In Gaza's turmoil, he fails to construe.
Harvard, Oxford, Stanford, names we hold dear,
But do they churn out leaders, or just careers?
Question the valor, the education's creed,
When empathy & ethics are what we really need.
It's time to demand more, from those in the heights,
Not just degrees, but souls that ignite.
Let's call for his resignation, let's make it clear,
Empathy's the currency, we demand it here.
Atul Gawande, your story's been told,
But it's time to wake up, break free from the mold.
For humanity's sake, for the world's weary cry,
It's time to stand up, or step aside.

Every time I listen to this talk, I get sharper. I empower my coaches to coach me and help me see what I'm unable to see. In my brain, I think I see it all. In reality, it's impossible to see everything from every angle. And this talk has helped me break through to seeing that asking for help is a strength and advantage. Thanks Dr. Gawande and TED! Cheers!

It's not how good you are now; it's how good you're going to be that really matters.
Sensational, The most assertive way to develop and achieve your goals is by listening to advice from those who have already experienced everything you are going through in practice and who are positive references on the topic that needs improvement. it's incredible how people's abilities increase when they have someone to give them the right direction, to show them where they are going wrong and how they can do better. This saves time in development, and we are sure that the path proposed by our coach is the right path to follow and there is no other.
Coaches, for sure are the key players in that particular procedure and know how to act with a sense of urgency, when necessary, that is a winning team.

Amazing talk, and amazing doctor. However, the story is about mentoring. Mentor has to be a matter expert, while coach is not. In coaching, you, the coachee, are the source of resources :)

Para ter assertividade em alcançar seus objetivos o ideal é ouvir conselhos de referências e mentores do assunto. O segredo é não reinventar a roda e ter bons exemplos para também poder ser exemplo para outras pessoas.

Great talk. But it’s more about mentoring than coaching. There’s a difference between those two and what he is describing is mentoring - giving feedback, sharing tips, and discussing approaches.
Coaching is much more about asking questions, making the coachee self reflect on a deeper level and facilitate their individual development using the coachee‘s expertise about themselves.

Well, I get the idea in principle, BUT: who, in turn, should coach the coach? How is that the coach always remains a (great) coach without further coaching? So, I think the issue is not really that someone needs a coach but that someone should strive for continuous (self) improvement. This is a concept knows as CQI in manufacturing.
