      I've just tried and it works so well I'm reconsidering the purchase of a real lathe (consider that I do very small works like hobby on tiny pieces). To place the support bar for the chisel,I've used the socket placed on the side of the chuck (the one that is intended to host the guide for the depht of the hole) and I've used a metal guide for a shelf instead than a threaded bar. Cool! Thanks again!

    You actually gave me a good Idea! LOL. I am trying to figure out an "easy" way to turn 99% true cylinders on a wood lathe without using a copy mechanism. One thing that can work as you did here ... some pretty rough sandpaper attached to a flat board!
    Just turn it down and then use the sandpaper-board to get it roughened out. I can also think of a jig to use, to make the sandpaper-board be parallel by default to the workpiece.
    Well that would solve pure strait cylinders, but i think it could also work to create a small cones too.

    Nice, I just made a Birch Spinning Top for my wife. She saw one at a flea market and remarked that she had one as a young girl. They wanted too much money for them. They were original classics from the 50s. It took forever with stock removal technique on my band saw and belt grinder. But I made it. Now I will try this idea and make one a lot faster and fancier too ! Thanks !

  • @mpikas
    @mpikas Před 9 lety +1

    If you ever consider doing something like that again, things that I've had good luck with:
    - cutting the dead center- just chuck it up in a drill and then hold it up against the sander/grinder, you can get a perfect, almost polished point. Also, cut the threads back a little from the point
    - I've had surprisingly good luck using a 1" forestner bit hammered into the end of the piece as a spur drive
    - a piece of tubing/pipe pushed over the rest giving you a smooth surface to work with makes it much easier to end up with a nicely finished piece. Also, the closer you get it to the work the safer it is.

    • @NickFerry
      @NickFerry  Před 9 lety

      Mark Pikas I have only done one other project this way since. I hope to be able to show a short clip of that eventually. It is a surprise for someone and they haven't gotten the surprise yet. I considered using a forstner bit for the drive, but one thing I planned on making needed extra height that the bit took up. The tubing is a great idea for the tool rest, I hadn't thought of that. My dead center was a fairly quick and crude technique. If I was going to do this a lot, I would be tempted to try and recess a skate bearing in the bottom of the wood to act more as a live center.

    My property is covered with a big bushy nuisance plant called Ocean Spray which spreads like Scotch Broom, but the thick stalks are incredibly dense and hard. In the pioneer days they called this plant "Iron Wood" as it was hard enough to make rudimentary nails with. I've been wondering how to turn some of the wood without investing in a lathe. Your method is just what I needed to start creating file handles, drawer pulls and other useful things. Thanks a lot!

    On that tool guide, I would have used a spacer sleeve (thin walled stainless tube) with a flat washer on bottom and top. then a nylon lock nut up top. Smooth working surface and the washer/ nut combo would have put more vertical strength into that piece of all thread.

    Very well done, Nick Ferry . I turned a few replacement chess pieces on my drill press about a year ago for a friend. They turned out great. Like you, I lack a lathe in my shop. My biggest fear about getting a lathe is what seems to be a lot of 'required' accessories, such as chucks and tools that are insanely costly to purchase. Some day though. I took me a while to figure out what you were making. I was pleasantly surprised!

    For the first time since the universe was created six billion years ago, a drill press has been used as a Wood lathe to make salt and pepper shakers.

    I can't believe that he even attempted that with the fixed center not being on a bearing. But it worked pretty well, and the salt and pepper shakers turned out better than expected.. Also, he should have put the centering shaft in a drill press and made the point that way so it would be perfectly centered.

    freakin awesome dude .. Ive been wanting a cheap way to turn wood for cedar, basswood, and balsa fishing lures .. looked at the harbor freight mini lathe.. but Im on a tight budget .. and dont wana spend much as a test .. if I can make what I want .. I will upgrade in the future to a real mini lathe.. they charge 40-60 bucks for what you just made .. I cant wait to go home and make me a lather on my drill press !

    Dude your awesome!! I bet the vibration came from the base of your press, if you were to secure something at the bottom of the plate that could move and secure after the plate is adjusted it wouldn't vibrate quite as badly.
    Freaking love it!!

    I would add another bolt parallel to the one you rest your chisel on the next slot of your drill press base. Bolt it down and link them together at the top with a flat piece of metal with 2 holes, to give you more instabilíthy in case of wobbly.

    • @NickFerry
      @NickFerry  Před 4 lety

    Recently saw a pic of a DIY live center made from an old bike hub with the spokes cut off and a piece of wood for the bottom plate...grind a pointed taper on one end of the hub bolt, screw the other side of the hub flange to the wood through the old spoke holes and just let the whole through bolt spin with the workpiece.
