  • Hi, I'm Ricki!
    I'm preparing my Subaru for a 2500 mile Alaska roadtrip, and it's important that I can still work full-time from the car 😅.
    So, I'm trying to figure that out, testing out a portable desk.
    But it's not all work, I also have a Oru folding kayak that I'm trying to fit into the car too.
    It's not often enough that you see people’s experiments play out. You just see if they work out and their successes after. This leaves a huge gap in understanding and I think makes people (myself included) even more afraid of “failing.”
    You can come along while I make all the mistakes so you don't have to. 😆
    There isn't much of a how-to manual on this unconventional sort of life, so I'm looking to crowdsource help in figuring it out, so please leave comments with suggestions for me!

      I'm glad you are liking the process. I felt like these sorts of putting the puzzle pieces together videos were sorely lacking when I was doing research. Which I now understand because I have to fight myself on thinking "is anyone going to find this interesting" but I would have. Seeing the trial and error helps to figure out what might work for each individual person. More to come!

    I like the idea of adding and purchasing things only as you really need them. It will help with necessities đŸ€— the laptop desk is a hard one đŸ€” you could do some modifications like a stick on rubber pad to keep it from sliding

      @FeralGirlFreedom  Pƙed 3 měsĂci

      Good point about the rubber mat, I had not thought of something like that! In this case I've got another option I'm looking at. Step-by-step getting this stuff assessed and either incorporated or returned. I don't want to end up with a pile of stuff I don't use. Thanks for commenting on that, it's making my frugal nature look good. 😆

    Glad you're going to replace the tarp. It does seem noisy and cumbersome!

      Super cumbersome! That thing is gone! Thanks for watching, I've gotten so much more set up with the car in the later videos. Hope you'll like those too.

    I just started following you and watching your videos. Very interesting. About the tray for the laptop, I think it can be modified. For example, you can put a larger thin(1/4") piece of wood on top, even create some stoppers on it so that the laptop does not slide and stays in place. đŸ€

      So awesome that you are following along while I try to figure all of this out. And I really like that idea about making the area larger, and helping the laptop stay on with stoppers! Thank you for that suggestion!

    Nice job Ricki. Hopefully you figure out your "office". I like your layout. I put a hitch in Hannah's Subaru. Maybe something like that with a hitch rack? That might get in the way though. Looking forward to the next one.

      Thank you for your comment on my "office" it's a work in progress. I'm hoping my next try is going to be a bit of a better fit. But I do know that it's not going to be perfect.
      As for the hitch, you messed up mentioning that, I might jut show up one day with the parts. Hahaha, I'm just kidding I won't do that. Most likely. :P

    I’d use the laptop on my lap when sitting in the passenger seat. If u also have an iPad u could use that as a second monitor - should u need more space/displays.

    • @FeralGirlFreedom
      @FeralGirlFreedom  Pƙed 3 měsĂci +1

      I don't have a second monitor now, but I have had my eye on some that actually hook to the laptop so they don't need to sit on anything. Those are quite expensive and not absolutely needed, so they are going further down on the priority list.
      I unfortunately deal with early arthritis in my neck from scoliosis, so I can have the computer down as low as my lap for extended periods of time. So I've got a new option coming. Stay tuned for my next try at the mobile office!

      Great point! I did end up messing with it a bunch more and then the angle wasn't right and the computer would slide off. It just wasn't the right fit. Back on the hunt. I might have found one...
