FFXIV - Warrior of Light's Theme (To the Edge)

- Lyrics on the subtitles.
Final boss of the post-shadowbringers storyline that ends the story of the First and the unsundered Ascians.
As you probably know by now, this song was composed by Soken while he was hospitalized fighting laryngeal cancer. I have nothing but respect for the man, and I wish him all the best. #WelcomeBackSoken
I might have repeated this fight many times just to get a drk footage and limit break in sync with the attack... totally worth it. Now this really feels like an appropriate ending for the warrior of darkness saga.
I've noticed that human bosses are usually huge (kefka, warrior of light etc.), I think it's probably a reference to old school FF boss fights when the pixel art for the boss was gigantic in comparison to the party members (also because fighting an enemy you can barely see is boring).
The theme has some different tunes in phase 1 and 2, I tried to find a way to put them together skipping the bottom mashing transition phase.

Lyrics:
All our splendour bathed black in silence
Our surrender a sombre reverie
Slowly drifting down into twilight
Left to sifting through faded memories
Know our places, for worth is wordless
Evanescent, this writing on the wall
Brother stay this descent to madness
Come and save us. Catch us before we fall
Like broken angels, wingless, cast from heavens' gates
(Our slumb'ring demons awake)
We only fly when falling, falling far from grace
(Hell take us, heaven can wait)
Our lives a message in a bottle cast to sea
(Disgrace untold and unseen)
Quick to their ends, our candles burn until we're free
In monochrome melodies
Our tears are painted in red
(Bleeding to the edge)
Deep inside we're nothing more
Than scions and sinners
In the rain
Do light and darkness fade
Yes, time circles endlessly
The hands of fate trained ahead
(Pointing to the edge)
All things change, drawn to the flame
To rise from the ashes.
To begin
We first must see the end
Rock of ages, we cast the first stone
In our cages, we know not what we do
Indecision here at the crossroads
Recognition, tomorrow's come too soon
Follow blindly like lambs to slaughter
At the mercy of those who ply the sword
As our song wends dead underwater
We're forgotten for now and evermore
Without a compass wand'ring lost in lies of faith
(Faith slowly wasting away)
Only alive in fighting Death's amber embrace
(Our hearts beat loud, unafraid)
On Hands and knees we pray to gods we've never seen
(Come shadow, come follow me)
The final hour upon us, no more time to breathe

Yeah! Now this song really hits different.
Making Emet-Selch recognizable by his hand wave, instead of re-using his asset…So brilliant.
I like to think that the Ascians who "died" thus far aren't *actually* dead, per se, they've just been "cleansed" of Zodiark's influence (essentially, they are no longer "tempered" by Zodiark and have thus had their "free will" restored), and that's why Emet shows up in masked form to help us out here, as a way to show that he no longer sides with the Ascians who serve Zodiark.
@@gamester512 nope they died, they no longer of solid bodies and are just aether, they have to inhabit a body. they died when their aether is reduced to nothing either by being consumed (lahabrea, elidibus) or disbursed via an opposing aether via white auracite. (nabriales, emet)
@@azadalamiq last I checked it seemed Elidibus' soul went into the CT. And Gaia was killed but was reincarnated so realistically we don't know. Pandemonium in the Endwalker slide shows Lahabrea in the background so clearly something else is going on
@@azadalamiq Honestly the fridge logic of FF14's death system is wonky as hell.
Zodiark ate half the Souls to stop the End. (Which is implied to be the result of the reality bending Ancients collectively panicking themselves to death, likely when the frog thing broke out of the Academia dungeon.)
The 13 shards contain the splintered souls of everyone else because Hydalyn did shenanigans. She recycles the finite souls available.
Its implied the moment someone dies, they basically get queued for reincarnation. Memory wipe, race change, general personality kept.
Which means that Dotharl Xaela are actually right, just scaled too small.
While Emet and Lahabrea were not included when the system was set in motion, it is not clear if dying properly makes them subject the system now. If so, this also means a new Minfilia likely exists on Eorzea as she properly died to release Ryne.
But none of that is ironclad, its all implication till Yoshi confirms, and the game in general is filled with exceptions for plot reasons.
Reading "re-using his asset" gave me rabies and sent me to hell. The blank slate ascian model is a re-used asset. Tf you talking about?

@@TheBlackPigeon It still doesn't justify it aside from this particular fight it won't be utilized again after this.
Underappreciated detail to me: unlike nearly every other boss fight in the game where the intro fades to white on the enemy, in this trial it fades to white on you and your party. It made me feel like the party is the real boss fight for this Warrior of Light, who truly believes he's in the right.
Don't forget what Squall says in FF8.
He doesn't think there is an inherent right or wrong, just two sides fighting for what they believe is right.
In other words, you're correct.
@@OmegaTKB There is always a right and wrong but it all depends on the view of what the person believes in, which in times pretty much at it's basis Light vs Dark, yet without light dark cannot exist and so is true with the opposite. This fight is pretty much the manifestation of truth vs ideals. Where he think he's the savior of mankind you know that it's false so you fight for the truth but at the same time you know he wasn't wrong with a few of the things he said.
Great catch. In addition, in Japanese media, visually speaking, protagonists / good guys are usually facing left while the antagonists are facing right (as opposed to western media, where this is the other way around). In the fight into, WoL is facing left, then it pans to your party then the fade to white.
It fits the other iconography in this fight as well. The WoL's attacks are all using heroic primary colors with bright summons, while the person YOU summon to revive your group is 5.0's villain.
The Warriors of Darkness are Shadowbringers, not just because they brought back night on the first, but because they were saved from doom at a hero's hand by the personification of darkness and mass murder.
Subtly same goes with Hades fight, it also fades to with on you and the party.
So Soken was doing his own "trial" by himself...and actually won. What a legend
It's only in partial remission but we can hope he continues to get better
Im praying his remission will get better and better... Soken is a LEGEND
well the doctors are also legends. praise your healers when tanking, everyone!
Cancer (Savage)
Soken is a true warrior of light.
Emet-Selch: Yo, I heard you guys missed me
i cried again seeing him
I just about smiled when I seen him
It made me tear up. Our best bad boy gave us one last gift. I will never forget him
Shut up I’m not crying you are ;-;
Party wiped cause about half of us were spamming "EMET!!" and mechanics happened.
After Soken's fanfest announcement that he composed this while in a hospital bed due to cancer, this song sounds gives a whole new meaning. Massive respect to the dev team! We don't deserve each and every one of you!
The ticking of the clock makes it hit harder
Thank God he’s alright. What a legend
On top of that, none of the lyrics are just cryptic wordplay, every part of the song means something. The full song tells the entire history of the Ascians, the schism among their council (Emet's objections, Azem leaving), going from their peak to their eventual doomed fate as mere shades, scattered across spacetime, trying fruitlessly to revive their dead civilization and barely remembering their original goals or identities.
Time becomes an endless circle for the Ascians, dying, being reborn, losing more and more of themselves in each cycle of rebirth as their fractured souls fall apart. Elidibus in the end is revealed to have been a *child* who was burdened with a tremendous responsibility-- one he almost accomplished singlehandedly, too!
Wow. I had no idea until I came into this comment section.. Thank God he is doing okay.

Musical genius *and* legend.
The fact that he specifically summons 7 other warriors of light to give himself a full party is beaten only by the fact that it lets him cast a max limit break. Genuinely such an incredible fight.
“Well, Hydaelyn… I take my leave of you. Yours is the mantle of the last of us. May you have… the joy of it, the burden,…. and the solitude. It falls to you now, you and your champion, to save our star”
Elidibus: "And so it ends, in unceremonious silence."

Elidibus: "NANI?!"
Emet-Selch: "Go play, children. I'm out."

The last Ascian/Ancient using the powers of a Warrior of Light to fight the Warrior of Light using the powers of an Ascian/Ancient. It's honestly incredible.
he's not just using the powers of a Warrior of light. he is the *FIRST* Warrior of Light. the original.
The final hope of his mankind.
He wasn't the first WoL. He has ever been steering both sides of light/dark to achieve balance and hope, since he is a primal based on hope/salvation.
He himself said that he was the very first warrior of light. Which makes sense if there were no heroes at the time he would be one himself and lead by examples. He will go against his fellow ascians if they grown too strong all to steer mankind to their true course, he is salvation.
@@dirtgrid5351 If you recall the cutscene in Anamnesis Anyder, Elidibus was looking at the First WOL. Elidibus explicitly mentions him:

I just realized the clock ticking in the theme is supposed to be a reference to the Amaurot theme's clock ticking. But unlike the Amaurot theme, which was a slow ticking of the doomsday clock, this one is a really quick, frantic ticking. This is Elidibus's last shot to undo everything and the clock that points towards the true end of the Ascian civilization is ticking ever faster as we wittle him down.
EDIT: The clock ticking now takes a new meaning after Soken's announcement
I actually see this in a different way, due to the following cutscene. To me, time has is what made Elidibus forget his duty, lose those precious days with his friends and loved ones, and now, when he has the time, his friends aren't there to share in the "beautiful day", he's all alone
basically, I think it's a harrowing point of real life existentialism, where time eventually always wins against a person's life. I think that's why his death cutscene hit so hard for me
Hey why did I nearly cry reading these two comments.

Elidibus represents us, and I would say his tragedy is on par with Emet-Selch. He was driven by his sole desire to help his friends and the people he cared about. He loved them so much that, even after he had sacrificed himself to become the heart of Zodiark, he pulled himself away from Zodiark because he knew that they needed him, and he wanted to protect them. He was always told that he was obsessed with his duty; but really, he did it all for the same reason we continue to fight.
"For those that we have lost. For those we can yet save."
But in the end, he really had nothing left to fight so hard for. It was blind ambition, at this point. He fought to protect his people and his friends, but they were all long-since gone.

So whilst it may be physical death in order to achieve the Rejoinings, for the soul it entails reunion and becoming more whole, along with the star becoming more complete again. That is how they see it. They are higher life forms and an analogy can be drawn with how we humans view animals we regard as lesser. So whilst the sundered may see it as murder, to the unsundered it is undoing an error inflicted on the souls of their people. The soul is made whole and eventually reborn. Emet explained this stuff quite well, and his Tales from the Shadow story elaborates on it further - on the sorrow he felt when he made an attempt to father a son only to just see him die, reminding him of the frailty of the mortals, and drawing an analogy with the firebird he puts down earlier in the story. They're similar to humans but at the same time they were a lot more, being practically immortal and in possession of many great powers.
Elidibus, on the other hand, is something different to Emet in that he's the remnants of both Zodiark's imperative and what was once Elidibus. His motives are a bit more muddled and driven by an obsessive sense of duty to his people.
Just calling it "murder" or "genocide" isn't really an apt description of what's going on, and ignores the state Hydaelyn/Venat inflicted on the world, which is in some ways worse than murder given what it did to the world and the souls.
So far, we've seen no compelling reason to explain why she did what she did, and if they're following XII's Zodiark, it may just come down to paranoia... and the sundering, a huge and very costly accident. So let's keep the sundering in mind.
That opening ticking sound though
If you know, you know...incredible respect
with endwalker’s context this becomes even cooler
elidibus was popping off so hard that his dynamis usage, even as an Unsundered, was greater than ours
Or more likely, he was using prodigious amounts of aether to _mimic_ a Limit Break.
Yup, even as the 'warrior of light' elidibus is still an unsundered ancient, he can't use dynamis
You can see all the WoL spirits around him helping him Limit Break
What Serina said. He didn't know how the limit break really worked, so he used an ungodly amount of aether to mimic and hopefully surpass ours, and thus "level four". That's why even though it's "just" level three vs his four, our dynamis powered limit actually matches his, even if just barely.
@lenlimbo I disagree, we know that dynamis is the power of emotion, and hope is the one we see often as strongest. I just believe that his own hopes for the future + the ungodly amount he got through summoning the essence and hopes of other warriors of light just straight up surpassed his unsundered aether. "join with me in hope and prayer for the salvation of all" are his words before he takes on all the warriors of light. He's just literally the embodiment of hope for the ascians, and that's hype.
"I am salvation given form, mankind's first hero and his final Hope!"
It kinda points towards it.
Even his invuln mentions it:
"Clad in prayer I am invincible"
The same way our friends prayers in Última Thule made us "invincible"
Just an interesting thing I noticed: The Crystal Tower raid series (Labyrinth) drops the Warrior of Light tank glamour, and you fight the actual Warrior of Light on top of the Crystal Tower.
this just dawned on me while watching this video too!!!!
only thing is the WoL glam is a bit jank lmao
New guy: wait the OG WOL is the final boss of this patch?
Me: No, WE ARE THE FINAL BOSS
Knowing that Soken was battling cancer when he composed this song, that "You still stand" after the LB4 hits very differently.
Thank you Soken
To The Edge feels so much deeper now...
STAND TALL SOKKEN!!
This boss says: "Can you do basic mechanics, like mashing?"
Players: *mutters incoherently*
I don’t wanna talk about how we failed three times to this...I chalked it up to they just wanted to hear the music lol
to quote a player from my 1st run: they dialed it up to 11
I cried at "My people, my brothers......my friends"
the way elidibus reaches for emet-selch, its almost a gesture of "take me with you!"
he wanted to this to be over as much as anyone else
Wanna know something that makes the scene after this fight hit you in the feels even more?
The two Amaurotians Elidibus is talking to in the Echo vision earlier were Lahabrea and Igeyorhm. And that the two crystals he picks up were theirs.
OH SHIT :( Elidibus only wanted too protect his brothers while he kept forgetting on why he was fighting
I don't know how you'd know who they are
@@lunausagi8495 game files
@@lunausagi8495 someone on Reddit worked out which constellations were shown on the rocks, and FF12 (where all the Ascians are Scions of Light) have constellations linked to each Scion. So that part's pretty easy, at least.
That part meant a lot to me and my friend we recently lost a friend who played FFXIV with us and when Emet came back we look at each other and was like JB...... we both cried playing this fight .....RIP JB
Rest In Peace warrior of light
Izzy8u Darkness*
May he ever walks in the light of the Crystal
That is extremely cringy.
My dog also died while I fought Emet and now I see him again and think of my dog. :(
This song's even more important now.
*an ancient appears*
Me: Man all these guys look the same who the hell is this guy?
*waves his hand all weird as he turns around*
Me: Oh shit, its Emet-Selcht...
The finger snap was more than enough to know who was
@@IPWNEDSASUKEANDKIRA I thought it was Azem (ie "us") and considered we were just flexing a bit, so I didn't put much meaning into the finger snap.
THEN he did the hand wave while walking off and everyone in the party was :D
To be fair to that, we DO channel Emet's personality with the "You've no fight left to fight" dialogue option earlier, so a fingersnap could go either way.
That hand wave was sassy af
@@IPWNEDSASUKEANDKIRA the snap didnt click with me at first(tho I did finally remember the snap after this fight haha) but the hand wave was the one that clicked me the most for some reason
The finger snap didn’t do it for me but when he did the hand wave is what gave it away.
Elidibus is basically just a kid playing pretend with all of his toys he gathered from other worlds. That shit cuts deep.
I feel like Elidibus was a prodigy child that people placed their hopes on, which is why he always worked too hard to meet those expectations to point of the mission was all that mattered.
@@Shiirow Not only that. He had an idol. Azem. Us. We were his inspiration, he wanted to save everyone. And yet.. There were not there to see it..
@@Shiirow Also highlights why he took in that kid from the Warring Triad questline. He saw a lot of himself.
@@TonyRedgrave yeah unulkahai still in rising stones right? if memory serves (btw he is warrior of light also, but is his power still potent? or non-existent after 13th become void?)
@@gatra1320 Yeah he is. And his power is still unrefined due to him being so young. He laments that fact several times through out the questline.
My homie Emet-Selch with the carry

I feel this too much, literally was the only one lmao they’re hopefully coming back for next patch tho
As a major fan of the Overlord series that got me too much.
Well given recent diagnoses, I'm gonna need to break some of my own limits. This song will have to give me strength for the road ahead.
Wishing you the best 🙏💖
Good luck, friend. Stay strong, keep moving forward.
I hope you're doing well. We're pulling for you.

"FOR RECOVERY, I RENDER UP MY ALL"
I hope you are still breaking your limits.
And lets not forget. Elidibus wished to be just like Azem, which is US.
Not only did he put a great fight, he battled the one he looked up at the most
#WELCOMEBACKSOKEN
Fighting the ultimate representation of Yoshitaka Amano's artwork and the fusion of all fellow warriors of light from all other worlds... How in the FUCK can there be a conceivable threat to the player after being able to beat something like THAT?!
This whole time Soken was fighting a trial of his own
Elidibus: I am the warrior of the light!
You: No I am the warrior of light!
Aldbert: No I was the warrior of light!
Elidibus: Are there any other Warriors of light I should know about?
*Every other player in the game dancing*
Elidibus: I'm outta here.
Don't forget Hildebrand is technically a warrior of light too xD
Ashley the Panda No. He is a GENTLEMAN of Light.
@@notrowleyjefferson1951 i mean either way... its possible canon elidibus did call out to Hildebrand so...
@@UndyingWladeslaus Summoned image of Hildibrand: *flex posing in Eulmore*
@@UndyingWladeslausHe did. We find him off to the side during the dungeon to reach the CT, and the Hildibrand quest line expands on it
Right expansion 6.0 is getting stage fright and saying “how am I supposed to top that!?!?”
well with some of the lines as u finish the patch the "final tale" of the star means something very interesting is happening
Is kind of a concern for me unless we defeat Zenos in the next two patches. It would be hard to follow shadowbringers if he's still the main villain in 6.0.
I always figured that the "final tale of this star" was directed toward the First.
But I can understand why they'd end the story at 6.0 because I don't see what sort of threat we could face after Zenos (and possibly Zodiark)
Of course, we could always go to Thavinair or Sharlayan
When I heard that line of the last chapters, my brain was just like, "Ah, so this universe is gonna die and we're gonna go to a new one. That would help explain the stat crunch a little."
@@miatsuzuboski Another meaning could be 'The End of the Tale of Zodiarc and Hydaelyn.' They are the forces that represent 'Our star' itself, the force to keep Him sundered. We know Zenos is eager to devour Zodiarc's power, and desires the player to consume Hydaelyn. Devouring those eldest primals would no doubt cause some pretty hectic carnage to the world, given how inextricably linked to them they are. hence the Apocalypse G'raha's narration hints at.
However, the end of the Tale of This star does not mean the end of the story of the Warrior of Light / Darkness. There are plenty other corners of the world for us to explore. Merycidia to the south, The New World to the West, and who knows what else upon the surface of the Source alone, each containing mysteries and threats of their own for us to confront.
That would be my theory, at least. They sure af ain't ending FF XIV. They make too much money to close off the story now, especially when it is still such a relatively young MMO, when compared to its peers.
To me, Warriors of Light! I am salvation given form! Mankind’s first hero... and his final hope! For victory, I render up my all!
You know you're screwed when you're fighting the game's original mascot and he poses like the marketing banner :D
TFW we work so hard to be able to fight the biggest baddest of all the Ascians...
...and he's just a fucking kid who wanted to be a hero.
No, that fits Arthur (From the last expansion) this guy is basically THE Legend, and unlike Arthur, you had to use a plot coupon to get out of the banishment that would have been the end for you.
This song just hits harder than it already is now after learning what Soken went through to make this.
this entire patch was like a nostalgia blast, from the music to the content, and I loved it. just this theme alone, god.
Though the boss itself is a of course an FF1 reference, the second phase is more of one big FF4 reference.
-A Black Mage and White Mage using Twincast (Palom and Porom)
-The Twincast spell causing meteor circles which require two people (Golbez and Fusoya's Twin Meteor)
-The boss itself using an incredibly powerful Jump (Kain)
-The Dark Knight appearing with the Baron Helm outright (Cecil)
-Casting a powered up Holy at the same time the Bard is present (Rosa)
-The Ninja using what is effectively Flood (Edge)
-The Summoner summoning Bahamut for a one-and-done attack, the same color of 4's Megaflare even (Rydia)
The only one that doesn't really fit is the Spectral Warrior, but either way fun references all around.
I think the Spectral Warrior is supposed to be ff4 Cid, iirc he mainly used hammers but could also equip axes.
@@metabiospark Yeah he even talks like Cid.
Yup. I FREAKED OUT WHEN I SAW CECIL AND EDGE!!!!
dont forget the bard is Edward he can equip a bow in the 2D versions
and the Red Bahamut is also a reference to FF1 ! This is Bahamut who awoken Warriors of light in FF1!
Elidibus?
More like Elidibust a move to this banger of an OST.
They closed the Shadowbringers storyline to a very good heartfelt end. I felt like I was watching a movie.
This is a movie :)
Shadowbringers is an interactive and immersive movie. ;)
A movie? Pffft. This is way better than a movie.
just think, when EW releases there will be new players MSQ skipping past ShB :/
This sure does hit different now after fanfest.
"Riding home" suddenly takes a new meaning...
This patch made me cry so much.
4:48 "No way, is that really..."
4:57 *"IT'S HIM!!!"*
Our whole party was freaking out in chat, wife and I damn near wanted to cry seeing that snap and wave.
I was in tears seeing it was him.
But in that emotion we all wanted to put our best rotations forward and try hard to fight it was inspiring. And some that don’t game can’t understand why we do it. This....this is why.
I just realized, the scene at 5:20 is the FFXIV logo but in game. Holy shit.
I hate it when the box art tries to kill me.
Ya know with how many times Elidibus appeared on the moon we should've expected the FF4 references
And now we have Endwalkers
@@FreedomHero4 yep
"To begin, we must first see the end..."

The fact the WoL gets his own party with their own limit break is down right epic and the whole fight becomes a race on which party can get their LBs up.
I love that when he LB4s the rest of the party is cheering for Elidibus in the same manner our parties celebrate after completing a trial or dungeon.
@@amsaa91 It's also the reaction when someone limit breaks. Next time you see someone limit break, look at yours and other characters and they will cheer then on (keep in mind it will not interrupt other animations so your best bet of seeing it is by standing still).
