  • Welcome to the 6th Episode of Total War Profiled, and Today, we have Carthage.
    Total War Profiled is a historical series that looks into the accuracy behind factions from Total War.
    Carthage turned out to be very accurate, despite how annoyed I got.
    Enjoy : )

      It's terrible. French are honourable, Germans are doing something for humanity, Swedish are called norska. Aztecs are very accurate. Finally a game, that depicts them as lizardman race, they were. There's a conspiracy theory, that says they were humans to make Spanish look bad. Same people say Denmark exist. Fools. Than how do you explain this?

      @willlastnameguy8329 Před rokem

      I agree about it being one of the most fun campaigns. The key is to just expand slowly, take all of Iberia, and wait for your armored war elephants. Once I can train them, it's basically game over. A full stack of armored elephants, with one or two sacred band cavalry, is invincible in the open field. You trample over urban cohorts like they're histati. Even late period overpowered Egyptians are no match for you in the field. The only issue is sieges, but if you have a general, just hire one infantry, sap the wall, and rush the plaza with your elephants. You win.
      Sacred band infantry is just behind Spartans as far as best phalanx units. They can fight just as well out of phalanx, and are one of the best city defense units in the game.
      The two turn training for these units sucks, but the game gives you plenty of time.
      Sorry for the long reply, 3 years late, but I've seen this faction dismissed too many times. People struggle with their mediocre early units, quit, and call them bad. Because they're trying to play them like Romans.

      A lot of the inaccuracies get cut, otherwise it would be an hour long video, but that one is something I should have brought up.

    • @sevenpolar3483
      @sevenpolar3483 Před 4 lety +8

      that is because Carthage Nova would not be around for another few years and the location was home to an Iberian tribe at the time, so it is actually portrayed correctly at the moment

    Carthage is a late game faction. Sacred bands and elephants take two turns to train, but once you have full stacks of them, you're basically invincible in both field, and defensive city combat.

    Great overview, I've always loved Carthage and whenever I'm a non Roman faction I always try and keep them alive as long as I can - I did my dissertation on Carthage! It used to bug me how weak the Iberian infantry and Libyan spearmen where, it is what gets them constantly steamrollered. I've edited their stats in my game to make them stand up better to hastati and principes!

    • @couchpotatoe91
      @couchpotatoe91 Před 4 lety

      Same here! There's actually a Scutarii skin for Carthage in the game files, you just have to edit it in or google for it.
      Personally I modded Carthage to have scutarii (~hastati) as well as libyan infantry (~principes), the latter only in 12k cities though, so not as early as the Romans.

      @@TheScottishBaker But most players just abuse the absurd power of round shield cavalry, dirt cheap to recruit, dirt cheap to keep around. Zerg rush everything in Spain and Italy and North Africa. Anything the cavalry zerg cannot chew up, mostly likely the greek heavy hoplite, you have slingers.
      This is why I love the vanilla version. Two very weak units very weak stats, looks so useless, but turns out they are the most over used over powerful units of my conquering army.

    Hanno didn't want a prolonged war with Rome as he knew Carthage could not last a long war. That's why he didn't want war as carthage was mainly a trading Empire and didn't have many citizens. It was a like a greek state on steroids.

  • @asherchadwick7716
    @asherchadwick7716 Před 4 lety +1

    In fairness to Hanno, he earned his nickname the Great for his successes against Carthage's African enemies. He was likely focused more on the domestic rivals of Carthage and on expanding Carthaginian control in Africa. From that perspective fighting the Romans is an expensive, disruptive task that isolates a useful trade partner. Why bother with some islands in the Mediterranean when you have rivals at home. The issue comes from neither side getting their way. The Barcids didn't get Mediterranean dominance since Hanno blocked them at every turn and the Hannonids didn't get African dominance due to the Barca family dragging Carthage into the 2nd Punic war pulling resources from any potential African campaigns.

  • @SamuelHallEngland
    @SamuelHallEngland Před 4 lety

    Carthage is one of the most challenging factions to play as imho. Especially because Julii will attack Sardinia via a Senate mission very early on in the campaign. Scipii is likely to attack you on Sicily too. So you will have 4 enemies very quickly. Numidia, Spain and Gaul are easier to deal with, but you will have to fight on so many fronts. And just to top it off the Greek cities are likely to betray you too!

    • @SamuelHallEngland
      @SamuelHallEngland Před 4 lety

      That said, Carthage on very hard is probably my favorite campaign. Going full aggression against the Romans is the only way because if you let them build up then you're only delaying the inevitable!

    Carthaginians were the Phoenicians that spread from Canaan after the Israelites conquered there. The Phoenician Canaanites fled into the area of Greece and fearing further invasion, set across the Mediterranean, founding the Carthaginian empire... I think. They were deathly protective of their trade secrets because it was their trade with Britain that made them the most wealthy, buying the copper and tin from the giants of southwest Britain
