You could tell that she prefers heavier stuff and that's cool. Her take on Saiki is just flat out absurd though. I also found
her take on their outfits somewhat amusing. Sneakers? Really?

    • @Cheezzepuff
      @Cheezzepuff Před 3 měsíci +1

Honestly she's only half wrong about Saiki, the instrumental orchestration is so technically impressive that it does over shadow her vocals a lot. There's some songs like Daydreaming and Endless Story that lets her shine though. I agree with her taste being very heavy, I was hoping he would've played Dice, Hate or Rinne for her because I knew she wouldn't vibe. I mean it's one person, and I think she got caught up on the poppy lyrics. Not a big deal imo.

I agree, there are a lot of female metal bands wearing tight black leather outfits and boots just to please the male audience. I think this is submission to masculine values. That's why I admire Otoboke Beaver, they wear colorful 1.99 dresses, flip-flops and sneakers and they don't care what other people think.

And a thing about the maid outfits, Dilana: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

Barefoot, when one has worn heels, tends to move the weight more onto the toes, so that makes perfect sense.
But I like the strut she has in the heels - and usually Ialso prefer women not to wear them, partly because they can't wear them properly and partly because rather than "elongating' the lower leg I think it has a bad result of throwing the hips out and thickening the calves - both of which are counter to the desired effect.

I, too, was originally enamored with the band first, then Saiki. I get it. Now, however, I can't imagine this band minus Saiki, or anyone else. It's all or nothing at this point.
I did find her maid costume bias comical. I wonder if it's because of some perceived sexual connotation, or whatever. I've seen several reactors go straight into fetishizing the outfits and that was pretty telling on their end. Rock history is filled with "outlandish" outfits, from David Bowie to L'il Nas X. Maid outfits aren't really all that odd when compared to KISS or Slipknot. Though, I did put off listening to BAND-MAID for a bit because I thought they were a "pop" band at first. Heh, nope.

You can tell it just wasn't her cup of tea, which is cool. Everyone has a right to their own opinion both aesthetically and acoustically.
What I find irritating and weak is that for the 2nd time this week (with this particular performance I should clarify) I've seen a reaction channel mention the Maid Aesthetic Aspect as being an issue, which as of this concert is a BS excuse. There is only 1 Maid left and she's not prominently featured in this video. There's practically no Maid imagery to be seen anywhere on stage, so what's the real deal. This issue about Maid Aesthetic carries no weight anymore.
Side Note: It was OK for Angus Young to dress as an English School Boy looking like a reanimated corpse at 70, David Lee Roth to look like a Rock n Roll Richard Simons, Steven Tyler to dress in Mumu's that he stole from Mrs. Roper's closet on Three's Company's and Ramstein to do their schtick on stage. Millions of fans don't even blink about that stuff.

Welcome, Dilana. You are embarking on (along with many others - nearly 200 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (130+ songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!

"Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: czcams.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/video.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Shambles, Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits (AniMaid) like Sense, Glory and Unleash!!!!!  See the Maids 2023 Rockville Festival’s short-set perfection performance: czcams.com/video/vjZkNeoGmhc/video.html
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “StarQueen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 30 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 32 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 32 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 33 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 31 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.

I respect personal taste. I also admit that the vocals are outdone (note: not drowned out) by the instruments on this song mainly because you are indeed looking at the talent-overloaded trio of Kanami, MISA and Akane. Very unfair comparison, don't you think? I think Saiki more than holds her own on stage, but I guess we are all more familiar with her abilities than Dilana is.

  • @maidsandmuses

I always consider the maid outfits an under-appreciated statement of rebellion. They _know_ some will associate it with an exploitation of a cosplay image, but it wasn't their management decide they should wear maid outfits, it was Miku's own inspiration (she had to convince the management in fact as I understand it, as well as Misa and Saiki). These days with their bespoke designed and not exactly traditional maid outfits it feels like a rebellious statement as in, "yeah, we know we'll get some stick for it, but the hell with it, this is us; we're a rock band, we wear what we want and we play whatever we want...we rock!"

    • @PaleHorseShabuShabu

The problem with Saiki and sneakers is which ones would she wear, she has a room fill of them. I personally think that Dilana just doesn't or couldn't make the link with the look and Japanese fashion/culture. Also, all rock does not have to be hard and heavy. But, as she stressed, personal taste.

The funny thing to me was the idea that Band-Maid's music is a more mainstream style "as that's where the money is". The money in rock and metal these days is very much in going extreme rather than 'poppy' as melodic rock tends to get dismissively labelled. If she doesn't like Band-Maid, that's fine. It's probably just a shame that it seems like several reactions were recorded in one go, so that actual discussion was short, whereas given a bit more time, she might have put her points across a little less clumsily.

If there's one thing that never bothered me, it was Maids' clothes. If one day they decide to retire the costumes, that's ok, because what I like about them, a lot, is the sound they make. If it was because of the costume, I always found Kiss's, and I've found it since I discovered the band in the 70s, completely childish. But I was never bothered by that either, because I always liked the songs. For me, feminism is women wearing whatever they want to wear without being criticized and patrolled for it. If you want to wear high heels, that's fine. If she wants to wear booties, that's fine too, she's the one who chooses and no one has anything to do with it. When I met BM, I also thought Saiki's voice was weak for the band. But today I can't imagine the band continuing without her. The songs were made for her to sing, and if someone else did it in her place, it would seem like usurpation. With another singer, BM would have to be another band.

That version was taken off of CZcams ahead of a DVD release and can now only be seen on Bilibili.Though this version is a bit more energetic and technical, that version is far more dramatic. You have to go to the Zepp Tokyo LIVE concert and it's the 9th song in.

She hasn't seen Saikis sneaker collection yet :-) but serious, does she really complains about costumes and comes across as a walking cliché of a uniform rebel chick and exudes thereby a lot more conformity than Saiki in her black dress and heels. And on top of all a bit sugar-coated with the usual cultural ignorance. With their work ethos, their resilience against all adversity and the irrepressible will to achieve and maintain the freedom to do - and to wear - whatever they want, the 5 ladies of B-M embody 10 times more feminism and rebel spirit than many of the so called rebel girls here will ever achieve. And Saiki fits perfect to the musical concept of this band, but tastes are different. A Floor Jansen type of front woman wouldn't fit at all to the B-M sound - and I adore Floor, but in a symphonic band like Nightwish.
