I ended up getting someone to machine some aluminium connectors for the tubing to slide over.

an incredibly well engineered quality piece of equipment. You could mount a digital DSLR on video and it would be the biz. Your kit is fantastic , don't be too hard on yourself! It's excellent
I took the plunge and bought a motorised Proaim pan/tilt head for my jib. My jib isn't designed for that kind of mount so I've made an adapter out of wood. I always have to resort to DIY woodwork which doesn't look professional at all! I wish I had the ability to make acrylic parts like you can!

Nice work, I have built one 6 M 20 ft in 3 sections with a Hague pan and Tilt but not as well engineered as yours I love the pan and tilt but I have to ask how long does it take you to set up the rig and wont the carrying and storage of the cables be a pain in thy ass. lovely work

Where in the UK are you based? I'm a film maker North West based, we have a 12 foot Hauge jib which only has built in Tilt, which is hugely limiting, but this one is amazing! If you are based in the North I'd love to see it/use it some time!

Peter Burton Thanks Peter! The acrylic is pretty strong. It's 10mm thick and hasn't given me any problems. I would rather it had been cut in aluminium but the CNC router I had access to isn't set up to cut aluminium. If by 'poly pipe' you mean the boom, that's made out of aluminium scaffold tubing.

I don't know what editing programme you use, but most allow you to do a voice over providing you have some sort of mike. You can either remove or reduce to zero the original sound track and replace it with the new voice over. Hope this helps. Barry.

I've ended up buying a DSLR so although it won't look as good on my jib, I'm hoping to get a video done soon but I don't expect to get it done this side of Christmas. Hi there! So there are 2 bearings in the pivot, one is just a 'lazy susan' bearing but that alone wouldn't have been enough to prevent the pivot breaking under the load so there is also a thrust bearing where the bolt runs through the pivot mount. The thrust bearing needs to be there otherwise the bolt that holds the pivot to the tripod would stop the pivot rotating after securing. You can see where it secures in my other video from 0:40. Wow I was thinking of similar idea for the mechanism using bicycle wires as I myself thinker allot with my bikes and have spare parts. However where did you place the ends of the cables? As they need to be attached together to become a loop yet have space for them to move freely and not get stuck.
There's no need for the cables to be in a loop, you're only turning the pulley a short distance. They only need to go around half the pulley. The pulleys are in 2 halves (5mm thick acrylic joined to make a 10mm thick pulley) with a hidden channel running through them where the cables go and are clamped by pinch bolts. If you pause the video at 1:37, you can see 2 protruding screws on the pulley (above and below the handle) These are the pinch bolts which are clamping the end of the cables. So, the cable you can see at the top runs about halfway round the pulley then disappears into a channel within the pulley and through the pinch bolt. Look up my acquaintance, Richard Unger @ Henrijib, if you haven't already done so. He's on your side of the pond and builds a monster crane/jib. Servos were a concern for him also. I'm very sure he'd be willing to give you advice or direction. One thing to keep in mind is that common camera size is the DSLR size for many things these days. I can't wait to see your system in use.
You don't need a counterweight for the tilt. All you need to do is make sure the camera's CG is perfectly centered around the tilt axis, then effort will be zero. By removing the counterweight, you can decrease the jib's main weights exponentially.

I honestly couldn't say how many hours I've spent on this project. I've been working on it on and off for about 6 years so because of this, I won't be making the plans/vector freely available. I'm planning on producing a DIY manual and then I may be designing a new jib to market.

You can use low rpm high torque DC motors to power it with an LN298N chip and any type of microcontroller to make it electromechanical
