At risk of being picky; also worth mentioning you, generally, need a "raft" of wood kindling to get a smokeless coal fire established anyway. Therefore, in the early stages of lighting a coal fire, you actually need BOTH ventilation apertures open until the fire/burn is established then you fully close the one. Good vid though...

Got to say read your stoves instructions my multifuel says when first lighting the fire when burning wood have top and bottom open till its up to burn temp then close bottom fully and regulate with top . So whilst I agree in part it's important you know the stove.
MULTIFUEL. Unlike wood only burns do not needva bed of Ash when starting . The bottom draw also come into play when setting the fire with top down method or light and leave method . Namely large logs on the bottom and build the kindling stack on top.

As one other person has pointed out, on my defra stove I have to leave rhe primary open a little to keep the stove from going out.

Thanks for vid. I've been using 2 defra multi stoves over 2 years. But even when established, when I close the bottom vent when using wood, it still goes out. I need both open. (12%moisture logs)

Same here, thought it was just my stove!

Likewise, thought it was only my stove. Watched similar videos, who recommended the same use of the air controls, my fire went out.

Mine does too; depending on the shape and size of the wood. The key is to get the firebox as hot as you can; once the temp is up, the bottom vent can then be closed.

Hey how do you keep the glass clean if you close the bottom for wood. Always thought that was an air wash system. Excuse me for thinking that

      Hi Goon :)
Some stoves are better at keeping the glass clean that others. The two controls are as I have said.
If the stove is overloaded or the moisture content of the flue is too high then this will also have a big influence on how it's all working.
Also, make sure the rope seals are good, if the air is getting in there all the other controls can become useless.
      Hope that helps

      Hi Jeffery
Some you can, its when you see an add-on for a multi-flue kit.

Wood draws oxygen from all directions not just from the top.....
