    Sometimes dated areas look far worse than they are because they are not clean. If it cannot be new or new looking, it must be CLEAN. Scrubbed in the corners with an old toothbrush clean. Magic Eraser clean. Touch up the bad paint or do a repaint. Sparkling clean helps bridge the gap until you can do an update. 😊

    I totally agree no hinges are in right now. I personally love mine so we painted our cabinets the put the old school hinges back on and I love the look. So very cottage. Not for everyone but we have to do what makes us happy 😊

    A way to update short cabinets is to change the countertop and add a sink that sits on top. It works if changing the cabinets is too much.

    Actually the full mirror are making a come back in some of the newer homes. I actually like them. They have a fuller view and a cleaner look. I never understood putting a frame around them to make it look updated. Just one opinion of many.

      I love my full mirror. In the master, the primary lighting goal is to be able to do your daily hygiene and put your makeup on. So FORM follows FUNCTION. I feel like a lot of times the function is put last on this channel. I wish it would be addressed a little bit more, PRIOR to what is the fashionable and cool asthetic. 😊

    Re the large mirrors: before taking them down, be prepared to have to re-mud and re-do the wall behind it because builders often just trowel on a bunch of construction adhesive and stick them on. If you don’t see the little plastic brackets around the edges and the mirror appears to be held up by magic? That’s what you’re dealing with.

  • @createwithconfidence8094

    I recently decided I would do a minor re-make of my now adult daughters' hall bathroom. No window, built in 1999, 5x5 tiles in white with not too thick grout, thankfully. The Hollywood lighting was switched out in 2016. New flooring throughout most of the house, including the bathrooms, was installed in 2018. Plain laminate countertop and dated vanity. Surprisingly, homes in my area still sell for about the same price as updated homes and quickly, despite still having dated bathrooms and kitchens. Still, it is exciting to me to find inspiration in photos of black and white bathrooms. Now I'm painting the room a bright white (said I'd never have white walls again). I found lovely floor to ceiling curtains for the tub/shower and a complementary rug. I can see how paint and a few new furnishings will give the room new life. Thanks for the video. And yes, there was laminate in the small bathrooms and carpet in the primary. We couldn't afford a lot of increased pricing when we bought 25 years ago.

    My house was built in late fifties and IS VERY dated with original fixtures and I LOVE them! :) BIG SECRET Do NOT allow "products" and wash cloths and towels to hang around your tub/shower! Along with being uugly, it is unsanitary. Yes I have the grout with my 1957 canary yellow 4X4 tile but NEVER a speck of mildew as i polish the ceramic DAILY- AND live in Louisiana (jungle heat) :) Love your channel SO MUCH Valentina!

    I’m stuck with some stuff but!!! One of the first things I did 20 years ago was remove my tub/shower glass sliding doors. It’s remarkably simple. All I did after figuring out how to dispose of the beast, was fill in the innocuous holes it left. No big deal but huge reward. Did some light replacement too and replaced the builder mirror with two individuals. Also hard to dispose of. Painted the vanity and replaced fixtures but still dealing with the 80s countertop and odd structure. Maybe someday. Til now, all this was done by myself. Go Carol! 💃😄

    I agree with a lot of your takes. However… that big box painting behind you in every vid MUST go. It says nothing about who you are. Please find an artist you love and commission a piece. You’ll love it, care for it, and have an emotional attachment to the piece-and we will be able to see that. We should never have art in our home that is disposable. I’ll die on that hill. 😉

Bathrooms, the master especially, has many of these dated things. HUGE jetted corner tile tub, huge walled mirror, tiles of a variety of differ ugly patterns, ugly lighting, peachy poopy walls…ugh! Changing the walls to white, trim and doors are tricorn black…it’s the tile and that tub….that’s where the work is.

    The best thing I have found to clean Jacuzzi tubs with is vinegar & finish soap that you use in your dishwasher. Fill the tub up to the jets and put in vinegar and finish and turn the jets on, watch all the mold come out and run it for a while then drain the tub, and repeat!!

    I’m 77 and my 25 year old retirement log home in the woods is definitely a bit outdated. But except for the dreaded white tiles it’s not too bad. I’m pretty sure there will be no ripping out of a bathroom in my future at this point and I don’t hate it, adore my huge soaker tub,. I’m a bath person, some go ick, but I do top it off with a icy shower. 😏The one thing I’m thinking about doing is swapping out my silk flowers for greens but trying not to be too “influenced “. We had a new inventory build 5 years ago and the builder insisted on “upgrading” the master to a garden tub and separate shower with one of those awful metal framed doors that makes the sucking sound when you open it. Such. A. Nightmare. To. Clean. I never wanted it and owning it confirms that I still never want it.
    Honestly, we now live in a 1970’s ranch home with one full bath on the main level (no master suite), and even with 4 kids, it’s heavenly. I’m soooo much happier with the downgrade (there’s a second full bath in the finished basement). No more doors (shower curtain), no massive garden tub, no big wet spaces to clean. We’ve already painted the walls, and we do want to update the fixtures and mirror, so this video is super helpful. And as stunning as those glass showers look… I don’t know, the shower curtain has always been the easiest and mode functional for us 😬😬😬. Feels like heresy to say that but… so far, it’s true.

      well if you're having it done by a company then they should help you make sure what you're picking goes together at least. its' good to Pinterest or cut out magazine photos of what you like. then you can narrow down what you like and the person at the installation company can narrow down choices so you don't see everything, just things you'll like. if you can afford to hire someone they'll help but a lot of tile and flooring places or cabinet places will offer free suggestions so you don't have things that don't work together at the very least.

    Oh I would say the worst bathrooms I’ve seen are in Sedona Arizona!
    Right now I live in Iowa. Our new old house has had the 3 bathrooms remodeled. They are all pretty good. Well for 10 + years ago. I do have a jetted tub, surrounded by like a larger marbled slate tile. Looks nice. No problem keeping it clean. And the bathroom is huge, so it doesn’t take up too much space. It does have a shower & a separate toilet room with a door. It has a floor to ceiling built in which is nice. It does have the full mirror though. Lighting are just like ceiling puck lights.
    The other 2 are just showers, toilet & sinks. They have glass enclosures, honey comb tiles & scones, with hanging mirrors. They all look pretty good.

The tiles are in perfect condition and bounce light around the bathroom. As I said, they are very neutral and pristine and I'm keeping them! We are changing everything else (floor, vanity, sinks, plumbing, toilet). Oh, yes, we are also keeping the original bathtub which is in great condition. We are saving a ton of money with this approach.

    I agree about most of these tips but don't have a problem with those wall to wall mirrors. Especially in very small bathrooms they can work fine, because you get the illusion of a bigger one. But I can't even understand that wall to wall carpet was ever okay or allowed in a wet area. 😮😮😮 We have building standards in Sweden, to avoid mold and water damage. Light colored walls and bring that same color onto the ceiling so it doesn’t cut the room down. Think pale, doesn’t have to necessarily be white. Also, a very large mirror, even those typical frameless ones that are usually stock in bathrooms (but frame it out with some trim molding) and of course, like Valentina said, lighting. Overhead can brighten, but it’s not flattering, so adding wall sconces would help with a cooler bulb, not warm. ( if you have the option to do so)

    I'm so curious and to date, I have not had an answer to my question, so hoping you can help Valentina!
    Why do most new and/or renovated showers in the US still have a hob? For those who don't know what this is, it's the raised edge at the base, often the height of a single course of bricks.
    I'm in Australia, and it's very rare to see these constructed anymore. I'd say 99% of showers are built using a screed bed over a waterproof membrane, then tiled, so no need for a hob.

    • @arialle8905
      @arialle8905 Před 10 měsíci

      @janewest-qg5hd I see hobless showers in really high end properties in the US. I was in NSW (now ACT). I built a house in Sydney about 20 years ago and opted for a hobless shower. I'm now in an apartment in Canberra. The building is 15 years old and... wait for it...hobless shower.
      I think it's more than just building regulations (not sure what planning laws have to do with it?).

    • @number6396
      @number6396 Před 10 měsíci +1

      In the US that's a curbed shower. Theoretically It holds the water in the shower. Personally I have three showers and they are all curbless (after remodel). I have a wheelchair user, however, and curbless is mandatory for our needs.

    Restoration Hardware has the nicest hardware for kitchens and bathrooms. Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware’s vanities are beautiful. Basins on top of the bathroom vanities are out of style. Laminate is not a good choice for bathroom floors because they can expand if they get wet, a better choice is vinyl or luxury vinyl flooring.

    I hate grout. It's hard to clean and the grout deteriorates and then water gets behind the tile. I did manmade marble in my families house when we had to redo it. It wasn't expensive, it wasn't cheap but it was like $3k (2019) and it was 3 large pieces instead of all those tiles, the plus is that where the house is, there are earthquakes and I've seen that make tiles pop off the walls and having 3 big pieces they move a bit but don't pop off so they're wall to tub or floor (2 bathrooms) and the entire wall is protected from the water that could cause damage. It might look dated in a few years but I won't have to change it because it's failed. In the house I live in how we have a big jetted tub, I hate it, we've tried to clean it so many times and black stuff still comes out. I want to replace it with a big free standing soaking tub. I hate dealing with mold and grout, so the easier and smoother surfaces are the more I like them.
    Our guest bathroom has the Hollywood lights. Our house was built in the 90s. Eventually when we redo the bathroom we will change it but for now we're like, it's there and it works. The bathroom is clean so that's all we care about right now lol. I would love to redo both bathrooms and the kitchen and have something sleeker and modern.
    We had carpet in our bedrooms but not the bathrooms, when I was a kid we had carpet but it was removable. It had a rubber back like a bathmat so we could wash it. We did once a month. We had linoleum under it but ya wall to wall carpet, eww.
    We have the huge mirrors as well, the guest bath is plain but the master bath has a frame. My hubby loves it, I'd prefer 2 mirrors, one over each sink but he likes it. When we do redo our bathroom we will change that though.

      My daughter rented an apartment in Seattle for 6 yrs. She added peel and stick wallpaper in her bathroom, changed out the light fixture and the mirror and it was amazing. Changed the cabinet hardware throughout the place, took down the blinds and added curtains. Threw huge area rugs over outdated carpet, even painted an accent wall in the living room. Kept everything stored in a hall closet and changed it all back (even fresh white paint) when she finally bought her home. I would like to ask a question or two. Why do we not see any of your decorating at clients homes? We only see the same shot of where you are sitting now. Other decorating shows like Rebbeca Robinson show us from beginning project to end. Do you in fact have a decorator license? I am an interior decorator and we were taught to work with clients on their tastes and what they want their house to feel like, not what we want or our tastes or tell them everything they have is “out dated”. Then laugh at everything. I could say to you your house looks very cold,no color at all, cheap paintings and laugh at you, but that is so rude! Let’s see some of your work and not shopping in IKEA etc.

    Carpet and toenails? Big spa tubs with jets? Hygienically disgusting. Think about it. I laughed out loud at both of those! But, I do not agree with your criticism of the square tiles, large mirrors or lower cabs. You showed gross moldy tiles. Keep them clean and they are fine. Large mirrors are not easy to remove. It's dangerous and removal usually destroys the sheetrock. All glass products (including shower enclosures) are expensive today. Stick with your mirrors and save $. But, yes, adding a frame is a good idea. Lastly, I'm short and have a wheelchair user so we love the lower cabs.
