  • INCREDIBLE RECOVERY - Container Rolled Down Hill. Another week with another difficult container rollover! Would never be fun if it was easy and this one was a challenge for obvious reasons. Loaded, tight space and fighting the incline from the hill all had their own challenges yet Alex was up to the task and knocked it out the park.
    We got this call by Jonas from Kustom Tow, who had both his wreckers on scene. As you'll see in this video, while wreckers are amazing machinery they just can't compete with the speed and versatility of a rotator. Just being able to rotate the boom with the stability of the outriggers makes it a true work horse in the right hands.
    Together, Alex and Jonas got this back up the hill and upright so the customer can haul it away in his tractor. Originally it was said that the driver failed to do a "tug test" and that's how the container came off the tractor and rolled through the gate and down the hill. What did you guys think of this hard job turned into an easy job? And if you're a fan and would like more, become a member! I post all my deleted videos here and other perks: / @pepestowingservice

      IMO, Alex has the coolest head of Pepe's, which is why his face should be on the Pepe's promo ads. Jonas is a cool dude, but he drives a stickboom truck, which means he will have limited experience compared to a rotator operator yes. What actually bothered me the most, was the driver at the end who was hooking up to the trailer. Jonas had to keep yelling at the driver, because the driver was clueless. I don't know why we employ clueless drivers, makes 0 sense to me. This disaster is just going to end up happening again.

    • @FeliciaSteward-ds2dh
      @FeliciaSteward-ds2dh Před měsícem

      Most drivers have 2 types of mentality. Either they do a tug or they skip it all together. When in all reality just because you did a tug test does NOT mean the bar went all the across and latched to the other side of the fifth wheel plate! You should do a tug test but while you are out rolling your landing legs up you should get under and look to make sure the bar is all the way across and locked to the side! It doesn't take much to place eyes to make sure it's secure! Especially if the driver is bad winter weather because ice and salt can be in those opening parts of the Fifth Wheel...

    Great job as always. This job beautifully demonstrates how awesome rotators perform when working in tight areas. With just wreckers, this job would have been extremely hard. With 2 rotators, it's an easy pick and roll. It also seems like wreckers without sleepers are a better option for a smaller fleet. Having the truck a few feet shorter makes it way more nimble in tight areas.

I know cause my SIL is a FTO at her department!

      Same thing when a person goes through school to get their CDL. Depending on school it's 2-10 weeks and then a company hires them and they go through orientation and will be placed with a trainer for however long the company has in place. Then the STUDENT will be brought back to yard to test out and at that time they are given their semi truck to drive! Ex: when I started in 2000 I went to CDL 5 weeks and then went to a company and company placed me with a trainer for 6 weeks and then they brought me back to Corporate where safety made me do a Pre Trip, driving test on the roadway, some backing obstacles, hooking and dropping a trailer and then I was issued a truck and was a solo driver! Then the company had a policy every year EVERY DRIVER no matter how long they were driving had to do annual testing!

    @laura_774 Před měsícem +4

    I was wondering how that happened but as soon as Alex mentioned tug test made 100% sense. If you’re going to drive a tractor trailer tug test is a must for a couple of reasons. Not only doing just the tug test but also look at your fifth wheel to see if there’s any problems with the fifth will not locking properly because the last thing you want is to be going down the freeway and lose your trailer because you didn’t do your tug test or visually check your fifth wheel. 100% driver error. As far as I know when you do a tug test, you’re supposed to actually go forward hence tugging it not push back after you’ve already hooked up to it, but if I’m wrong, Josh correct me.

  • @45KevinR

    The video really shows the capabilities of a rotator let alone one as big as Flipper. You're able to get your lifting point over the load well before it gets close to you. That gives you air, but also gives you huge amounts of control between the two lines. And you can even get air during the drag phase, which must reduce damage and risk. Even though Jonas had a longer boom than a lot of the straight wreckers we see, his truck is left pulling when a rotator can lift and spin the load in 3 dimensions. The manufacturer should buy your videos for their marketing material.
    Thanks to Alex for finding out what happened. I was trying to visualise how many mistakes a properly connected truck and trailer would have need to make to end up there and bend the gate! With the real explanation it all gets much simpler, but I wonder if the load was already shifted so as to yeet the container so far to the left. I'd have expected it to be on its knees by the curb. Unless he really floored it around into the access road.

    Somebody needs to teach all these drivers, when they have connected their tractor to the trailer, in addition to tugging the connection, to take a flashlight and get under the trailer and shine the light on the 5th wheel connection and visually confirm that the jaws have completely closed around the neck of the kingpin and are locked in place. Do that every time and they'll never lose a trailer like that. If a driver can't do that, maybe truck driving isn't for them.

At the beginning of the video-there was three tow trucks-with one in the middle basically right up against the edge of the hill. My questions is-what was the purpose of that? Seems to me that it doesn’t make much sense having a tow truck sitting exactly where you’d want to place the runaway trailer.

      Seems they were trying to drag the trailer up the hill with the first truck and could only get so far. At that point they added the second truck off the end to add lift and soon realized they were outgunned and needed a rotator.

    No disrespect intended toward Jonas and his team, but I think the reason other recovery crews don't have really smart workers is - Pepe's hired the smart ones already.

      The skookum blocks we use are light. Almost 50lbs compared to a Yoke or Johnson 15t block over 100lbs
